Projeto Rio BuddhaVihara"And the Blessed One said to the Bhikkhus: 'I am delivered, O
Bhikkhus, from all fetters, human and divine. You, O Bhikkhus, are also delivered from all fetters, human and divine. Go ye
now, O Bhikkhus, and wander, for the gain of the many, for the welfare of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the
good, for the gain, and for the welfare of gods and men."

Buddhism in Brazil
• Although our country has predominantly Christian population, the interest on Buddhism has been growing as films, books, documentaries and more cientists discover the benefits of meditation.
• It is important to make the Theravada Teachings more accessible in portuguese.
• According to statistics, Buddhists are 0.13% of the 188 million Brazilian population. From these 244.000 Buddhists in Brazil, 66% are not from Asian origins and naturally found in the Teachings of Buddha a welcoming Path to Happiness (2007).
• Out of the 210 organized Buddhist groups in Brazil, only 5 were related to Theravada Buddhism Teachings and Practices (one of those, from S.N Goenka tradition, has a big centre and organizes monthly 10 day retreats for 25/30 people).

Why Rio Buddhavihara Project?
• As Theravada Buddhism is not yet fully established anywhere throughout the entire continent of South America.
• Rio Buddhavihara is, at present, sole long term project assuring the presence of the Theravada School of Buddhism and its Teachings in Brazil and South America as a whole: a major initiative to secure a firm and lasting spiritual home for the Theravada Sangha.
• By supporting a community of resident monks we can stimulate the transmission of the Lord Buddha’s Teachings as taught by this tradition for lay people and for future brazilian monks that may be ordained and trainned.
• Wish to intensify social work in poor communities nearby 1. Education and Ethics – (english class, Sunday school)2. Emotional Balance (for community and visiting schools)3. Peace Culture and Conflict Resolution 4. Buddhist Culture (books, films and discussion, art and spiritual
music, photography workshop for comunnity)
