The LetterFor immediate release ::::::::ATTENTION Investigators!Due to decreased funding this year, GLOBAL EMERGENCY TRAVELUNIT (G.E.T.U.) can no longer launch small Search and Rescue missions.We are asking you to assist us in locating some families who have beenreported missing and may be stranded. We have recovered several bottlesthat have washed ashore in various locations around the world.We are sending the bottles to you. Attached to the neck of each bottleis an ID tag telling you where the bottle washed ashore and where thefamilies were last seen before they became stranded. Inside the bottle isa note. Unfortunately, it appears that the bottles have leaked. Some partsof the notes are unreadable. But do not worry. We have sent the originalnote to a local Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) unit. They should be ableto decipher the missing information. Every day, the CSI unit will reportwhat they have salvaged. This information may help your team determinewhere a stranded family is waiting.Use the CSI clues and any information you gain through research to tracethe journey the bottle must have made. In 14 days, your team must presentclear and precise evidence as to the whereabouts of the stranded families.G.E.T.U. will then decide if your facts are valid and whether or not tosend out a search and rescue ship.DO NOT TAKE THE NOTE FROM YOUR BOTTLE until tomorrow.Your first job as an investigating team is to locate where your bottle wasfound. Use your Ocean Currents Map on pages 4–5 and the latitude/longitude coordinates found on the bottle ID tag.Remember, you all must work together and help each other to successfullydetermine where to send the rescue ships! Submit your findings within 14days. Good Luck!

Your Investigation TeamYou will be assigned to a group of 3-5 students.Each person in your team will have a specific role and responsibilities.

The SupervisorYou will organize your team and direct individuals as needed. You need to keep your team motivated and ON TASK. You are responsible for collecting and returning the TEAM FOLDER each day.

If your team is short a role or someone is absent YOU must take over that role and/or responsibilities.

The ReaderYou will read aloud all handouts and clues to your group.

The RecorderYou will maintain the DAILY DISCOVERY LOGS, check that your teammates complete all research, and organize your TEAM FOLDER.

The ManagerYou will collect and return all supplies and materials (except the team folder) as needed for experiments and daily work.

You will be the only person out of your seat (except for the supervisor).

The TechnicianYou will assist all team members in their tasks. If anyone in your group needs help they will turn to you.

You will also be time keeper. It is your job to monitor the time, make sure your group is keeping up and on task to finish.

Your Investigation TeamAnd your team will be…

Once all teams have been announced go sit with your team.

Your BottleManagers: Come up to the bucket and choose a bottle and take your team folder.

Do NOT take the letter out of the bottle yet.

Reader: read the tag on the bottleRecorder: With the help of your team fill in the information on the front of your team folder.Then mark the location of your bottle on the map inside your folder.

Ultimate GoalRemember your ultimate goal is to successfully locate the missing families so that rescue ships can be sent to them!

To find your family this mission will be broken up into 3 parts…

Phase 1Your team will learn about ocean currents so you can determine where the bottle traveled.

This phase will include video clips, note taking, and experiments.

Phase 2A local CSI unit will analyze the bottle’s contents, decipher the note, and send you daily reports (clues).

You will use the CSI reports and conduct research (online and in books) to figure out where the stranded family is located.

Phase 3Your team will organize and PRESENT your evidence and explain to the GETU where to send their ships to rescue the family.

This will be a group presentation, everyone will be expected to speak, and you must have a visual poster or PPT.

Finally there will be an exam (your final).
