The 2011-12 club year is drawing to an end and I would like to sincerely thank all the executive committee and sub- committee members and volunteers for their efforts in making it a very successful year. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our major sponsors, City of Joondalup, Sports Surfaces and Tennis Only and also a host of minor sponsors for their contributions to the club. My well wishes also go to Jenny Scott and her mother who has been very ill recently. Jenny will be spending some time with her mother while she recuperates so Mitchell Turner will be organising social on Saturdays for a while. It has been a very busy year and I would like to thank club members for their understanding and patience in putting up with the inconveniences caused by the kitchen upgrade, fence repairs, court resurfacing and light pole replacements. The replacement of 8 faulty light pole footings is being funded by the City of Joondalup and all paving and court repairs should be completed in the next few weeks. 2012-13 AGM The Sorrento Tennis Club AGM will be held at the clubhouse at 5.30 pm on Saturday 21 July 2012 following social tennis. A word from the PresidentGreetings to all and a very warm welcome to our new club members! The 2011-12 club year is drawing to an end and I would like to sincerely thank all the executive committee and sub-committee members and volunteers for their efforts in making it a very successful year. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our major sponsors, City of

Joondalup, Sports Surfaces and Tennis Only and also a host of minor sponsors for their contributions to the club.

2012-13 AGMThe Sorrento Tennis Club AGM will be held at the clubhouse at 5.30 pm on Saturday 21 July 2012 following social tennis. I strongly urge all our adult members to attend and have their say in club matters and to vote in a new executive committee and sub-committees. I strongly urge all members to consider nominating for positions on the various committees to help share the load and improve the running of the club. As an incentive to members to join the executive committee, those elected will have their social playing fees waived during their term in office. A nomination form for committee positions is attached.

New Fee StructureMembership fees for the 2012-13 club year will be due from 1st

July 2012 and the renewal request and new fee structure will be emailed out before the end of June 2012. The executive committee has opted to increase the club fees by 2% in line with the yearly CPI increase. In addition the committee has also approved the introduction of a 10% membership discount for students over 18 and a new $150 up front fee per player to cover the cost of practicing under lights on weeknights. Members should also note that their early renewal of yearly membership fees will put them in a draw to win a $200 cash prize.

2012 Club Championships and Pennant ResultsCongratulations to all the winners and participants of the 2012 Annual Club Championship Events. A list of winners is attached to this newsletter. The Club Championships went very well with 130 entries and concluded with a very enjoyable presentation event that included a chicken and salad dinner. Many thanks to all those who assisted and in particular to Jenny Scott and the kitchen staff who fed the starving players.

Congratulations to the Ladies Saturday Div. 6 team who won their pennant final and to the following players who won Most Valuable Player Awards: Richard Sampson (Men’s State League MVP Winner), Mitchell Pleydell (Men’s State League MVP R/U), Natasha Adamson (Ladies’ Div. 6 MVP winner) and Braden Penny (Boys’ 14 Div 1 MVP Winner).

2012 Junior Saturday Social CompetitionCongratulations to the regular participants who did well in the Saturday Social Competition. This Competition will continue and can also include some doubles play for those interested.

2012 City of Joondalup Junior Hardcourt TournamentSorrento Tennis Club has received a generous $5,000 sponsorship from the City of Joondalup to run the above mentioned state

tournament from 7-11 July 2012 at our club. This tournament is on during the school holidays but it may impact on junior and senior social play on Saturday 7th July. This tournament will attract the top state juniors and will give our own developing junior players the opportunity to participate. Any help from members would be much appreciated in the kitchen and the club grounds. Please mention it to John Genovese or Jenny Scott if you can help.

Another Junior Tournament (Medibank Regional Centre Junior Series) will also be held on one weekend of 15/16 September and this may also disrupt social play. Members will be notified about this tournament in due course.

2012 Club DinnerThe annual club dinner will be held at the Fratelli’s Restaurant at Sorrento, opposite the life savers club, at 7.00 pm Saturday 30 June 2012. Some awards will be made at this function and it

promises to be a great night. Tickets are $60 and anyone interested should contact Anna Davis in the club office or Jenny Scott.

2012 Quiz NightThe STC Quiz Night will be held at 7.30 pm Friday 27th July at the club rooms. The quiz master will be Joel Moss, who did a really great job last year, so it should be great fun and there will be lots of good prizes. Places are limited so please get your tickets well in advance of the date to ensure you get a table.

As a final point members are asked to take good care of the court squeegees by hanging them up after use. If these are left on the ground, the rubbers curl up and make them unserviceable. The individual rubbers cost $50 each to replace so are a significant expense to the club. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Many thanks to all and best wishes for the next club year

Ladies Captain

Just prior to Easter the ladies played for a cache of Easter Eggs. A competitive morning of tennis was a great success. Thanks to the ladies who recently made donations for cancer research. Tuesday tennis concluded with a morning tea arranged by Jenny Scott and was enjoyed by all. Pennants are under way again with teams achieving some success.

Juniors Coordinator’s ReportBraden Penny, Quinn Krauskopf and Alex Bechard made the 550km trip down to the 2012 WA State Hardcourt Tournament in Kalgoorlie over the June 1-4 long weekend. Braden Penny made the quarter finals, losing to the eventual winner in the singles draw, then paired up with Quinn to make the doubles semis before being knocked out by the number one seeds. Quinn and Alex had to fight through qualifications to make the main draw before losing tough matches in the first round, great work guys!

Coach’s Corner

Well it may be winter now, but there is still plenty of tennis being played here at Sorrento and on the other side of the world. With the French Open just being over and Wimbledon approaching it’s always good to see the best in action and fire us up to get on the court.

This term we have started a “competition Friday” for all the different age groups involved with coaching classes. Although we could do with bigger numbers, so far it has been a good success, with many playing their first competition. We have a really

competitive group of 10 & under players who show good promise & are really keen.

Coaching

Term 2 has been travelling smoothly so far, other than the odd interruption from rain! Thanks to the great efforts from the kids in the squads as well as the coaches. Last term we had 2 new coaches start here- Scott Culpin and David Buckoski, who are both doing a great job. Scott is currently doing the level 1 coaching course, while Carlo Piva has just signed up to do the Club Professional course (level 2). All the coaching staff work well together as team and are doing a great job so thanks again to you all.

Junior Pennants

Currently up to round 7 this week, current ladder positions are as follows:

Boys 14d2 3rd Boys 16d3 4th

Boys 14d6 4th Boys16d5 2nd

Boys 14d7 2nd Girls 14d2 1st

Boys 16d1 5th Girls 12d2 5th

Boys 16d2 5th

Club shirts are in now so if you haven’t got one yet then please come in and grab one ($30).

Awards Presentation

Well done to the winners of MVP awards for the summer season, especially to Braden Penny & Marguerite Tambakis who took out the overall best boy & girl trophies. Rhys Jones took home a bag of awards, mostly for his efforts in the Saturday morning ladder competition.

Sorrento Jr Hardcourt Tournament

We encourage all players from squads and pennants to take part in the up coming school holiday tournament here at Sorrento, from 7-11 July. Entries online and close 5pm, 23 June. Go to http://tournaments.tennis.com.au

There are other tournaments coming up in the holidays also- the Greenwood event starting July 12, and also the WA State Open Age from July 17-21. Go to http://www.tennis.com.au/wa/tournaments/upcoming-tournaments to check out more details.

Practicing

For the juniors out there, I just want to make a point of saying that it would be great to see more of you arranging hits and coming down to the club to practice outside of squad/ lessons. Volume on court is so key to constantly improve and sharpen up your game. To balance out your program and get the best results possible make sure you have a combination of coaching, your own practice & match play.

There are plenty of juniors that could be a lot better just spending an extra 2hrs on court/ week as a starting point. Give it a try!

Wimbledon Day

I’m proposing Tues June 26 for the event, 9.30-11.30am. Will speak with Irene and confirm at the next Tues social morning. Always a fun morning, and a bit of a change up from the usual set play. There will be a list to put your name down in the social room. If you are interested then please put your name down by June 25.

Thanks and see you at the club!

Tennis TipsQuestion- Where should the server stand while serving in doubles so that it is not a foot fault?Answer- Behind the base line anywhere between the centre point and the imaginary line extending beyond the sideline (on the side of the court opposite to the service court that s/he is serving to). If s/he passes beyond those points or touches the line before hitting the ball, it is a foot fault.
