BELIEVE IT OR NOT … Soroptimist International WANTS to know about EVERYTHING we do. Yes, EVERYTHING! How they find out is through the Programme Focus Report. When a Committee has completed anything, any project, within the four PILLARS (Membership, Public Awareness, Program, Fund Raising), we need to complete a Pro-gramme Focus Report (online) to let SI know what we did. BELIEVE IT OR NOT … Someone at Soroptimist Internationally actually READS every single one of these Programme Focus Reports. BELIEVE IT OR NOT … Some of the information from these reports have made their way into reports at the United Nations. YUP—this is TRUE! I kid you not! THE CATCH? The catch is we have to fill out these reports throughout the year. If they don’t get completed, no one knows about what we did. You might not think what you did was major—but it’s important, no matter how small. Let’s not judge our actions …

let’s just report them. Member and Former President Chris Otto has agreed to be the

Programme Focus Report ADVISOR. She will be contacting (possibly hounding) coordi-nators to complete these reports upon the completion of every and any project. These reports can be done in draft form, saved for review before finalizing. Chris is also available to assist you if you need help. And once you complete the report, please let her know. That will make her so happy!

I want to take this space, in this newsletter, to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for your participation in and support of our club this past year. You are all

truly amazing!

This year went by at warp speed and now it is time to pass the gavel to incoming President, Francine Tone . I am very proud to have Fran as our next President. She has supported me this past year in many ways and most of it behind the scenes. She loves our club and is a consummate

Soroptimist.

We had a super busy year with new events, special events and amped up existing events: Butterfly Effect, Region 5 Fall District Meeting, Soroptishop, Celebrating the Best for Women Awards…all of this in addition to the other events and fundraisers. YOU

are all amazing.

To our SITD Board, deep bows! None of this would happen without you. I’m humbled by

your servant leadership and support. Thank you.

A special thank you to Susan Horst for adding your classy touches to all of our social events! One question…where do you store everything? Also, thank you for your growth this year as a Sorpotimist through attending the SIA Annual Confer-ence in Vancouver and while on your va-cation, taking time to visit SIA headquar-ters in Philadelphia. Your interest and your heart for this organization has been

noticed and is appreciated by all.

In appreciation,

President Linnis

Ever wonder what happens at Convention? The Soroptimist International Convention is scheduled for July 9-12, 2015 in Istanbul, Turkey. Below are some excerpts from the Agenda for a little peek into what will transpire. Opening Ceremonies will be held on 9 July 2015. From 10 July 2015 through 12 July 2015, a variety of workshops are offered, which include: Educate to Lead: Far we’ve come, far we need to go Since the first Soroptimist International Convention in 1930, Soroptimists have gone through many national and international upheavals and yet their determination remained unshaken and their projects continued. What has all the chaos of the 20th century taught us about resil-ience? How should we further develop the Educate to Lead concept to inspire momentum and engage new generations? The power of a second chance Women who have not been able to complete their education due to economic constraints, violence in the family, forced migration, and many other reasons, can reclaim their independence through different types of continuing education programs. Is it ever too late to go to school? Women and Islam This session aims to correct the misconceptions and misperceptions often held of women in Muslim societies. It will discuss their values, their cultural diversity, their identities. It will recognise the many different roles and types of influence women have in their communities. Making your voice heard at the local, national and international levels! This workshop aims to provide participants with concrete tools and tips for becoming effective advocates for women’s rights at the local, national and international levels. Is there any connection between lobbying a local/national government and an international institution? The United Nations and us: From vision to action What place do women’s issues have at the United Nations today compared to 20 years ago? What are the main current and emerging issues relat-ed to women at the UN? Is NGO participation in UN processes really meaningful? How can Soroptimists influence the global agenda? Women’s status in business, education and health in Turkey There are many highly successful professional women in Turkey. They contribute to their society and their economy actively and in many different ways. Women leaders from Istanbul will share their experiences and their perspectives. Defeating Violence! Violence against women is shaped by social, political, economic, and legal factors in complex ways but it is always rooted in the unequal power relations between men and women. The phenomenon remains widespread but it still poorly understood. Soroptimist International of Europe, together with SIGBI and with the support of the United Nations, is launching a project entitled Defeating Violence! What’s the project all about and how can you contribute? Slavery in the 21st century: The realities of human trafficking Trafficking in human beings is a critical problem and a form of modern-day slavery. What are the realities victims face? What can Soroptimists from source, transit and destination countries do to help prevent trafficking? Poverty and prosperity: Do women have the right rights? Changes in national and international laws and policies can have a huge impact on the lives of women and girls. What can Soroptimists do locally, nationally and internationally to help close the gaps in women’s rights?

Innovative strategies for empowering women In recent years, sets of binding human rights, labour, and anti-corruption standards for businesses have been developed by international institutions and governments. Many companies are also involved in voluntary corpo-rate social responsibility initiatives. Does businesses really believe in CSR and women’s empowerment?

Presidential Macaroons The Committee Workshop held in the evening May 21, 2015 was hugely successful for so many reasons. We saw members that we don’t usually see at noon meetings — hint there? For those of you who could not join, the agenda was: 1. Call to Order 2. Get a glass of wine 3. Get some food 4. Now let’s socialize … and while you’re doing that, please

stop by the table and sign up for openings on committees and for the 2015-2016 Thought for the Day and White Elephant.

The room was “a-buzz” with chit-chat, catching up, sharing sto-ries, and even talk about committees from soon-to-become advi-sors. We have to do this again! Despite a ton of socializing and fun, the Committee List did get filled out—soon to be sent out to the membership for the upcoming year. THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR RAISING YOUR HAND TO VOLUNTEER!!! One item that came out of this evening was the question: should we hold some business meetings in the evening? After a quick email to the entire club and a 65% response, the unanimous vote was “yes”! So watch your emails for the 2015-2016 calendar—some business meetings are scheduled for 5:30 PM. Expect to see new faces at meetings!!
