For Joan Enric Lluna Sorolla Seria for Clarinet and conductorless Chamber Orchestra after the murals of Joaquín Sorolla Composer: Geoffrey Gordon "I could not paint at all if I had to paint slowly. Every effect is so transient, it must be rapidly painted.” Joaquín Sorolla “Nature, the sun itself, produces color effects... instantaneously. The impression of these evanescent visions is what we make desperate attempts to catch and fix by any means at hand. At such moments I am unconscious of materials, of style, of rules, of everything that intervenes between my perception and the object or idea perceived.” Joaquín Sorolla A vibrant and intense musical celebration of the colour, sunlight, life and drama depicted by the magnificent and vast mural visions of renowned Spanish artist, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (18631923), which are housed at the Sorolla room at the Hispanic Society of America, New York. In 5 contrasting movements, which draw title and inspiration from 5 of the 14 Sorolla murals (below), the concerto treats and captures through the composer’s characteristically intense compositional style, the dramatic and visual aspect of each painting through exciting interplay between the solo clarinet and chamber ensemble which the soloist leads, telling in an manner which is quasioperatic the story of the scenes of Spanish life which Sorolla depicted, the story of the face which on many of the murals looks you right in the eye, the soloist line dexterously switching instruments making the concerto unique in expression, voice and response to its inspiration: the dazzling, vibrating sunlight on the sea, bullfighters saluting the president of the corrida with proud honour, the jota aragonesa painted the year WWI commenced, the dark costumes of Holy Week penitents, and the exuberance of a Sevilla dance.
