What is Bin-Picking?”Bin-picking simply means that a box or bin has to be automatcally unloaded.”

DIRA Finansieringskonference

2004: Company founded by professor Ivar Balslev & Ph.D. René Dencker to solve the challenge of Bin-picking.

10 Years Search for the Holy Grail

• For more than two decades, machine vision practitioners have been predicting the commercial emergence of robotic random bin-picking.

• But widespread random bin-picking applications never materialized, and to this day remain a challenge.

• “It’s been a desired, but very elusive and unreachable goal for a long time.”

• “A lot of people have referred to bin-picking as the Holy Grail of robotic material handling.”

Uddrag fra projektbeskrivelsen, HTF 2009

Her udvikles verdens første Bin-Picker robotcelle som hyldevare:

• Bin-Picker robotter kan anvendes til automatisering af nedslidende og omkostningstunge manuelle håndteringsprocesser.

• I den europæiske fremstillingsindustri er 85 % af disse processer ikke automatiseret.

• Som hyldevare skal Bin-Pickeren være konkurrencedygtig, let at anskaffe og igangsætte.

• En foreløbig markedsevaluering fokuseret på cylindriske emner vurderer et salgspotentiale på mere end 2.000 maskiner i Europa.

Step 1, 2009-12: SCAPE Standardized Offerings

1. SCAPE Bin-Picking Software Suite– A complete sw suite for industrial robots that enables

programming-free 3D bin-picking applications– Including Orientation Control and a number of vision and

sw options for optimizing recognition, gripping and cycle time

2. SCAPE Tool Units– Special designed units incl. grippers, integrated

vision sensor system and linear guides

3. SCAPE Part Training Studio– Offline teaching of parts

4. SCAPE Services– Support, training, implementation and expert assistance

Step 2, 2014-16: SCAPE Mini-Picker

• Next Generation of the UR Bin-Picker:

• Determines the exact part position in the gripper.

• Optimises paths dynamically given the actual grasp and delivery, and moves the part quickly to a fixture or CNC-, weld- or assembly machine/station.

• Standard €40.000 product to manufacturing companies for handling parts of size 2-15cm (<½kg) with cycle time less than 7 sec.

• Production workers will be able to move the robot, use it safely without fences and configure/train it for new parts in 1-2 hours.

Step 3, 2014-16: Further standardization

• 4-5 specialized and standardized Variants of the SCAPE Bin-Picker for Automotive, such as

• Special Parts e.g. brake discs• Different Robot brands• Optimized Cycle Time• Heavy/Large Parts• Difficult Placement Tasks• Optimized for limited space• Co-worker robots• Optimized for more parts• Combined w/ welding/CNC
