    Te ancient pastoralists o the pre and protohistoric Sahara let us innume-rable images o themselves and their herds. Paintings and engravings showthese herders moving with their cattle or carrying out everyday activitiesin their camp. In particular, one sees them looking ater their animals,CVUPOFRVFTUJPOSFNBJOTEJEUIFZESJOLUIFNJMLPGUIFJSDPXTFSFJTno immediate response because, in todays world, the distribution o pas-toralists does not coincide with that o milk-drinkers (Map 1), and thereare even pastoralists or whom the very idea o such a drink is perectlySFQVHOBOU*ODVMUVSFTXIJDIIBWFTVDIBjOPONJMLJOHBUUJUVEFxNJMLJTsometimes even seen as a kind o disgusting animal secretion, and there isOPRVFTUJPOPGESJOLJOHJU4JNPPOT#FSOPU

It has even been claimed that cer-tain images in the Libyan desert could representblocks o butter or cheeses laid out on trays (Es-QSBOEJFVCVUOPOFPGUIFTFDMBJNTcan prove beyond doubt the consumption omilk or dairy products.Another kind o argument looks at the volumeo cows udders. Yolande schudi used this cri-

    that, everywhere in the Sahara, the udders weregenerally rarely represented. Moreover, a hugenumber o ethnographic examples prove thatmany varieties o cows raised today by Aricanpastoralists have udders that may be almost in-visible, and yet this in no way prevents milk-ing (as, or example, among the Dinka and theNuer). Tis must have been a ortiorithe caseor the primitive bovine races raised by prehis-toric people.In Saharan rock images, the use o milk is onlyperceptible with certainty in a ew rare scenesthat clearly illustrate milking, or that show peopledrinking directly rom udders. Te list is not longand, in act, a ew o the documents relied uponby early authors are scarcely convincing (see in-ra). However, one needs to add another kind oimage to the list, those alluding to the act that,

    HE SAHARAN ICONOGRAPHICDOSSIER

    First o all, Leo Frobenius published the wa-ter-colour copy, made by the dratswomanAgnes Schulz, o a red-ochre painting at Ido(assili-n-Ajjer, Algeria) in which one can seethree people next to a bovine, and especiallythree vessels, one o which is placed beneathUIFBOJNBMTTUPNBDI'SPCFOJVTQM/P"MUIPVHIUIJTQBJOUJOHJTTPNFUJNFTFWPLFEJOTUVEJFTPGNJMLJOHUFDIOJRVFTJOUIF4BIBSB4JNPPOTUIFTVQQPTFEDPXin it does not have the slightest indication oudders, and none o the humans is shown in aposition that might suggest milking.

    Another possible scene o milking a cow wasQVCMJTIFE JOCZ'BCSJ[JP.PSJXIPIBEspotted it in the let part o a pastoral depic-tion at the site o eshwint in the massi othe adrart Akukas in southwest Libya (MoriHFQVCMJTIFEEPDVNFOUdoes indeed seem to show a human seatedamid a herd, and perhaps holding a large vesselbetween the knees. Gaetano Forni regretted thatthe udders were not clear, and that is indeed the

    least one can say. Moreover, the available tra-cings show that the supposed milker is actuallystanding close to a hornless animal, which looksmore like a cal than a cow. Since these are tra-cings, one should also be very wary o the in-terpretations, but the current state o the panelis such that photographs do not enable one todo any checking, even by using high-poweredDPNQVUFSUFDIOJRVFTMJLF%4USFUDIPO*NBHF+A new tracing, made recently by the team othe Italo-Libyan mission, is highly revelatory in

    this respect, as it bears even less resemblance toa milking scene than that o Mori (Lernia &;BNQFUUJH4PUIJTEP-cument should be treated with great caution,and cannot be considered with any certainty asa proo o milking, as was done by Frederick4JNPPOT4JNPPOT4JNPPOT22), although this is still the position o Savinodi Lernia and Daniela Zampetti, who describethis painting as a scena di mungitura (Lernia;BNQFUUJ

Tereore itis hard to retain this scene as a depiction o mil-king, and Frederick Simoons was already highlyDSJUJDBMPGJUXSJUJOHUIBUJUTIPXFEiBIVNBOHVSF DSPVDIFE CFIJOE B DPX IJT IBOET BSFextended toward where the cows udder, which

    is not depicted, would be. Nor is a pot visiblebeneath the animal, though nearby there is anenclosure or hut in which are pots o variousshapes, together with a reclining man and child.Although this may indeed be a milking scene,BT-IPUFDMBJNTUIFIVNBOHVSFNBZJOTUFBEbe assisting at the birth o a cal (the cow lookspregnant). Or he may be blowing up the uterus,which then, as in present-day Arica, may havebeen done to encourage a cow to give milk. Iso, the scene depicts a preliminary to milking,

    A search o the literature shows that only onereally convincing document rom North Aricawas published in the early days. Located in Djororba, a region o southern Oran which todayis desert, it was the result o excavations carriedPVUIVSSJFEMZEVSJOHUIFXJOUFSPGJOa pre-Islamic necropolis, by Captain Villalonga,but unortunately no precise description wasHJWFOPGJUDPOUFYU-JIPSFBVBOE-IPUF22). It is a triangular limestone block bearing

    (Figs 10 & 11), and the other is attaching tothe ork o one o the trunks a vessel which oneDBOJNBHJOFJTGVMMPGNJML'JHFNJMLJOHscene, meticulously engraved in the style asso-ciated with the Messak culture (Le QuellecIBTBMFTTDBSFGVMMZNBEFDPVOUFSQBSUPOa nearby wall at the same site (Fig. 12), perhapsBQSFMJNJOBSZTLFUDI'JHJTFOHSBWJOHhas been subjected to an unortunate attempt atcasting, which has damaged much o it. Never-theless, one can clearly recognize the same typeo cow as in the previous scene, with swollen ud-ders, and the eye drawn with the double line thatis characteristic o the local artists handiwork,but the milker can only be recognized throughDPNQBSJTPOXJUIUIFPUIFSHVSF*OUIFCBD-kground one can see the same orked poles usedor attaching vessels that are ully comparableto the others. Also in the Messak, but arthernorth, in Wadi Eghahar, a third engraving takesup the same theme o the human milking a cow

    Te only other engraving that is even vaguelycomparable to the previous ones is also in Libya,at Ilalen in the region o the Aramat, and itsexistence was reported to me by Yves Gauthier,who was kind enough to send me a photograph.Although its ront part is somewhat hard toread, it clearly represents a cow with voluminous

    udders whose our teats are well indicated, andunder which an anthropomorph is sitting. Inront o the animal, a ew lines may indicatethe presence o a cal, and the whole thing isvery strongly evocative o a milking scene or itsQSFMJNJOBSZQIBTF'JH

    In the Immidir (massi o the Ahaggar, in Alge-ria), an assemblage at I-n-Sebuk shows peopleresting in enclosures around which a herd isHSPVQFE 'JH "MUIPVHI UIJTQBJOUJOHQSPCBCMZGSPNBMBUFQBTUPSBMJTUQFSJPEJTOPU

    very naturalistic, several elements relevant toour subject attract ones attention. o the letPGUIFFODMPTVSFTWFDPXTXJUIVEEFSTEFQJD-ted are in a vertical line, the traditional way oshowing that they are attached. Te three lower-most have their calves acing them, and beneathat last our o them there is a small human whois either reaching or their udders or handlingthe teats (Fig. 18). Under the enclosures, threeother cows acing let are in contact with smallhumans who are likewise in contact with theirVEEFST'JH*OUIJTHSPVQUIFHVSFMP-cated at lower right particularly attracts onesattention. Not only is the seated person han-dling a teat in each hand, but one observes thatanother anthropomorph, this time standing up,JTCFIJOEUIFBOJNBMJOBOJOUSJHVJOHQPTJUJPOone o its hands reaches towards the udder whi-le the other seems to be moving the tail aside,just under the base o which the mans head isclearly coming into contact with the cow.     curious posture can be understood through exa-mination o another image, located beneath the

    preceding ones. Here one can again see a cowwith udders, the our teats o which are welldrawn. It is acing its cal, and surrounded bypeople, one o whom repeats the gesture o theQSFWJPVTPOFCVUXJUIBWBSJBUJPOBMUIPVHIIFtoo is directing his hand towards the animalsudder, he is using the other not to hold the tailaside but to raise it very high, which allows himto place his ace just at the location o the ani-mals vulva (Fig. 20).0OFDBOSFDPHOJ[FJOUIJTBUFDIOJRVFUIBUJTXFMM

    known to ethnologists, and which consists oblowing into cows vaginas, either directly romthe mouth or by means o a tube, in order toprovoke the milking refex.
