Being from a family of doctors , choosing medicine as a speciality for me was a

natural choice. Early on during MBBS at the Madras Medical College , one of the

premier institutions in India I realized that I enjoyed both Medicine and Surgery.

Otolaryngology appeared to be a eld which would satisfy my desire to dabble in

both. !ence I decided to pursue it as my specialization. !owe"er , it is only after

starting my residency in otolaryngology at the B.#.$ %air &haritable !ospital that my

s'ills were honed. (nder the guidance of Prof. Dr Bachi.T.Hathiram and Dr.

Vicky S. Khattar I learned to handle busy O)*s catering to more than + patients

per day, -ards with more than patients at a time , and was pri"iledged to attend

O/ where I saw and participated in procedures from nearly e"ery otolaryngology

    sub0discipline.

!owe"er it is during this tenure that I was also introduced to the real problems

facing the poorer section of the Indian populace. )atients would tra"el 1 hrs to "isit

the O)*, wait 2 hours more in the 3ueue for a 2 minute consultation with us. /hey

would wait patiently for months till their scheduled date of surgery , and yet would

call us angels to be helping them. /his made me thin' often , do I deser"e so much

lo"e , so much trust4 5nd thus I promised myself I will do all I can to pro"e myselfworthy of it. 5 rich man6s trust must be bought , but does that ma'e the freely gi"en

trust of a poor man any less important4

I ha"e tried throughout my tenure to remember the lessons I ha"e learned from my

teacher and mentor, to treat patients with compassion and respect , and to always

remember that e"ery man has an e3ual right to the best health0care we can

    pro"ide.

I participated in multiple surgical and speciality otolaryngologic outreach camps

with the encouragement of my teachers and noticed that in no other eld is the

lacuna of up to date and modern surgical treatment greater than in my own eld.Sub0speciality trained otolaryngologists are few and far between in India, and the

dearth is massi"e especially outside the major metropolitan cities, primarily

because there e7ists not e"en one accredited fellowship programme for any

otolaryngologic sub speciality in this country.

/he poor patients resort to otologic surgeries with hammer and gouge , and

obsolete procedures li'e the &aldwell $uc procedure e"en now due to the lac' of

alternati"es. #es, as a doctor it is my dream to bring sub0speciality training and at0

par standard of care to India at an a8ordable rate for the common man.

It is with this goal in mind that I wrote the (SM$E e7amination and secured 2 instep 9 and 2+: in step 2 c'. My dream is to ac3uire e7pertise in otolaryngologic sub0

specialities at par with that of otolaryngologists in the (S5. I am also "ery

interested in research and rele"ant academics as I nd it whets my appetite for

    'nowledge.

I bring with me a fresh perspecti"e to healthcare , where we wor' in resource

strapped conditions and stri"e to pro"ide the best health0care possible with what we

ha"e. I belie"e there is much I can learn from my colleagues and my seniors in this

country , and hopefully share my lo"e for academics, otolaryngology and the joy of

patient care . I rmly belie"e that this interaction has the potential to enrich both

me and the institute I shall wor' with , for , by broadening our horizons ; with

mutual co0operation , we will be able to pursue our shared goal of allie"iating

su8ering and disease beyond our limitations.
