Supporting the creation of an environment that fosters a “scientific mindset” among children. Sony Founder Masaru Ibuka and Support for Education Masaru Ibuka believed that science education was vital for Japan’s post-war recovery. He established Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, the predecessor of Sony) in 1946. The business had finally gotten on track in 1959. In that same year, Masaru Ibuka launched activities to support schools providing advanced science education. In order to keep developing this support for education, he established the Sony Foundation for Education (the predecessor of the Sony Education Foundation). His interest in education subsequently grew to include early childhood education, and he made numerous proposals to communicate the importance of that type of education. His message related to raising children, which remains unchanged today, can be found in the pamphlet “Message from Dr. Masaru Ibuka on Nurturing” published on our website. 4-2-1, Kitashinagawa, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, 140-0001 Japan TEL +81-3-3442-1005 FAX +81-3-3442-1035 URL : http://www.sony-ef.or.jp/ Sony Education Foundation History of the Foundation Start of the Sony Fund for the Promotion of Science Education 1959 Organization of the League of Schools Receiving Sony Funding 1963 Establishment of the Early Development Association 1969 Establishment of the Sony Foundation for Education 1972 Launch of the Sony Science Teachers Association (SSTA) by reorganization of the League of Schools Receiving Sony Funding Start of the Sony Preschool Education Program 2002 Launch of the Sony Education Foundation through integration of the Sony Foundation for Education and the Early Development Association 2001 Change of status to a non-profit organization 2011 Members of the Board Representative Director, Masao Morita Chairman of the Board Representative Director, Shoji Nemoto President Managing Director Isao Matsuhisa Directors Masako Atsumi Attorney Shiro Kambe Executive Vice President, Sony Corporation Reiko Kuroda Designated Professor, Chubu University Hideaki Koizumi Corporate Officer, Hitachi, Ltd. & Hitachi Fellow Kaori Sasaki Founder & CEO, ewoman, Inc Hideki Shirakawa Emeritus Professor, University of Tsukuba Kazuaki Takanose President, Sony Institute of Higher Education Shohoku College Kiyoshi Nishitani Ex-President, Sony Education Foundation Ken Hayami Managing Director, The Japan Committee For UNICEF Yasushi Mitarai Managing Director, Kyoritsu Women's Educational Institution Midori Miyazaki Dean, Facility of Global Studies, Chiba University of Commerce Tsugie Miyashita Director, Sony Institute of Higher Education Shohoku College Miyoko O. Supporting the activities of

passionate educators and children,

who are the future

Supporting schools and preschools since 1959

Holding practical seminars and workshops

Seminars and presentations are held to broadly spread information on outstanding work and research to people in the field of education. These have become venues for educators and childcare workers from throughout Japan to gather, study together, and hone their skills.

Sony Educational Support PaperThe Foundation invites the submission of papers on science education practices at elementary and junior high schools and efforts to foster a scientific mindset at kindergartens and nurseries, and provides educational subsidies and Sony products.

Support for teachers working toimprove the quality of education

For ES and JHS teachersVarious activities including holding teacher training to deepen understanding of science, supporting programming education and international exchanges are undertaken. Support is also provided for Sony Science Teachers Association, an independent research organization composed of educators from throughout Japan.

For childcare workersThe Foundation provides support for several types of events including training seminars to raise the quality of childcare. The outstanding childcare activities undertaken in preschools throughout Japan are compiled into a pamphlet, posted on the Foundation’s website, and made available to the public for free.

Sony Monozukuri WorkshopSupport is also provided for holding the Sony Monozukuri (Craftsmanship) Workshops for elementary and junior high school students, at which Sony Group engineers serve as teachers in order to strengthen interest in science.

Finding the “scientific mindset” (photo contest)

The contest is for photos taken by parents (or guardians) that capture the inquisitive mind and wonder of children (ages 0‒6). We hope that this captures the growth of children and fosters bonds among family.

The Spring of Science ̶ Children’ s Science Camp

A week-long summer camp that Dr. Hideki Shirakawa (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry) serves as the leader of and at which elementary and junior high school students undertake independent study on the topic of “learning from nature.”

See the Sony Education Foundation’s website for detailed information on its activities.
