2-3. Circuit Descriptions

Video Amplification Circuit (VF-81 Board)The VF-81 board is divided into the video amplificationcircuit, the bright control circuit, the vertical deflectiondrive circuit, and the serial interface circuit that handles thecontrols. The video signal input to pin 6 of CN403 firstpasses through the Q102 buffer, then its levels are adjustedby RV251 (CONTRAST) of the VR box. The input is thenseparated into the main video signal and peaking videosignal behind the Q103 buffer. The main signal passes through amplifiers Q106 and Q108.After the peaking signal passes through amplifiers Q107and Q109, its levels are adjusted by RV252 (PEAKING) ofthe VR box. The signal passes through buffer Q110, thenthe peaking signal and the main signal are combinedtogether again in IC102. This signal is clamped by theblanking pulse at IC102, and the black levels are stabilized. The signal is then amplified by Q111 and Q104, and passesthrough the clamp and blanking circuits of Q105 andQ135, it is supplied to the CRT first grid.

SYNC Separation/Horizontal Oscillation/VerticalOscillation Output Circuit (VF-81/VF-82 Board)After passing through the video buffer Q102, the signal isinput into pin 2 of IC204. There, the divided horizontalSYNC signal is output from pin 1 and input into pin 1 ofIC201, while the vertical SYNC signal is output from pin 3and input into pin 21 of IC201. IC201 provides anotherhorizontal oscillation output circuit, where the horizontaloscillation frequency is triggered by the horizontal SYNCsignal. The comparison pulse from the horizontal output signal isadded to pin 5 of IC201 and is phase-detected with thehorizontal SYNC signal. This output controls the horizon-tal oscillation reference voltage, and as a result, thehorizontal synchronization is performed. After the dutyratio are determined for the horizontal drive pulse outputfrom pin 12 of IC201, it is input into pin 4 of CN304 onthe VF-82 board. This output is amplified by the amplifiersQ305 and Q306, and is then added to the gate of Q301.The horizontal output signal of the horizontal outputcircuit, which consists of Q301, C304, and FBT, drives thehorizontal deflection coil. RV200 (H HOLD) adjusts thehorizontal oscillation frequency. The vertical oscillation output circuit on IC201 triggers thevertical oscillation frequency, and the sawtooth waveformof V period is generated.

Then the vertical output pulse from IC201 drives thevertical deflection coil. The following variable resistors are mounted around theIC201.RV206 (V SIZE) ................ for vertical frame size

High-Voltage Output Circuit and High-VoltageStabilized Circuit (VF-82/VF-85 Board)The horizontal drive pulse output from pin 13 of IC201 isused for the horizontal deflection coil drive and is also sentto the VF-82 board. It is amplified by the amplifiers Q305and Q306, and then added to the gate of Q301.The high-voltage drive pulse made from the Q301, C304,and FBT signals drive the flyback transformer on the VF-85 board. The flyback transformer on the VF-85 boardoutputs high voltage, medium voltage, low voltage, andheater voltage. The high voltage is supplied to the anodevoltage of the CRT, the medium voltage is supplied to thescreen and focus voltage, and the low voltage is supplied tothe video output and the BRIGHT circuit. Furthermore, thevariation of the high-voltage output voltage from theflyback transformer on the VF-85 board is detected andinput to pin 3 of IC302.The input detection voltage from pin 3 is compared to theset voltage on RV302, and the difference is output frompin 7.The output voltage from pin 7 is controlled through theQ302 gate to keep the high-voltage output voltage from theflyback transformer on the VF-85 board constant.

The following variable resistors are mounted around theIC302.RV302 (HV ADJ) .............. for high-voltage output voltage

Switching Power Supply Circuit (PS-703 Board)The +9.5 V DC constant voltage is generated by supplyingan input voltage of 10.5 V to 17 V DC to the chopperregulator circuit. The IC501 controls the oscillation pulse width by feed-backing the chopper output voltage at Q503 to pin 2 viaRV501 and comparing it with the reference input voltageat pin 1.This difference output controls the Q503 gate after goingthrough Q501 and Q502.The Q503 output voltage is then smoothed by the follow-ing devices to output a DC voltage of +9.5 V DC.D502, L502, C507, and L503, C508, L504, C510, C509RV501 (+9.5 V ADJ) ....... for output voltage adjustment

Blanking Circuit (VF-81 Board)The blanking pulse is generated by adding the horizontalpulse and vertical pulse for IC208 and IC202.The generated blanking pulse is input into the base ofQ105 and Q135, as well as IC208 (black levels stabilizedby the clamping), and blanking is carried out.

Tally and Control Circuit (VF-81/CN-2742 Board)Q801 on the CN-2742 board is a supply voltage variablecircuit for the tally lamp on the LE-303 board. The DIM-MER control (RV254) controls the output voltage level. The luminance of the tally lamp varies according to thefluctuation in the output level from EXT DC.IC405 and Q403 turn on and off the tally lamp on the LE-303 board. Setting the TALLY switch from the R TALLYIN terminal (pin 4) of the SW202 and CN801 connectorsto ON will switch Q403 to on or off depending on the stateof IC405. Current will run through the tally lamp of LE-303 board and turn the tally lamp on and off.

The R TALLY IND signal (pin 4) of the CN801 connectoris added to the base of Q405 and Q407 via pin 3 on CN807and CN403.When the R TALLY COUNT signal is high, Q405 andQ407 are turned on, and the R TALLY LEDs (D605,D602/LE-304, -305 board) are lit.

The G TALLY CONT signal from the G TALLY INterminal (pin 12) of the CN801 connector is added to thebase of Q404 and Q408 via pin 9 on CN807 and CN403.When the G TALLY COUNT signal is high, Q404 andQ408 are turned on, and the G TALLY LEDs (D606,D603/LE-304, -305 board) are lit.

The 16 : 9 CONT signal from the 16 : 9 terminal (pin 7) ofthe CN801 connector is added to the base of Q208 (NTSC)and Q210 (CCIR) via pin 8 on CN807 and CN403.When the 16 : 9 signal is high, Q208 (NTSC) and Q210(CCIR) are turned on, and the screen size changes to 16:9.

The NTSC/CCIR signal (pin 11) of the CN801 connectoris added to the base of Q209 (SIZE) and Q211 (PHASE)via pin 10 on CN807 and CN403.When the NTSC/CCIR control signal is high, the unit willoperate in CCIR mode. When the signal is low, it willoperate in NTSC mode.

2-4-3. Trouble Shooting

1. First, check cables, connectors and contacts forloosening and disconnection, and signal input andpower supply conditions before servicing the view-finder.

2. Next, check the position of the controls. If controls are not set at appropriate position, nopicture may appear; for example, if CONTRASTcontrol and BRIGHTNESS control are set at fullycounterclockwise position, no picture is produced.

3. Be sure to check if each board is connected by theconnectors properly.

4. First, check the power supply voltage. If the regulatorcircuit (PS-703 board) is in malfunction, other circuitsdo no work properly. Also, when the power supply oneach board is short or open.

5. Trouble may concern either a signal or plural circuits.

2-4-4. Unleaded Solder

Boards requiring use of unleaded solder are printed with alead free mark (LF) indicating the solder contains no lead.(Caution: Some printed circuit boards may not comeprinted with the lead free mark due to their particular size.)

: LEAD FREE MARK

m. Be sure to use the unleaded solder for the printed circuit

board printed with the lead free mark.. The unleaded solder melts at a temperature about 40 dC

higher than the ordinary solder, therefore, it is recom-mended to use the soldering iron having a temperatureregulator.

. The ordinary soldering iron can be used but the iron tiphas to be applied to the solder joint for a slightly longertime. The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel away ifthe heated tip is applied for too long, so be careful.

Section 5Semiconductor Pin Assignments

The following describes the semiconductor types used inthis unit. For semiconductors marked with page numbers in theindex, refer to the corresponding pages in this section. However, in some cases incompatible types are also listed, therefore, when a part is to be replaced, also refer to theSpare Parts section. In addition, for semiconductors with ID Nos., refer to theseparate CD-ROM titled “Semiconductor Pin Assignments”(Sony Part No. 9-968-546-xx) that allows searching forparts by semiconductor type or ID No.The semiconductors in the manual or on the CD-ROM arelisted by equivalent types. Thus the external view or theindex mark indication may differ from the actual type.Pin assignments and block diagrams are based on the ICmanufacturer’s data book.
