For the first time in program history, Cal State Monterey Bay earned its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season title, after finishing the season at 24-2 overall and 20-2 in the CCAA. The Otters’ only two losses this season came against Cal Poly Pomona (58-55) on Jan. 28 and at UC San Diego (58-48) on Feb. 5. Since the loss to the Tritons, CSUMB is riding a six-game win streak heading into the conference tournament this week. The Otters don’t have one player on this year’s roster averaging in double-figures -- Julie Heurung, the team’s leading scorer, is scoring 9.8 points per contest. It is the defense that is getting the job done this season, as Cal State Monterey Bay has the nation’s number one defense, allowing just 50.4 points per game. Heurung also leads the team in rebounds with 6.6 per game. Sonoma State was swept by Cal State Monterey Bay in the regular season series this year, as the Seawolves have dropped four straight games to the Otters. SSU leads the all-time series, though, 10-5. Sonoma State in the CCAA Tournament The CCAA Championship Tournament has been around for 16 years, but the conference did not hold a tournament between 1999 and 2007 (SSU joined the CCAA in the 1998- 99 season). Since the CCAA has brought back the tournament in 2008, Sonoma State has made just one appearance. It was that year when the Seawolves defeated archrival Humboldt State, 65-55, in the opening round back on Mar. 4, 2008, but then fell in the semifinals to UC San Diego, 57-55, three days later. Tournament Central The first round of the CCAA Championship Tournament is being held the campus sites of the four highest seeds -- No. 1 Cal State Monterey Bay, No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona, No. 3 UC San Diego and No. 4 Cal State San Bernardino. After Tuesday’s first round games, the CCAA will turn its sights to the campus of Cal State East Bay in Hayward for the semifinal and final rounds on Friday and Saturday, respectively. For schedules, results and ticket information, visit the CCAA web site at http://www.goccaa.org. What's at Stake... Should Sonoma State earn three wins this weekend and claim the CCAA tournament title, the Seawolves would grab the automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament to be held next weekend. Sonoma State has appeared in the NCAA tournament six times, all under head coach Mark Rigby. The last appearance by SSU was back in 2008, but the Seawolves fell to Alaska Anchorage in the opening round, 70-53 (Mar. 24, 2008).

More News and Notes

Henington, Bisordi Lead SSU to Weekend SweepNeeding two victories to stay in playoff contention, the Sonoma State women’s basket-ball team played with spirit and high emotion on Wednesday night, showing that they are worthy of being a playoff team. The Seawolves, led by the 12 points of Jaclyn Bisordi cruised to a convincing 52-38 victory over visiting Cal State L.A. Then, on Friday, behind a career-high 22 points from Aly Henington, the Sonoma State women’s basketball team closed out the regular season with a 55-43 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, clinching the eighth and final spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Thank You, Oly!A four-year player for head coach Mark Rigby, Oly Larkin came in as a freshman in 2007-08 and helped the Seawolves to a 20-10 record and a NCAA tournament appearance. She appeared in all but two games that season. Oly has been a mainstay in the lineup ever since and will be playing in her 101tst career game on Tuesday. Earlier this season, she became one of 32 players in program history to score at least 500 points in a career. Oly has scored 561 points in 100 games played, an average of 5.6 points per game. She played in her final collegiate home game on Saturday, scoring five points and grabbing three rebounds in 28 minutes of play.

500 ClubJunior Jaclyn Bisordi has become the 32nd Sonoma State women’s basketball student-athlete to exceed 500 points in a career. Bisordi scored her 500th career point in the 67-46 loss against Cal State East Bay on Jan. 29. She is also the second player this season to reach 500 for her career -- Oly Larkin, the only senior on this year’s team, scored her 500th career point in a victory over San Francisco State on Jan. 13.

Conway Right On TargetJunior Aly Conway has been a huge threat down low for the Seawolves this season, and her shooting efficiency is a direct result of that. Her 53.6 percent shooting from the floor is the CCAA’s best mark this season, as she’s connecting on 75 of 140 in the 24 games that she’s appeared in. Conway is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.8 points per con-test. The 6-foot forward from Martinez also leads the team and is sixth in the conference in rebounds with 7.0 per game. Conway is also second in the CCAA in offensive rebounds (3.6/game).

2010-11 Sonoma State Women's Basketball

Mark Rigby returns for his 14th season as head coach of the Seawolves in 2010-11. The winningest coach in SSU women’s basketball history, Rigby has led his teams to an impressive 204-155 mark in 13 years at SSU. In con-ference play, Rigby’s Seawolves have amassed a record of 150-116.

Rigby has delivered a winning season in nine of his 13 seasons at the helm, including three 20-win seasons. In his first two years at Sonoma State, Rigby led his team to back-to-back 20-plus win seasons, including a school-record 23 victories in 1998-99. His teams have participated in the NCAA West Regionals six times, a feat no other basketball coach has ac-complished at SSU. A true student of the game, Rigby’s squads emphasize teamwork, defense, and hustle.

In 1997-98, Rigby led SSU to their first-ever conference championship and what was at the time a school record 20 wins. In addition, the team enjoyed their first trip to the NCAA tournament. He capped off the season by being named NCAC Coach of the Year. Rigby was also honored as CCAA Co-Coach of the Year after guiding his 2001-02 team to a 21-8 record and the second round of the NCAA tourney.

One of the most successful high school coaches in the area, Rigby was the head coach at Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa for ten seasons. At Ursuline, he compiled an oustanding 253-54 record while capturing nine North Bay League championships and the 1992 CIF Division IV State Champi-onship. After his stint at Ursuline, Rigby joined the staff at Santa Rosa Junior College for two years prior to his arrival at Sonoma State.
