I f you are among the over 25 million Kenyans who do not have access to electricity or if you experience frequent power outages, there is a solution for you in a new range of solar products – solar portable lights. These new solar portable lights come in the form of a stand-alone lighting appliance complete with a solar panel, battery and casing and offer a perfect alternative to kerosene or paraffin lamps. Despite their size, they provide brighter, cleaner lighting for a longer period of time. They are affordable and within the price range of the people living in the rural areas. The new solar portable lamps are cheaper than the traditional Solar Home Systems: today, you can choose from a range of good quality lights priced from Ksh 2,000-8,000. This is in contrast to the larger Solar Home Systems priced at Ksh 10,000-25,000 and beyond the reach of the rural population segments that need them most. But above all, considering the Ksh 20-50 that an average household in Kenya spends on a daily basis on kerosene (Ksh 7,200 – 14,000 annually) for lighting, solar portable lights are a great bargain. The benefits of using clear energy however extend beyond financial gains and savings. Solar portable lights do not emit toxic fumes, and are therefore a clean and healthy source of lighting for the family. Furthermore, at three times better illumination than kerosene lamps, children can study for longer in a smoke free room and enhance their education. Business also stands to gain by extending their working hours, thereby generating additional incomes. Rapid technological advancement in the last five years has contributed to the development of these new lights. Today, solar portable lights provide brighter illumination. Some even include mobile phone chargers. Their batteries last longer and their performance is covered by a warranty by leading manufacturers. But with the technological gains, a concern has also emerged in the rise in the number of low quality products filtering into the market. Lighting Africa, a joint IFC and World Bank program promoting the market transformation from kerosene based lighting to portable solar lights has taken the lead in setting quality standards in this new sector. The program has developed a quality testing methodology. The program has tested a range of solar portable lights in the Kenyan market to assist consumers in distinguishing between quality products that will provide better, longer and safer illumination in homes, schools and businesses, and sub standards lights. The products which have passed Lighting Africa quality tests so far: • Firefly 12 + Mobile phone charger • PowaPack 12v/5Wp • Dlight Nova • Greenlight planet Sunking • Philips Mini Uday • Solux LED 50 • Suntransfer ST2 The program has in addition set up a text message service– send an sms text to 3515 to get an updated list of the Lighting Africa supported products. “Songa Mbele na Solar” is a Lighting Africa consumer awareness campaign aimed at creating awareness of the benefits of solar lighting. It promotes products that have passed the quality tests through an extensive direct marketing campaign. The program also offers support to manufacturers and distributors of solar portable lights.
