I f you are among the over 25 million Kenyans who do not have access to electricity or if you experience frequent power outages, there is a solution for you in a new range of solar products – solar portable lights. These new solar portable lights come in the form of a stand-alone lighting appliance complete with a solar panel, battery and casing and offer a perfect alternative to kerosene or paraffin lamps. Despite their size, they provide brighter, cleaner lighting for a longer period of time. They are affordable and within the price range of the people living in the rural areas. Furthermore, at three times better illumination than kerosene lamps, children can study for longer in a smoke free room and enhance their education. Business also stands to gain by extending their working hours, thereby generating additional incomes. Rapid technological advancement in the last five years has contributed to the development of these new lights. Today, solar portable lights provide brighter illumination. But with the technological gains, a concern has also emerged in the rise in the number of low quality products filtering into the market. Lighting Africa, a joint IFC and World Bank program promoting the market transformation from kerosene based lighting to portable solar lights has taken the lead in setting quality standards in this new sector. The program has tested a range of solar portable lights in the Kenyan market to assist consumers in distinguishing between quality products that will provide better, longer and safer illumination in homes, schools and businesses, and sub standards lights.
