However, during a season of giving scammers take advantage. While you are busy shopping, scams can easily be disguised and go under the radar. Below are some things to watch for to protect yourself during this holiday season and throughout the year. Use a credit card for online transactions Whenever you are required to give out card numbers for a transaction, you can help protect yourself and your funds by using a credit card versus a debit card. Your credit card isn't connected to your main source of money. If there does happen to be fraudulant charges, waiting for your money to be returned will not be as stressful on credit versus a debit. Check your account history often If you prefer to use a checking account for your spending, monitor your accounts and make sure you recognize each transaction as your own. Scammers like to target large holiday sale days to conduct their charges as they are less likely to be noticed amongst holiday shopping expenses. If you do see something, call the number on the back of your card right away. Donate to charities you know and trust People take advantage of the kindness and compassion of others through false disaster relief fundraisers or Go Fund Me pages with no intent to give to the cause you wish to support. To avoid these scams, research the companies you would like to support and make sure they are trusted entities. Free (Just Pay Shipping) offers Ads on social media for "free" merchandise are everywhere. Consumer beware, often times when credit card information is required, it is a scam. Either the companies inflate shipping costs to more than what the item is worth, or they take your credit card numbers with no intent of shipping the item. Hiway Credit Union Foundation Inaugural event a success for financial literacy!

In March of 2018, Hiway launched an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Hiway Credit Union Foundation. The Foundation aims to increase support through tax-deductible charitable donations and volunteer opportunities in our community. On November 8, 2018, the Foundation held its inaugural fundraising event and it was a huge success. Business partners, fellow Minnesota credit unions and educators all came out to support by joining us at the Saint Paul Curling Club. With over 100 curlers participating, the Foundation looks to use the raised funds to support efforts in financial literacy throughout 2019.
