FROM THE PRESIDENT

Boy, it just goes to show you that you never know…I went to the Real Magic Road Show at the Peabody Holiday Inn on April 6th. I was unable to stay the whole day, but the time I spent there was fun. I had a great time. Mark Mason, Paul Richards from Elmwood Magic, Tony Karpinski, Chris Smith, Losander, and our own Eddie Gardner were the dealers. From all reports, things went well. It was kind of like the dealer’s room at a convention, but with short demonstrations by each dealer from time to time. I saw lots of magician friends and acquaintances, most of whom I haven’t seen since SAMCON. One of the people I spoke with was Ed Hill from the Rhode Island SAM. We had a short, but nice chat. A couple of days later he died. What a shock. Ed was among the performers who came up for our Officer’s Installation Banquet last year. Ed was a nice guy. He had a vast knowledge of magic history. He will be missed. Don’t take any day for granted! Enjoy your life! It passes too quickly!

The Nominating Committee has a list of candidates for office and the election will be held at our meeting in May.

I have decided that this will be my last year as President. It has been an honor to serve, but I believe that it is time to give someone else the chance to take the reins. I had a few goals that I hoped to achieve while President. One was to set up some type of event during July or August when we do not have meetings so that we can keep in touch over the summer. Last year, we had our first SAM104 BBQ, Flea Market, SYM Competition and Summer Outing. It went well. Everyone seemed to have a great time. As previously announced, we will be doing it again this year on August 25th. Hopefully this is something we can keep going. Here’s your chance to sell off some of the stuff you bought but don’t use at better than auction prices, and replace it with new stuff that you buy from the other sellers! It never ends! THANKS to Jim and Debbie Loscutoff for allowing us to have the event at Camp Evergreen!

Another of my goals was to try to collect all the memorabilia and records of SAM104 and get them together in one place. Currently, it is passed down from President to President or in some cases to members, and is not available to the members to look at. Some things are lost forever. I have been able to get some things back from members and past Presidents, and have received donations of SAM104 related items from members. I am happy to report that we now have a place in the First Baptist Church to store everything together. THANKS to J Hubbard for getting it for us. Soon we will get everything to the church and will make it available for viewing. Bob and Kathy Forrest have a display case that they are donating to the group and we will be placing awards and other things into the case for you to see. THANKS Bob and Kathy.

J Hubbard and Bill Marotte have volunteered to serve as the Auditing Committee and will have a full report for the members soon. THANKS J and Bill!

Again, it is my pleasure to serve as your President. If there is anything I, or any of the Officers, can do to make your membership in SAM104 better, please let us know and we will do our best to make it happen.

Share the magic that is YOU!

Secretary's Report May 2013 on April 2013 meeting

The evening’s School of Magic class was a study on Cups and Balls, including colored balls in the mix. Following this, the business portion of our meeting began at 7:45 p.m. The secretary’s report was acknowledged as printed in the current Cauldron. The treasurer’s report was then presented by Kathy Forrest.Jim Loscutoff then outlined the activities at the end of March S.Y.M. 124 meeting. The kids held their “Olympics,” with “Duct Tape” Mike Milan captaining one team and Kayla Drescher helming the other one. Head shots of the children were taken and they will shortly be featured on the S.Y.M. 104 website. Some videos were also taken and are awaiting review. An update on SAMCON was presented by Evan Buso-Jarnis. Evan reported that we currently have both Bill Abbott and Eugene Berger signed up for the November convention. Eugene will be conducting a Master Class on Sunday, the day after SAMCON. The fee will be one hundred dollars for the three hour class. Mr. Berger will also be offering a special close up show on the Friday night before SAMCON. Convention tickets will admit folks to the Friday night offering, with no additional charge. Those unregistered for SAMCON will be charged a nominal fee for this additional event. The Holiday Inn contract is signed; additional details on SAMCON will be forthcoming as they develop.Kayla and Evan were thanked for their amazing performance at last month’s meeting. At that point Kayla Drescher received congratulatory applause for her winning the Today Show Monday Magic competition on NBC. She explained that her video placed her on the program and into the finalist competition for what would have been the Today Show magic trophy alone. The surprise came when Judge David Copperfield threw in the additional prize of a trip to Las Vegas and a personal visit to his private magic museum. The assembly is very proud of Kayla and her many achievements in the short time she has been with us. She was pleasantly surprised to discover the “Congratulations, Kayla” cake awaiting her in the back of the hall. In Health and Wellness, President Bill Jensen reported Dick Newcomb continuing on the long road to recovery and “J” Hubbard as understandably absent from the night’s gathering while he recuperates from shoulder surgery. On a solemn note, long-time member Jim Rainho’s wife was reported as having very recently passed away. Bill mentioned the national convention’s solicitation for program ads. The assembly voted to put in a quarter page ad.The nominating committee report was presented by Jim Loscutoff. The current line-up stands at Bill Jensen continuing as president; Eddie Gardner as Vice President; John Hubbard as Sergeant-At-Arms; Bob Forrest as secretary; Kathy Forrest looking for a replacement as treasurer; and finally: the hotly contested second vice president position, between current office holder Rob Snider and contender Tim Levesque. The meeting ended at 8:00 p.m. and seats were taken for our lecturer Ed Ellis. Next meeting’s lecturer will be Kainoa Harbottle.

Respectfully Submitted,Bob Forrest, Secretary

Post ScriptsPost Scripts - Addenda - Afterthoughts FOX- TV's MASKED MAGICIAN'S LAWS OF MAGIC.1. The secret of success in Magic is sincerity. Once you can fake it, you've got it made.2. Practise is its own punishment.3. If at first the trick doesn't work, you probably bought it from Y.F.D4. Any effect is possible if you don't know what you're taiking about.5. Magicians don't copy each other. lt's just that they all own a set of linking rings.6. The day you'd sell your soul for a good mental effect, souls become a glut.7. If the effect fits your style, it's probably not good for your image.8. All magicians lie, but it makes no difference, since no one listens.9. For every miracle, there's an equal and opposite criticism.10. Never attribute to plagerism that which is adequately expiained by thievery.11. If the effect really wows them, you're not doing it according to the instructions.12. If your act doesn't sell, you've stolen the wrong act.13. A magician's credibility is inverse proportion to the number of sequins on his suit.14. As long as you don't have to prove it, your method is the better one.

Meetings are held at First Baptist Church, 296 Lafayette Street, Salem, Ma., on the first Wednesday of every month from September to June.

Assembly 104 member and SYM leader Kayla Drescher in the news:

Copperfield Picks Next “Great Magician”David Copperfield made the tough choice of successor, sort of, as part of the NBC Today Show’s Magic Mondays.

Mr. Copperfield chose Ms. Drescher to win the show’s Magic Mondays trophy plus a trip to witness the master magician’s acclaimed Las Vegas show currently at his home in the desert, the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.

Mr. Copperfield correctly observed, “to have more women doing magic is a great thing. We’d like to see more of that.”

Congratulations to KAYLA for bringing home the big win.
