PRINCIPAL’S NEWS - Kirsty Squire
Tree Assessment
Last Wednesday we had Advanced Treescape Consulting here to assess
the safety of the trees in the school grounds. I’m pleased to say that in
his expert opinion we have no trees that are posing an immediate
threat to the safety of students, staff and parents in areas that are
frequently used in the school grounds. When the full report comes in it
will be tabled at the next P&C meeting and relevant parts will be put in
the newsletter.
Harmony Day
Last Friday was Harmony Day and was recognised by our school with a
whole school art activity with students working together to create a
lovely piece of art that will be displayed in the office towards the end of
the week.
Bus Safety Talk
Last Friday we also had Busways come to talk to the
students about safety on the bus and expected
behaviours. It served as a timely reminder to all, even
those who don’t regularly catch the bus, that their behaviour is
monitored and can have a large impact on the safety of all on the bus.
Year 5/6 Kariong Mountains High School Meeting
Mrs Anne Vine, the Principal of KMHS visited the school today to speak
with Year 5/6 students and their parents.
Stage 2 and 3 Excursions
Deposits for both excursions are due in before Wednesday 2nd April.
ENVIRONMENT GROUP
Just a reminder - we're still searching for good
quality second hand bricks or pavers to tidy up
our can recycling area.
Does anyone know someone who could help?

Did you know?
Some historians believe the
April Fools’ custom began
in France. Possibly stem-
ming from a calendar
change in the 16th Century
when the Gregorian
calendar was adopted. This
change New Years Day
from April 1 to January 1.
People who continued to
celebrate New Years on
April 1 were referred to as
April Fools and others
played tricks on them.

Year 2 - don't forget to bring in or borrow a book from the library that
you'd like to keep in our classroom and read during our D.E.A.R time.

YEAR 6
Year 6 will be holding a lolly guessing competition commencing later
this week. Money raised will go towards their gift to the school. The
cost will be 20 cents per guess.
We had a productive year 6 parent meeting last Thursday and
preparations are underway. A summary of the meeting was sent home
with students on Friday. Thank you to those who were able to be
present.
Today I attended the Regional Swimming Carnival. The class was taken
by Mr Noud.
HANDBALL COMPETITION
Last week saw the running of a Year3-6 teams handball competition.
Well done to everyone for participating in the right spirit.
Congratulations to the aptly named “Winners” team for taking out the
event. Team members were; Jake, Henna and Ethan.
Many considered the highlight to be the Winners vs teachers match
up. The staff wound back the clock (a lot of winding for some) to take
out the encounter.

LIBRARY
Please find attached information about next week’s visit from Central
Coast author Judy Townsend. We are very excited to have Judy visit
Somersby and teach us how to make an idea become a book. Parents
are invited to join us for these sessions.
Dance
Thank you for returning your
audition permission notes.
Recording will take place at
school next week. Our dance is
coming along nicely. It's very
different to anything we have
done before so we have everything crossed that the committee enjoys
our piece.

TERM DATES

faithfully plants seeds in
the Spring, who reaps a
harvest in the Autumn.

Debating
A big well done to all of 5/6 on your hard work in debating this term. You
have really grasped the concepts and have put together some great ideas
and arguments. It's such a shame I can only put in two teams.

Office News
As the term will be coming to an end in a couple of weeks, I have sent out
absence notes still outstanding for this term. If you could return them with
an explanation so that these absences are not recorded on your child’s
record cards as “unjustified.”
Notes and things
All permission notes, absence notes and monies are to go to the teachers in
the first instance and then these will be given to the office to process.
School website
The website is updated regularly with calendar events, notes and
information. If anyone has any ideas on how to improve the website or our
newsletter please do not hesitate to send a note in or call the office and let
us know your thoughts. We are always striving to get better.
Parent On Line Payments
It’s great to see a few parents paying online. If you haven’t tried it then
please don’t hesitate to ask how or go to the website and you’ll find the
“How To” instructions.
New Finance and Administration Package
I went to a conference in Sydney yesterday to hear all the updated
information on the new LMBR system being rolled out to schools. In the long
run I am sure the new system will be of great advantage to schools and
parent’s as there will be a “Parent Portal” for parents to access information .
But in saying this the change will be lengthy and fraught with the nightmares
of ‘change’. So please bear with us in the long haul of change!

Easter raffle - Easter is just around the corner, and to celebrate, we’ll be holding an Easter raffle. If you
would like to donate a basket, eggs or other Easter chocolate, please leave your donation in the school
office.
Splash-a-thon
We’re looking forward to finalising the Splash-a-thon sponsorship and seeing how much the students
raised for the school. If your child hasn’t yet returned their card and Splash-a-thon money, can they
please do so this week. Thanks.
Uniform orders
The uniform shop is now open on Tuesday mornings between 8am and 9am. An updated uniform order
form is available from the shop or on the school website. If you’re unable to visit the uniform shop on
Tuesdays, please drop your completed order form and payment into the school office. Payment should
be made to the Somersby P&C Association by cash or cheque. If you need help with uniform orders,
please contact Kirrily Green on email, [email protected].
Next meeting
The P&C will meet at 7pm in the school library on Wednesday, April 2.
Each year 1,800 public school children in need come to Stewart House from many parts of NSW and the ACT.
During their stay, children are provided with optometric, dental and medical treatment as well as emotional support.
This is balanced with health and educational programs and out of school activities to boost their self-esteem and to promote a healthier lifestyle.
Children in the care of Stewart House attend a specific purpose school onsite for 8 days of their 12-day stay.
The NSW Department of Education and Communities provides infrastructure and staff-ing support for this school.
All others costs associated with the childrens' stay are met from charitable donations.
Please return your envelope
with a donation by the end of
this week to go into the
‘holiday’ draw.
