SoMenath Maity

Somenath Maity revives the city’s glitter in his canvas. He captures its luminescence and also its darkness. The city is Somenath Maity’s muse. His fascination for the big, bustling metropolis with its structures, seething mass of humanity, its maze of streets, the nooks and alleys, the hidden stairways and secret by-lanes are all transferred to the viewer as they remain transfixed by his work. And with magical detail the skyline of a city emerges, strong bold and beautiful fading away into the sky.

The city stands strong, etched in history never to be forgotten its glory to be forever bathed in, but somewhere through the course of its story the memory of the people that built it has evaporated.

Maity’s paintings require contemplative viewing of the play of light and shadows and objects of everyday life that beckons and leads the viewer, through their simplicity, to the thoughts that fuel his work.

With numerous one-man exhibitions in India as well as abroad to his credit, including shows in Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom, Somenath Maity’s paintings also enjoy the pride of being placed in prestigious permanent collections like those of the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Lalit Kala Academy, in New Delhi, the Fukuoka Museum in Japan and also in several corporate and private collections all over the world.

Somenath Maity currently lives and works in Gopalpur, West Bengal.
