I hope each of you enjoyed your three day Labor Day Holiday weekend! Personally, I am looking forward to football weather. I love the beauty and climate of our Oklahoma Fall Sea-son.

Things are back in full swing after the summer for Head Start and KATS staff. We are in the process of our annual agency audit by our independent auditor.

We have received notice of award for the fourth year of funding for our SSVF (Supportive Service for Veteran’s Families) in 24 counties in Eastern Oklahoma. We are very pleased with our outstanding staff who will meet their goals for this year.

Tom Marlatt, Larry Hall, Linda Love, Kenny Barnhart, Royce Alverson, Amy Fair, and I attended the National Community Action Partnership Annual Conference in Aus-tin, TX on August 29-September 2, 2016. Congratulations are also in order for Larry Hall, Kenny Barnhart, Royce Alverson, and Amy Fair who received their National CCAP Certification renewal. We have fourteen Nationally Certified CCAP’s in our agency.

New For Mary Montgomery Mary Montgomery started working on a C-WEP Program through the Department of Human Services in June of 1984. This pro-gram brought Montgomery to KI BOIS Community Action as a transit driver for KATS. The program would run for eight weeks, but Montgomery didn’t last eight weeks. She was hired by KI BOIS Community Action in August as a full time KATS driver. Montgomery worked for 13 years and became supervisor after seven years.

Since that time Montgomery has worked, took a leave of absence and in 2004 came back to KI BOIS Community Action. At this time Montgomery worked in the Rx for Oklahoma Pro-gram, VITA, Medicare D, receptionist and working with individuals in the emergency services program. Then in 2006 Developmental Disabilities (DD) Director Kenny Barnhart ap-proached her about working in the DD program as a coordinator. She stayed in the DD Pro-gram and in 2009 took on an additional hat back in transit. Montgomery once again took a leave of absence in 2011 only to come back in 2014 in the DD program.

Today, Montgomery is sporting a new hat not in the KATS or DD Programs, but in the Re-tired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). When RSVP Director Marcia Mitchell decided it was time to retire, Montgomery thought this would be a great time to expand her horizons and work with the senior citizen population. According to Montgomery, “I am happy, but scared because I have a lot to learn, but I am having a great time. I love to talk to our senior popula-tion and just stand back as they perform their jobs....they have a lot to offer and they love to share. Montgomery went on to say even if they are just folding napkins for lunch…...they have fun and it gives them a purpose to get up in the morning.

Mary has two chil-dren, Bradley and his wife, Andria and her daughter , Hailey, and two grandchildren Elli and James. They all live in Poteau.

Congratulations Mary on your new title!

(Editor’s Note….I want to take this time to give an update on Montgomery's granddaughter, Elli. In the November 2014 Issue of KI BOIS News I did a story on Elli. Just to recap…... Elli’s eyes did-n’t fully develop which caused her to be born with glauco-ma. She had her first sur-gery when she was only eleven days old and to date has had numerous surgeries and a cornea transplant.

Elli will turn five in November and her dream of attending school is a reality as she is a kindergartener in the Poteau School System.

Elli has been referred to as a miracle with million dollar eyes.)

Congratulations Supportive Services for Veterans Families not only for your work with veterans and their families but receiving the funding

which makes it possible!

Want to make your water more flavorful? Choose to infuse! Liven up your glass with these mouthwatering ideas: Flavored ice cubes. Freeze fruit in an ice tray with some water and add the cubes to your water for a flavorful addition. Fresh or frozen fruits. Strawberries, lemons, oranges or cucumbers will give your water a fruity kick… and you’ll be left with a tasty treat when you’re finished. Herbs and flavor extracts. Infuse warm water with mint leaves or vanilla extract, then pour over ice for a delicious drink. Crushed ice. Just a change in texture can make your water that much more enjoyable. Making infused water is simple! Just follow these instructions: RINSE your fruit or veggies under cold water to clean them. CHOP your fruit or veggies into thin slices or small cubes. DROP your fruit or veggies into your water-filled bottle or pitcher. WAIT an hour or so to let the flavors infuse. The longer it sits, the more flavorful the water will be. DRINK up and refill for more! - For some great recipes see more at: http://shapeyourfutureok.com/rethink-your-drink/infused-water/#sthash.YNpkQYQL.dpuf This healthy tip came from Denice Daniels, KI BOIS CAF Wellness Coordinator Haskell and Latimer County Healthy Living Program

KATS Drivers show the safety first signs….left to right are Tresa Wallis, Manuel Fixi-co, Maggie Coon, Martha Roberts, and Sarah Robertson

Safety Reminders Everywhere! Okemah KATS drivers are being safe and thinking safe as there are safety first signs in their office and in their vehicles. According to Okemah KATS Supervisor Drusilla Dearman, “These signs will remind us to be safe while we are driving. Also, the driv-ers will receive an incentive card for not having an accident each month. The drivers are excited and we hope to make a difference!”

Organizational Standards……by Linda Love This month we are going to continue our review of the new organizational standards, specifically, we are going to look at Vision and Direction: Board Governance. CATEGORY FIVE: Board Governance Community Action boards are uniquely structured to ensure maximum feasible participation by the en-tire community, including those the network serves. By law, Community Action boards are comprised of at least 1/3 low-income consumers (or their representatives), 1/3 elected officials (or their appoin-tees), and the remainder private-sector community members. To make this structure work as intended, CAAs must recruit board members thoughtfully, work within communities to promote opportunities for board service, and orient, train, and support them in their oversight role. Boards are foundational to good organizational performance and the time invested to keep them healthy and active is significant, but necessary. Community Action boards are called tri-partite boards because of the three sectors required. KI BOIS Community Action has a great board and board members who care about our mission and the work we do. If you run into a board member, let them know how much we appreciate them and their service to our agency. The Vision and Direction section includes one more category: Strategic Planning. There are only five standards under strate-gic planning. We will look at those next month. Thanks for read-ing and check back next month. Happy Football Season! Linda
