Some Descendants of Willis Brewer of North Carolina and Ohio

Willis Brewer first came to my attention while examining the correspondence of William B. Bogardus regarding Brouwer, Brower and Brewer families. A number of his correspondents were of the belief that Willis Brewer, who apparently was born in North Carolina, was a descendant of Adam Brouwer of Gowanus, Long Island. Most specifically, the claim was that Jacob Brouwer (b.1707) a son of Sybrant Brouwer of New York City, a great-grandson of Adam Brouwer, and great-great grandson of the fabled Anneke Jans. This notion is undoubtedly incorrect and was likely spawned sometime during the late 1800s or early 1900s during one of the great drives to recruit all manner of persons named Brewer or Brower with the hope of cashing in on the imaginary fortune due the heirs of Anneke Jans. These efforts created numerous false lines of ancestry, the claim of Willis Brewer of North Carolina as a son of Jacob Brouwer of New York City, being only one of the more fantastic assertions.

The parents and ancestors of Willis Brewer are, to my knowledge, unknown. Below is a compiled genealogical summery of some of the descendants of Willis Brewer. The correspondence collected by William B. Bogardus during the 1970s through 2000s was used as a starting point. From there, vital records and census records found online were used to confirm claims and to add to the account of the descendants. The summery is certainly not complete, and I would welcome corrections as well as any info that would shed light on the ancestry of Willis Brewer provided it is backed by reliable records. Generation One

1. WILLIS1 BREWER was probably born before 1760 in North Carolina. Willis Brewer has not been identified on the 1790 U.S. census in North Carolina. A Willis Brewer appeared on the census in 1800 Halifax, Northampton Co., North Carolina, with a household of 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female

16-25. This record most likely does NOT pertain to this Willis Brewer.1 Willis Brewer has not been located on the 1810 U.S. census. Records for the state of Ohio for 1810 do not exist. He appeared on the census on 7 Aug 1820 Harrison, Jackson Co., Ohio, with a household of 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male over 45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-

15.2 The ancestry of Willis Brewer is not known. The name of his wife is not known and the children listed have not been confirmed by suitable documentation. This family is currently considered speculative. Some descendants (correspondants with William B. Bogardus) have claimed that Willis is a descendant of Adam Brouwer (Jacob->Sybrant->Jacob->Adam) but offer no proof. This line of descent is certainly incorrect. Descendants have been found in Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, and appear to be numerous. Y-DNA testing of a direct male descendant with the BREWER surname, may be helpful in directing descendants towards their correct ancestry. Children of Willis1 Brewer include: + 2 i. Betsy Moots Ross Co., Ohio, on 6 May 1813. He probably died between 1852 and 1853 Peoria Co., Illinois.

+ 5 iv. Willis was born in 1798 North Carolina. He married Catherine Hoffman Jackson Co., Ohio, on 16 Jun 1824. He died on 11 Oct 1877 Jefferson, Ross Co., Ohio.

6 v. Mariah was born between 1800 and 1810. She married Elisha Dixon Ross Co., Ohio, on 22 Mar

1828.4 + 7 vi. Elizabeth was born circa 1812 North Carolina. She married Richard Dykes Ross Co., Ohio, on

15 May 1830. + 8 vii. James was born in 1813 Ohio. He is said to have married Ellenor Long Pike Co., Ohio, but this

is incorrect. Eleanor did not marry James Brewer, son of Willis Brewer. She married James Brewer, son of John Brewer and Sarah Howell. He married Rebecca Snyder Ross Co., Ohio, on 28 Feb 1833.

4. SOLOMON2 BREWER (Willis1) was born in Jan 1790 North Carolina in Randolph or Chatham County.25,26 He

married Betsy Moots Ross Co., Ohio, on 6 May 1813.27 He probably died between 1852 and 1853 Peoria Co., Illinois.28

"He came to Liberty and Springfield Townships, Ross County, Ohio in in 1804, with a Quaker wagon train."29 He appeared on the census in 1820 Jackson, Jackson Co., Ohio, with a household of 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-25, 2

LaPraire Twp., Marshall Co., Illinois, in 1834 the 2nd settlers in section 25.34 He appeared on the census in 1840 Lafayette Precinct, Marshall Co., Illinois, with a household of 1 male under 5, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30,

1 male 40-50, 2 females under 5, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 15-20, 2 females 20-30, 1 female 40-50.35

Solomon Brewer moved to Peoria Co., Illinois, in 1844 spending six months in Chillicothe.36 He appeared on the census on 15 Sep 1850 Peoria Co., Illinois, Solomon Brewer, age 56, born in North Carolina. Miner. In the household are (all surnamed Brewer); Elizabeth (age 56), Julia (28), Emma (26), Isaac (13), Jane (9), Sarah (10). Enumerated next to
