JUNE 4 – Scrap Metal Collection – Habitat for Humanity BI-ANNUAL SCRAP METAL COLLECTION Saturday, June 4, 2016 9 AM-1 PM Athens County Fair Grounds All kinds of metal are accepted, even if it is still attached to wood or plastic, etc. Many people donate appliances, siding, pipe, mowers and lots more. Donations of aluminum, brass, and copper are especially appreciated. No metals are bought. Metals are sold in Columbus and receipts go toward Habitat’s next house. Donors have the satisfaction that they did not have to send items to the landfill, plus it is a convenient way of cleaning out the garage. JUNE 6 – Southeastern Ohio G.R.O.W (Grow and Retain Our Workforce) Tri-County Career Center, the Nelsonville Chamber of Commerce, and the Area 14 Workforce Development Board are hosting an informative meeting to build a framework for high-quality workforce development and recruiting skilled workers. Across many sectors, local employers are having a hard time filling open job opportunities, retaining workers and attracting youth to their specified career fields. Learn about “growing and retaining our own workforce” through work-based learning opportunities, including job shadowing, internships, co-ops, preapprenticeships, and apprenticeship programs. This free workshop will include opportunities to: Hear about the best practices and established models throughout Ohio and around the country; Connect business and industry partnerships with their educational partners to provide more work-based learning and employment opportunities, along with technical assistance for establishing pre-apprenticeship programs; Discuss the barriers and accountability to youth employment; Gain supportive tools, planning templates and guidelines; and Share knowledge and network with other professionals in the field When? JUNE 18 – Ohio River Sweep on the Hocking River – ASWCDSaturday, June 18, 2016 9 am- 12 noon An interstate event brought to Athens County by Athens Soil and Water Conservation District and the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission. This annual cleanup for the Ohio River and its tributaries brings thousands of volunteers to remove tons of trash and debris from the riverbanks. JUNE 19 – Diaper Drive and Diaper Shower Raffle Event – Salvation Army

To cap off the Diaper Drive and Diaper Shower Raffle Event, the Salvation Army will be hosting a Diaper Shower on June 19, 2016 from 12 pm-4 pm at the Athens Community Center, 701 East State Street. The raffle will take place and there will be refreshments, games, and a chance to see how many diapers were collected! Raffle prizes include items from a dozen local businesses including Brittany Grace Photography, Fluff Bakery, and So Livi’s! JUNE 25 – Athens CASA/GAL Program Superhero 5k Run Run, Volume III June 25, 2016 at 7 am (8 am start) West State Street Park and Bike Path, 398 West State Street, Athens, OhioOnly superheroes with real or imaginary super powers allowed! Superheroes of all ages, shapes, sizes and levels are challengedto showcase their best super power in the Superhero 5k! Strollers, wheelchairs and leashed, polite SuperPets are welcome.All proceeds from the Superhero 5k benefit the Athens CASA/GAL Program and local kids that have experienced abuse or neglect.Come dressed as your favorite superhero and enjoy 3.2ish miles of super, wacky fun. In a Superhero 5k, there are no winners, no losers and no in-betweeners… just a bunch of Superheroes showing off their super powers. After crossing the finish line join inthe fun at the “Battle of the Superheroes,” an epic, good old-fashioned water fight.
