4. Poetry
• A "Nation of Bards"• May seem like an unimportant point, but this is a point of enormous pride
for somalis. Poems are used in every aspect of life in Somali culture. A person might make up a poem while doing chores, or for a relationship. But political leaders will also hire poets to create poems for campaigns and political unrest was centered around the poet
• Mohamed Ibrahim Warsame 'Hadrawi': the Somali Shakespeare
• Many political activists are also poets
Why poetry?
•Rely on oral language rather than written language
•Attempt to adopt national language since the 20's and formally adopted in 1972.•that is not to say they didn't have written language, they just didn't have a universal one
•Folktales/ proverbs/ poetry

ResourceThis is a book written about a Somali immigrant to Britain by a woman who is muslim and of Zulu and Scotitish ancestry but has spent much time interacting with Somalis and somali culture. This book illustrates the central role poety plays in many somalis lifes. Safie the protagonist is a teenage girl who is dealing wit changes in her family when her father who was belived to be dead returns to the family. This book shows how how Safie uses her poery to express herself and her confusion when dealing with changes in her family. It also has examples of poems written by famous somali poets. This is also a valuable resource for people who are unfamiliar with Islamic traditions this book can serve as a powerful tool to make the traditions understandable and relate-able.This is an excellent resource for teaching 7-9th graders and also for teachers who are teaching somali students but are feeling disconnected from them and their traditions.a
