ver wondered how you could im-

rove your endurance and have lots

f FUN at the same time? Well,

ust ask Alina McDonald as she does

oth as a Carolina Homeschool Cou-ars (CHC) track member and a

SA Track & Field (USATF) pole

ault winner! Alina says, I practice

nd train several days a week, I

eight lift to help with my upper

ody strength and I eat pasta toet carbs, so I can have longer

asting energy. I have been running

rack and pole vaulting for 2

ears. As a track member for CHC

    lina often participates in competi-

ons within and out of the state.

n addition to the love she has forhe sport she also takes the time to

ncourage her peers about the ad-

antages of being a track member.

lina says, We give them the de-

ails and we tell them how much fune always have.

    My coach is going

to host a Halloween costume vau

in October. That is so much fun

because we get to wear a Hallow

costume and pole vault in it! If

that doesnt get you interested the sport, I dont know what wil

As with any sport you have to p

tice safety as an individual and

part of a team. Alina says, If

could enhance one thing about th

life of a track member, it would

probably be to make our bodies

more immune to injuries. I tore

of the 3 ligaments in my foot be

cause I slowed down and let go o

the pole after it picked me up.

luckily landed on the mat, but m

toes got caught while I was falliand my foot was pulled backward

    I couldnt run for 3 months. W

    Alinas evident enthusiasm and te

spirit Im sure the team was as

ger for her return as was she to

return to the sport she loves. If

    Student AchievementMeredith Till Equestrian

    StudentoftheMonth

    HighSchoolEdition

    eredith Till has been showcasing

    orses with the Interscholastic

    questrian Association for 2 years.

rior to that she showed in various

ombined training shows where par-cipants ride in 3 different disci-

    ines during the day: dressage,

    tadium jumping, and cross-country

mping. She also loves to go on

    ox Hunts. Meredith says,

Competing has taught me the value

    f preparation and perseverance and

    as also highlighted how important

    ood sportsmanship is. Working

osely with the horses I ride has

so helped me acquire skills in

    adership, teamwork, patience, and

cceptance. Through her experi-nces, Meredith has learned how to

ocus on her work and review her

rogress. Knowing you are going to

ompete sets a deadline of sorts

    or making progress. She explains

hat working with horses has made

her bolder and more patient. W

horses, you have to lead or you w

go places you dont want to go and

do things you would rather not do

She says that she is learning howto lead and compromise in order t

get the horse to respond favorab

    to her prompts. Recently Meredit

participated in a show in Kentucky

where she served in a support ca-

pacity for a trainer and some of

her clients. As an apprentice,Meredith is gaining valuable exper

ence that will help her in the fu-

    ture. She says, Working with

    professionals gives me the oppor-

tunity to learn about the many as

pects of showing, caring for thehorses, and working with clients a

other competitors at a show. Sh

    also experienced an unfortunate a

pect of horse shows regarding hor

    injuries. Horse athletes, just like

    human athletes, get injuries that

sideline them at some pretty incon-

    venient times. According to Mere-

    dith, The Interscholastic Equestrian

Association (IEA) is a great source

for teens to learn about and toparticipate in horse shows. The

    IEA website is www.rideiea.com.

She states that one does not have

to own a horse to compete, and

there are listings of teams on the

website. Some teams are schoolaffiliated and some are barn affili-

ated. It is a good way to meet

other young riders and get experi-

ence riding a lot of different hors-

es. Meredith has a passion for

caring for horses in addition to

showing them. She says, As partof my apprenticeship I feed, wash,

groom, ride, and just spend time

with them. Showing is a way to

gauge the progress I am making as

a rider and as a co-worker with the

    horse.

In order to improve her showing

    experiences, Meredith indicates

that she would like to be more pr

active in getting feedback from t

judges on her performances, andshe would like to have all of her

rides videotaped so she could wat

and critique them later. For aspir

ing horse show enthusiasts just g

    ting started Meredith advises, G

ready to work hard, get dirty, lo

    your animal, dont get discouraged

    relationships can be difficult, and

feel the freedom of the ride,

    StudentoftheMonth

    HighSchoolEdition

    ShaiKeira Young loves art and

strives to be a great artist. Art

    has been ShaiKeiras hobby since

she was six years old. She engages

n various forms of artwork, butmainly drawings and crafts. She re-

ally enjoys drawing cartoons and re-

al people, based not on how we see

them but how she interprets them

n her mind. ShaiKeiras says, My

artwork is based on what I feel, see and imagine. Expressing herself

    through her artwork is something

    ShaiKeira stated as well. She

said, The pros are that I get to

express my feelings to others, and

    my creativity. In other words,

artwork is more than just a hobbyto ShaiKeira. Its a way to express

herself and her imagination, and she

ikes it that way. ShaiKeira says

    she wouldnt change anything about

her work and that she would help

    other teens who desire

to be involved in art. She would

    this by giving compliments, encou

aging them, and trying to help th

out. ShaiKeira is very kind, so s

would help when given the oppor-tunity. She gave five tips for yo

artists just starting out. They a

    (1) If you draw something and yo

dont think it looks good, dont

throw it away because it might l

great to somebody else, (2) alwabe positive, (3) keep practicing b

    cause practice makes perfect, (4

never give up, and (5) when you

    frustrated take a deep breath.

you are an aspiring young artist,

    using ShaiKeiras tips. It might

just what you need to become asuccessful artist. ShaiKeira You

is definitely a talented young lad
