So, the logarithm (to base 10) of any number, is the power of ten needed to obtain that number.

This can be extended to other bases to give a general rule:

If

'log to base a of N = x'

Here, a is still called the base

So x is the power of a needed in order to get N

So logarithms are powers...Just like the rules for powers/indices, there are a set of rules for logs, that allow us to manipulate expressions algebraically.
