When used alone, RelyX Universal Resin Cement works as a self-adhesive resin cement with outstanding bond strength reliably solving routine cases with maximised efficiency. Scotchbond Universal Plus Adhesive is the first radiopaque, all-in-one universal adhesive. It serves as a universal primer for all materials including glass ceramics and further boosts bond strength of RelyX Universal Resin Cement for demanding adhesive resin cement cases. As a fully aligned system, the adhesive is initiated and cured by RelyX Universal Resin Cement thus saving the light-cure step.

The new universal resin cement comes in a game-changing 3M™ RelyX™ Universal Automix Syringe. Due to its proprietary self-sealing design, it can be cleaned easily and stored without the used Micro Mixing Tip for better hygiene. Being smaller than currently available standard automix systems, the ergonomic syringe delivers the usual number of applications with half the plastic waste. The unique mixing tip design is responsible for an 80 percent reduction of cement waste per application compared to the standard mixing tips.1

Other benefits of RelyX Universal Resin Cement relate to its innovative initiator system and filler architecture. Thanks to the initiator system, excess outflow can be easily removed after tack curing. Moreover, it ensures that a high bond strength is developed independent of the selected curing mode (self-cure or light-cure). The new fillers offer a radiopacity higher than that of enamel, which facilitates identification of the cement layer and possible excess material on X-rays.

As much as we try to ignore it dentistry is stressful! Sometimes it feels that you spend days, weeks if not months on end, juggling a backlog of patients from the COVID shutdown, unscheduled emergency patients, lack of trained staff and patients who are coming in with their own diagnosis and demands from Dr Google. Running a dental practice can be overwhelming for the whole team.1 3M research reveals that every fifth dentist feels burnt out at least once a week and more than half feel that way at least once a month.2 Another study reveals 84% of dentists have reported feelings of burnout3 and similarly 26% of dental auxiliaries have also suffered from burnout.4

According to research, spending as little as 20% of your working time performing tasks that you really enjoy might be enough to significantly reduce the risk of burn out.5

Data indicates that Standardisation may help increase the time spent on enjoyable tasks.2 Standardisation is defined as the development and implementation of clearly defined procedures or tasks for each member of the dental team.

What does standardisation look like? Perhaps it can begin with uncluttering your inventory. Do you really need all 48 shades of different types of composite? Can your 3 different adhesive systems be replaced with a universal that is appropriate for different applications?

Standardisation also ensures that each direct and indirect procedure is performed consistently and efficiently in order to achieve predictable outcomes. This could be in the form of technique cards for each procedure accessible to the whole team at the time of use. Where are those instructions for use kept if at all?

Standardisation may sound boring but in reality it can help improve the quality of the final outcomes, e.g. the fit of crown that you receive from your lab, thereby reducing how much time you spend on painful corrective procedures like crown adjustments or remakes.6 No matter how different or similar the favourite tasks of different dentists are, nobody really loves trouble shooting while the patient waits for their restoration!

Standardisation is most helpful for complex processes like prosthodontic workflows, which can be challenging due to the number of variables involved. A single crown includes a minimum of 60 steps and decision processes.7 Statistically speaking, each additional step increases the spread of expected results – and the risk of deviating from the desired outcome.

Avoid burnout by simplifying and standardising your daily workflow and concentrate on those tasks that give you the most pleasure.

It all started with a rock.

The heritage of 3M innovation spans over 100 years. It was not an easy start for the five entrepreneurs who founded their venture in June of 1902 in Minnesota, USA. They had discovered a mineral they believed was corundum, a substance almost as tough as diamonds and an ideal component in grinding wheels used by furniture makers at the time. Founders Henry Bryan, Hermon Cable, J. Danley Budd, John Dwan, and William McGonagle were banking on the success of this discovery.

Leaps of faith were common in those days. The company sold shares and made plans to start mining before they were even certain they had customers. Almost two years after 3M’s founding, the company sold its first batch of minerals – one ton of Crystal Bay “corundum” in March 1904.

But it wasn’t meant to be …

3M’s corundum product turned out to be anorthosite – a soft mineral, useless in abrasive products. As a result, there was little success raising operating capital. With an inferior mineral, no domestic source of raw materials, no ready cash, and no product, they could have logically admitted defeat. Instead, the company moved to Duluth in 1905 and it was decided to shift focus from being a supplier of raw product to become a manufacturer of their own abrasives. In 1914, after an attempt to manufacture and market sandpaper, 3M responded to competitors in the market by sourcing their own artificial mineral and innovating “Three-M-ite” cloth. It turned out to be 3M’s first profitable product. And the rest is history.

The discovery of those rocks back in 1902 created new opportunities and a culture of innovation that continues to be a driving force behind everything we do. We continue to nurture our passion and desire for discovery and being driven by science, as we work together towards a common goal of making the world a better place for everyone.
