• Solutions:• Hypotonic

> Solution outside of cell has a greater concentration of water molecules than the inside of cell (water moves into cell/cell swells, may burst)

• Hypertonic> Solution outside of cell has a lower 

concentration of water molecules than inside the cell (water moved out of cell/cell shrivels, dehydrates)

• Isotonic> Solution outside of cell has the same 

concentration of water molecules as the inside of the cell (water continually moves both in and out of cell to maintain equilibrium)

• If a freshwater fish is put in saltwater, what happens to its cells?

• If a saltwater fish is put into freshwater, what happens to its cells?

Water leaves fish’s cells, causes it to shrivel and dieit was put into a hypertonic solution 

Water enters fish’s cells, causes it to expand and explodeIt was put into a hypotonic solution

• Plant Cells• If a plant is put into a hypotonic (high water concentration)

solution, it’s vacuole (water storage organelle) swells and squishes other organelles• Cell wall prevents it from bursting• If a plant is put into a hypertonic solution (low water

concentration, higher solute), it’s vacuole will lose water and shrink, then collapse (wilted plant)

• Single Celled Organisms

• contractile vacuole­ functions as a bilge pump to force water out of the cell

Water moves into the cell and is stored in the vacuole.It then contracts when there is too much water.  The excess water is removed from the cell
