3 SAP Solution

3.1 Overview

The following SAP solutions are currently available in the market:

• SAP Business Suite. SAP Business Suite has been available for over a decade. It is the true successor of SAP R/3. SAP Business Suite is one logical system, mostly separated into several systems with their own databases. This business suite covers all required functions in an enterprise including purchasing, production, sales and marketing, as well as the logistics in between.

SAP Business Suite is based on a three-tier client/server architecture (SAP NetWeaver) and supported from several database vendors in the market (such as Oracle, IBM DB2, SAP ASE, Microsoft SQL and SAP HANA).

This business suite supports the operating systems: Linux (RedHat, SUSE), Windows, and some Unix derivatives (Solaris, HP-UX, AIX).

The NFLEX solution for SAP environments allows you to run your existing business suite applications and database servers (SAP databases only) efficiently in a virtualized environment.

• SAP HANA. SAP HANA is the SAP in-memory database including the possibility to build your own application on top (described later in this document ).

• S/4HANA and BW/4HANA. S/4HANA can be seen as the successor of the SAP Business Suite. As a database-only SAP HANA, in-memory database is supported. The same is true for the business warehouse solution BW/4HANA. Both solutions are supported by the NFLEX solution for SAP environments (described later in this document ).

• SAP Solution Manager. The SAP Solution Manager is the component from SAP that supports your application, test, problem, and incident management for all your SAP applications. It is based either on classical SAP NetWeaver architecture or on SAP HANA; therefore, it is also supported by the NFLEX solution for SAP environments.

SAP solutions are built to cover mission-critical processes in an enterprise. SAP solutions must provide

real time capabilities and serve thousands of users and very high transaction rates. The NFLEX solution

for SAP environments provides the necessary infrastructure in a very flexible and efficient and robust

way. The requirements from SAP solutions are extraordinarily high; therefore, the deployment details for

the NFLEX solution for SAP environments is described in the next section.

3.2 Details

The NFLEX solution for SAP environments is an optimized and standardized SAP environment delivering

a faster response time to growing business needs in terms of accelerated SAP projects and simplified

daily operations on a highly available infrastructure. It is an ideal foundation for hybrid IT and innovative

SAP architectures, such as the SAP in-memory platform SAP HANA.

The complementary service for NFLEX solution for SAP environments is the technology advisory services

for NFLEX for SAP environments. This service delivers fast provisioning of the solution and seamless

integration into the data center, reducing implementation risks. This standardization based on the NFLEX

converged infrastructure simplifies the daily operations of your SAP environment. The platform is flexible

and can be easily extended for future demands.

The Fujitsu Server PRIMERGY CX2560 M4 is listed in the SAP HANA hardware directory as a supported

Intel system with NFLEX for SAP environments; therefore, you can run any SAP application including

SAP HANA consolidated and converged. This configuration allows a common management of SAP

applications and SAP HANA databases on the same infrastructure platform1. The NFLEX M30 and M50

models support up to six HANA nodes with 384GB or 768GB of memory. The NFLEX M70 model

supports up to eight HANA nodes with 768GB or 1536GB of memory. The validation tests were based on

the SAP HANA Hardware Configuration Check Tool (HWCCT), the original SAP performance check tool

for SAP HANA.

4.5 VMware vSphere

VMware vSphere is a virtualization platform for holistically managing large collections of infrastructure

resources (such as CPUs, storage, and networking) as a seamless, versatile, and dynamic operating

environment. Unlike traditional operating systems that manage an individual machine, VMware vSphere

aggregates the infrastructure of an entire data center to create a single powerhouse with resources that

can be allocated quickly and dynamically to any application.

VMware vSphere provides revolutionary benefits for legacy applications through a practical, nondisruptive

evolutionary process. Existing applications can be deployed on VMware vSphere with no changes to the

application or the operating system on which they are running.

VMware vSphere provides a set of application services that enable applications to achieve unparalleled

levels of availability and scalability. VMware vSphere delivers the following core capabilities to meet

numerous application and enterprise demands:

• Availability. Workload mobility is provided through vMotion. HA provided by vSphere fault domain manager technology offers VM resiliency in the event of physical server or guest operating system failures. Fault tolerance enables VMs to instantly and nondisruptively fail over to another host in the event of a physical server failure.

• Automation. VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) offers dynamic workload distribution to align resource utilization with business priorities and compute capacity. DRS uses compute resources efficiently and thus lowers power consumption.

• Compute. The VMware vSphere ESXi hypervisor provides efficient memory, storage, and compute abstraction through the use of VMs.

• Network. VMware vSphere supports basic vSwitch functionality, as well as Distributed Virtual Switches and NSX software-defined networking.

• Storage. Thin provisioning allows overprovisioning of storage resources to improve storage utilization and improve capacity planning. VMFS is a clustered file system that grants multiple hosts simultaneous read and write access to a single volume located on a SCSI-based device through FC, FCoE, or iSCSI. VMFS-6 supports a maximum of 64 hosts connected to a single volume of up to 64TB in size. Hosts can also mount external storage using NFS, enabling data management capabilities that are not available with VMFS.

Figure 6 provides an overview of the capabilities of VMware vSphere.
