Perhaps more than any other high-technology sector, the
communications industry is experiencing unprecedented technological
evolution, fierce competition, and demands for service reliability. Many
companies compete for telephone, Internet, and entertainment
business, including the bundling of multiple services, add-on options,
and the rapidly changing wireless environment. The industry requires
powerful technology to sufficiently support the growing and changing
infrastructure. Utility companies also need to manage fiber for internal
communications and additional entertainment and communication
services for their customers. Fiber optic networks are expanding
exponentially because of the high demand for data services, both
residential and commercial, and the new backhaul of wireless
services from cell towers.

Tools for design, management, monitoring,
maintenance, and analysis of the facilities
allow you to rapidly make intelligent decisions.
Intergraph®’s automated solutions for managing the
geospatial communications network infrastructure
help communications companies address these
challenges. Adjunct technologies and applications,
such as field engineering, mobile workforce
management (MWFM), enterprise integration, and
management of non-communications assets,
complete the Intergraph offering for a truly
enterprisewide communications solution.
ChallengesThe ability to spatially inventory and manage all
network components is essential to companies
striving to stay competitive and vital. To achieve
these goals, organizations must successfully
address:
•Cost containment
• Integration of legacy and new systems
• Rapid design and deployment of the latest
technologies/services
•Business process improvement
•Customer retention
• Expansion into new service opportunities
and territories
A geospatial infrastructure management system
for communications can easily result in significant
record management labor cost savings of up to
50 percent, provide the opportunity to eliminate
redundant or duplicate processes, and refine
workflows that span multiple business units.
Better processes help you improve operating
efficiencies and customer service levels. Integration
with other corporate systems – such as customer
information systems, work management systems,
enterprise resource management systems, and
financial systems – results in further labor and
operating savings, as well as the ability to be
more responsive to customers, providing further
tangible cost justification and strategic benefits.
Key appliCations Communications Design and Asset Management Intergraph’s solution supports the planning,
engineering design, analysis, and maintenance
of the outside plant (OSP) facility network with
modeling for civil, fiber, copper, and equipment
components, and accommodates the connectivity of
the complete network from any terminating device to
the inside plant (ISP) termination. Going beyond
traditional geographic information systems (GIS),
Intergraph’s solution delivers an explicit connected
network model of the utility infrastructure you can
integrate with other corporate systems for true
enterprise data-sharing.
Intergraph facilitates key business processes,
such as work order design and execution,
mapping, asset records management, and
maintenance records of the entire system. As job
work requests come in for service provisioning,
network extensions, or other changes or maintenance,
engineers update the geospatial network model
with modifications. You can attribute network
facilities as desired, including the association of
compatible units. You can also validate all edits
using the customer’s business rules and generate
work prints, bill of materials, and cost estimates
to support the physical network changes.
Fiber Design and Asset ManagementWhile similar to traditional telecommunications
network management, this application focuses
on the management of fiber-specific assets,
adding new components such as passive optical
network (PON) devices that provide a variety
of FTTx (Fiber to the Home) configurations. It
also introduces process improvements through
integration with circuit provisioning systems for
mapping services and customers together on the
network. This application focuses on inventory
and connectivity of the complete fiber network.
Fiber management supports traditional fiber
transport, point-to-point networks, fiber rings,
and FTTx networks.
Field Automation For network repairs, modifications, and extensions,
Intergraph’s Field Automation capabilities allow you
to dispatch field crews with corresponding job
information. Field crews use these mobile tools
to trace networks and locate faults, validate the
physical network model to the digital network
model, capture inspection/status information about
field equipment, and capture redlines against the
digital network model representing as-built changes.
After a job is completed in the field, inspection/
status information or as-built redline data is returned
to the network engineer. The geospatial network
model updates any as-built changes and posts
the job to a master database. With advances in
communications and more compact and rugged
hardware, Intergraph’s mobile solution takes
enterprise information on a roundtrip, providing
one application in the truck that empowers your
field force with tools to manage any type of work,
to access real-time data in connected mode, and
to operate in disconnected mode with queued
updates when appropriate. Intergraph’s Field
Automation is uniquely designed to include MWFM,
providing field personnel with one solution in the
truck that manages field work and also enables
them to dispatch or reassign work and trouble crews.

Image ManagementImagery is often used during network maintenance
and field engineering operations to help understand
the location and characteristics of the physical
network. Intergraph supports your needs for
large volumes of imagery (high resolution, large
coverage, multiple-time snapshots) with a
high-performance image management and
retrieval system for improved productivity and
quick access to imagery.
Landbase ManagementIntergraph also provides landbase information
and management to better locate the physical
network. In addition, you can use the landbase
and parcels to integrate customer information,
plan additions and upgrades, and as a basis for
making observed changes in the field back to the
central database.
Enterprise DistributionIntergraph provides you with the tools you need
to ensure proper distribution of the most recent
information on the physical network and its
attributes. These include desktop viewing and
analysis tools linked to the central corporate
database, as well as Internet and intranet portals
that include dashboard and executive business
intelligence information.
extended appliCationsMobile Workforce ManagementIn addition to mobilizing access to critical business
applications while in the field, there is a growing
trend by organizations to integrate MWFM for
more effective field work. MWFM supports your
appointment scheduling and crew workload
scheduling and optimizes assignments to crews
to minimize your service costs. It provides you
with tools to create scheduled events and offers
standard interfaces for accepting customer
appointments from an external system, such
as the customer information system (CIS). The
software also ensures resources will be available
to meet scheduled appointments by returning
schedule conflicts and available appointment
times back to the CIS.
Our application combines interactive mapping with
dispatching and monitoring functions. The map
display interacts with the information entry display
so all available information received for service calls
is accessible and visible. This helps you dispatch
service orders effectively, monitor crews, and
control the operations of all service vehicles.
MWFM supports mobile devices for field
personnel and in vehicles. Technicians receive
work automatically and update the status of
work on their mobile data terminals (MDTs).
Two key features make the mobile solution
unique – mapping and configurability. Intergraph’s
MWFM product provides features such as street-
level routing, street and facility query, and even
“in-vehicle” navigation. The system is highly
configurable, eliminating the need for
custom programming.
