assigned each to go divergent paths. You have

been misunderstood when you gave us

individual attention.”

Hanshi: “ Those who ruled with fear envy and

regret will do anything to discredit you. So I

say, I,Hanshi Makgabenyana, PhD. MA. You

can tell them all. What you do I had long

written of 2001. Sui zen.”

Kyoshi: “ I have said that to them. They claim

that you have not written any of my current

drive into the 2nd Dimension.” Osu!

Hanshi: “You begin a new age and my

teachings will come to your help.”

Kyoshi: “ Your teachings are my sword. I have

and I have understood and embraced your

teachings and counsel. I remain indebted to

carry your vision going forward.” Osu!

Hanshi: “When crocodiles see maggot

become unhappy for the butterfly that is to

emerge. Please note many teachers and

prophets cried . .my voice is alone. I

experienced same for 46 years.”

With this statement I dropped a tear that early

morning hours. Sweetheart was deep asleep.

This dialogue deeply touched me.

Kyoshi: “I am your eyes and ears, the hand

that till the soil and sow seed of the next

generation Oikadoka. I take personal

responsibility and commit as you have tasked

me.” Osu!

Hanshi: “ Send this to all and sundry. I have

spoken. Osu!”

It is very rare that hanshi ends a discussion

with an” Osu”

10-12.3.2015 between 11pm-3am. It is

only now that I publish what I have long

been instructed to share with all and

sundry. I needed time to digest revelations

and announcements contained therein.

This dialogue followed several issues

arising from regular briefs that I, as senior

and president of Oikado I am mandated and

required to execute.

Kyoshi: “..we had agreed that dojo grade

kohai every three months upto Green belt

as a cost saving measure. As a guide. That

Oikado White to Shodan is a 30 months

course.”

‘ Dojo sensei are not submitting nor saying

why they fail to comply. Most argue that

they also have been instructed by hanshi on

these matters.”

“ My efforts and investment to take Oikado

to the next level not supported, in fact

sabotaged by silence and non compliance,

non attendance to gashuku and meetings.”

“ I have not been able to complete Oikado

2014 Annual Report due to failure by

project champions and regional chiefs to

submit reports..”

“ I am also getting tired,daddy, of

defending our Path given the attitude of

black belt cadre. I feel my word as Kyoshi

and president is not given respect and

support.”Osu!

“ It irks me when members from the 1986

to 1999 UB Karate School talk about you not

having spent a dime on us. Perhaps they do

not understand the standpoint you took in

growing,propagating and popularizing

Oikado from then up to present.”

“Their comments frustrates efforts for the

young adult that Oikado is to generate

income. Even membership, subscriptions,

grading and tournaments fees are not

enforced or communicated to their

students.”

Hanshi: “Good night! Please note that every

sms you send me I read it and note it. I do

not reply because you have a duty to prove

yourself to many of them. Do not forget that

your greatest enemy is those you were born

with.”

Kyoshi: “ Osu! I am aware. My messages

are to keep you abreast. Good nite.”

Hanshi: “ The fundamental point is here

never depend on the past to create the new.

Look at the past to create the difference. You

are to begin the new generation and it is

your task and do so.”

“ Identify those that hear you and leverage

on them. Build a new clan. Read Book 1 you

will see the point. They hate you because

you have reached the Soke-dai.”

It was this sms that put stop to posting this

dialogue.

“ Do not fight your enemies with weapons.

Fight them with time. Be strong and fluid.

Above all else be humble and patient.”

Kyoshi: “ They say each has a piece of

Oikado puzzle and no one but you can

dictate what to do with it. That you have

My Experience of The Martial Arts

It is no secret that Bruce Lee was one of the

greatest world renowned martial artists of

the twentieth century and by default his

philosophy shaped most of the practitioners

in the world and at home in Botswana. I

watched most of his movies as a young boy

of thirteen and not only enjoyed them but

dreamt that some day I would be a

respected karateka as Bruce. Since those

yeas, whilst at primary school, I started

enjoying Physical Education (PE) lessons.

I already had stamina from the daily 2 to 3

kilometer run that I had to undertake going

to school from home, carrying a log of wood

and a 5 liter bucket of water on one hand.

My books in a plastic bag on the other hand.

This clearly depicts where the fitness came

from. With all this around me, I started filling

sand into empty 12.5 kg maize meal bags to

serve as punching and kicking bags. I

believed I would be like Bruce Lee, or

perhaps like Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris and

the others, the dream of a teenager at the

time. I had no teacher or partner to practice

with.

I was lucky when I finished my primary

school and was admitted at Shashe River

School (SRS), there I found friends who also

shared my dreams of being great scholars of

martial arts. I was one of the founding

members of the school karate club together

with Sempai Tereki Moring, Ntwaagae

who moved with the speed of lightning

during kumite. He had the best techniques

of somersaulting!

As usual, when the club is young, you

always find the same faces day-in-day-out!

The so called "passenger" practitioners

would come when their bodies pleased or

when there was a trip to be undertaken to

another school or town and when you reach

the destination, they "get sick", avoiding

kumite! I braved on and was consistent with

my classes, Shukokai at the time! I was

beginning to realize that if you lose the spirit

of "repetition", your practice will become

quite difficult! Thus I had to have the right attitude to training for a martial artist's emphasis is

"strong confidence in our original nature".

Page 5: Solomzi 2015 July

Lameck Nthekela sensei

My Experience of The Martial Arts, continued

Our school like most did not entertain karate

tournaments as football was the darling of the

administration and at least a few other ball

games such as softball and volley ball. We had

no instructor, no equipment and everyone

wanted to be the leader. It didn't bother us much

as we were committed to our sporting code and

we volunteered and self sponsored our

activities. We had tournaments with various

secondary schools and occasionally Francistown

& Selibe Phikwe BDF Garrisons. Grading was a

rare occasion due to the unavailability of

instructors.

The turning point was in 1986 at the University of

Botswana (UB). Just like at secondary school,

karate was not given the priority by the

administration. I was fortunate to find committed

minds in the likes of Benjamin Kabo Masunga,

Ranko Boniface Motlalekgosi, Lekoko Kenosi,

Moses Kgosibodiba, John Moreti and others

whose names do not come to mind immediately.

These were dedicated men, unfortunately no

woman at the time, and through volunteerism

we contributed funds, fundraised and were able

to link up with other karate schools, Shotokan

and Shukokai. During this sojourn as students,

we were able to seek help in the masters of the

art from visiting instructors or teachers from

BDF headquarters and the likes of Sensei Nathan

Kgabi and Kyoshi Patrick Makgabenyana, my

greatest Sensei of all time. He never missed

training and most of all he exposed us to various

external, local and international, instructors and

we were happily graded! We learned how to

meditate as well as introduced us to the way of

the Oikado.

The freedom that Kyoshi Makgabenyana gave

us to explore our potential, creativity and

independence reflects that "the best way to

control your sheep or cow is to give HIM a

large, spacious meadow of land" and that

through transience, we should find perfect

existence through imperfect existence. This was

forever displayed during our inter campus

In 1987 the UB Oikado took a trip to the

University of Zimbabwe and we had a good

time of our life. It was a Five-a-side. Our

opponents undermined the stealth power that

we had in the tiny and short members of the

Oikado team. I was the only lepako, taller

than all my team mates; and the Zimbabwe

team was gifted in body and height. I must

say, in this tournament, skill and technique

was at the fore of our success.

The Tekki (Teno) katas and the magic

setkicks are something one can never take

away from us! Kabo Masunga was best at

throwing down his opponents and the break

falls by non other than myself scared these

massive giants. Each time I rolled on the

ground, I would catch my opponent off guard

with a combination, Ushiro and Gyaku Zuki,

thereby getting an ippon and wazare at the

same time.

I think they were match-watching whenever I

came spinning! We won the tournament with

a clean sheet. Unfortunately we had no

trophies to lift in those years save to be

declared the winners by word of mouth!

At the Universisty of Swaziland (Kwaluseni

Campus) in 1988 our team came First again.

Swaziland and Lesotho were second and third

respectively. At this tourney, I had now

mastered both my magic set of kicks and my

favorite kata, Kangaku, I loved leaping like a

lame duck or a Crane. My height advantage

also gave me the latitude to offer my

opponents the brunt of my inside step kicks

and my long fist! I also had a lethal round

house heel kick!

Sensei Motlalekgosi, the Ushiro man, played

the fool with his opponents throughout the

tournament and it was like clapping his

opponents with his feet.

Sensei Kabo Masunga as usual did his best

with his pounding straight punches and

sweeps that put most of his opponents down!

He had good foot work I must say.

John Moreti was an amazing fighter, with his

short heavy punches to his opponents chest

and his branded "two-feet" sweeping

I cannot overemphasize the contribution

that Lekoko Kenosi (he had a similar

style to John) and other members of the

team made and this was a bigger group.

Some of the team members' names have

now disappeared from this aging memo University of Zimbabwe returned their

match in 1989 and the venue was our

SRC Student hall, jam packed (ele

sethito le boitumelo!). With home crowd

and ground advantage the result was

going to be obvious. Our team had also

matured over the years and we were the

cream of the crop with various

youngsters having joined our team. The

presence of our Sensei, Makgabenyana

inspired us a lot. Much as we won this

tournament, I was a bit sad because I

was sent to the showers earlier for an

illegal round house heel kick that cut

through the lips of my second opponent.

I was meant to have three opponents

and I had performed very well, winning

my first fight. As I left the ring, I

remembered the words of Sensei

Makgabenyana that "over-excitement

and the heat of anger can ruin

performance!"

Now that I am gown up, I know that

temperance and constancy are my

guiding principles in life and as in the

teachings of survival Zen Meditation, in

the beginner's mind, there are many

possibilities, but in the expert's there

are a few! I know that people who know

the state of emptiness will always be

able to dissolve their problems by

constancy. Each day, I honor my

obligations to meditate and continue to

train and practice the Oikado way!

These are my remembrances and I

dedicate this award to the former UB

Karate School, Oikado members, active

and non active. Through your support

and presence you helped maintain my

martial arts flame. A flame I long lit in

my formative primary school days.

My respect and honor. Rei.

The OIKADO Martial Arts School is proud

to present its Grassroots Development

Program for 2010 – 2020. It is a result of

work by the OIKADO National Executive

Council and Technical Board and has

embraced all stakeholders of the school.

This third phase of the program is set in the

background of unprecedented unity and

drive demonstrated in the first phase (1995-

2000) and the second phase (2006-2010) to

take karate to the public. Recent

developments in Oikado Black Belts cadre

resolve is to speak and act in unity and also

paramount to deliver martial arts/karate

practice to the public in a coordinated and

structured way.

Crucial to the program was the appointment of a

strong and active National Technical Board headed

by Kyoshi Moses Topsoil Kgosibodiba, the President of the School, Shihan Gaabadzo Moseki,

Chairman Technical Board. Plus eight (8) active

black belts of instructorship status drawn across the breath and length of Botswana. The Grassroots

Development Program sits alongside and

across various areas of their development:

social, personal, educational, careers,

emotional, physical and spiritual dimensions.

The school aims to achieve these goals and in

2001-2005 & 2006-2014 we embarked on the

re-engineering exercise and increased the

number of instructors in order to expand the

program throughout the country.

The results have been dramatic, primarily

because enthusiasm for martial arts practice

and training does exist in local communities.

Martial arts/karate offers a genuine and safe

alternative and augments other performing

arts and sporting codes.

Its popularity is growing in leaps and bounds

at secondary schools, colleges and

university. It has attracted international

interest. Funds’ permitting our wish is to

cascade the program down to primary school

children, to rural communities near and

remote.

the re-engineering (1995-2005) and (2006-

2009) phases of the school.

The purpose of the program is to

demonstrate how martial arts/karate at

grassroots level will proceed from now and

where it will be by 2020.It underpins the

school’s application for funding from your

good institution.

It will also serve as a valuable tool for

monitoring and evaluating achievements

against milestones laid down. Vital to the

program success is the need to regularly

review and where appropriate make

adjustments.

The Grassroots Development Program

seeks to embrace and build the key

component required to achieve Youth

Development. At the core is the desire to

enable individuals to experience as

positive, fun and free atmosphere of martial

arts/karate practice and training and go on

to fulfill their true potential in the arts and

OIKADO Grassroots Development & Out-Reach Program: a summary

Page 11 S O L O M Z

Thank you for taking time to read and discuss

the Schools Karate Motivation Training

Program for Children and Young Teens.

Kyoshi Moses Kgosibodiba, a world class

karate trainer and instructor is now offering

Karate Motivation Training program to

children in Botswana and SADC member

countries.

The program beneficiaries are children and

teens at primary (5-12yrs), junior (13-15yrs),

and senior (16-21 yrs) schools.

The program teaches martial arts/karate,

motivation and discipline to students and

have resulted in students who are fit and

much disciplined.

As every teacher knows, the benefits of a

disciplined student are enormous as they

study well at school and at home. Do and

submit their homework on time and prepare

for tests and examination in time.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The program also teaches self-confidence

and will highlight the dangers of smoking,

drug abuse and alcohol.

We believe that fit and disciplined students

will benefit the students themselves, the

school system, teachers and parents and the

community and society in which they reside.

This program takes students away from

laziness, smoking, drinking and gets them

involved and motivated to become better

students. No other program offers such

benefits!

The program will be taught and presented

by Mr. Moses Kgosibodiba, who has over 35

years experience as a world class instructor.

By this submission we wish to roll out the

program to primary, junior and senior

secondary schools. Funds permitting it will

be our delight for every school to be

involved with us through this program.

Training and Advancement in Oikado is a

slow process founded on traditional

principles and stages canvassed herein.

These are synchronized with educational

systems, career development and personal

advancement. The drive is to go beyond the

limitations of techniques and that of the

style/system. To that end learning in Oikado

is not short term exercise. The phases of

development and advancement are strictly

observed when we pass our students into

h i g h e r

status of

rank.

Kirikami Phase – Black Belt 1st – 4th Dan.

One is required to practice with total

physical, mental and spiritual commitment.

taught. You are required to demonstrate a

scholarly attitude. Much assessment is placed

on compassion, attitude, humility, obedience,

self-sacrifice, and respect for human values,

life, family and loyalty.

Kyoshi Phase – at this stage one must

demonstrate requisites of a true disciple and

potential master. Once this has been

ascertained you are conferred title of

Kyoshi. It could be anytime from 5th – 9th Dan

Black Belt. At this level you have permission

to search for more knowledge of techniques,

theories independently and to innovate,

incorporate, adjust under honor of your

mentor and the school and that of your own.

It is through the above phases that one can

learn, train and develop for many years in

order to acquire the ultimate honor of master

hood. This requires extreme perseverance. You will need patience as it is a question of

time and rightful quest in The Way of Oikado.

Mokuruku Phase – introduction to the

intense study of theories, techniques,

strategies and weapons until the student

attains unquestionable depth and insight. At

this stage you must demonstrate confidence,

maturity, perfection and foresight. This

stage prepares you for master hood level.

Menko Kaiden Phase – introduction to new

strategies and techniques. One must

demonstrate abilities and apply techniques

and demonstrate interpretation, teach

others (mandatory requirement). One is

required to incorporate techniques, adjust

them and comment on innovations. You also

receive salient secrets and are expected to

maintain them throughout life. This stage

prepares you to master hood (Kyoshi).

Kigurai Phase – here much philosophy is

emphasized in addition to maintaining

standards of previous phases. Various

theories of techniques and warfare are

TRAINING AND ADVANCEMENT IN OIKADO

Phases of Development and Advancement: Black Belt Dan Levels

Page 15 S O L O M Z I

Training and advancement in Oikiru Ryu

Karate Jitsu Do (OIKADO) is a holistic

approach. It covers a wide range of teaching

methodologies from field of education and as

a system it has amalgamated a number of

martial arts styles and systems. To that end

an Oikadoka is required to read, research,

train in and practice across a wide variety of

styles and systems to their disposal. This is

mandatory because as you advance into the

ranks of Black Belt and higher Black Belt

levels one would be required to demonstrate

a diverse martial arts knowledge base.

Training in Oikado therefore encompasses

the following.

1.Educational System – in our teaching we

utilize advances in educational teaching

methods. This is particularly true in learner-

centered approaches and holistic issues. It is

therefore important that an Oikadoka is

conversant with teaching-learning concepts.

2.Career Development – advancement in

OIKADO is treated as a career development

program. In addition it takes into account

career progression both in the field of work

and in the martial arts halls. We are fully

aware that some of our practitioners are not

academically gifted. To that end training and

excelling in the arts should offer them a

window for both personal development and

career development opportunity as

instructors.

3.Personal Advancement – our training

encourages personal growth and

development. There is the great concept of

personal style and Oikado takes cognizance

of that.

4.Belt Rankings- in Oikado practitioners go

through several belt rankings and levels of

advancement. We need to realize that belts

are symbolical, inspirational and to some

indicate level of personal development.

5.In Oikado students’ aptitudinal

development and progression is

mandatory. To that end student development

and progression is closely assessed through

examination of your assimilation of physical

techniques(kihon), intellectual growth (as

would observed when you teach or write

articles, present papers in martial arts),

application(bunkai-odo), spiritual growth

and enlightenment.

Attainment of Black Belt 1st Dan in Oikado

Belt Rankings:

In Oikado practitioners go through

several belt rankings and levels of

advancement. We need to realize that

belts are symbolical, inspirational and

most importantly indicate level of

personal development and technical

g r o w t h a n d a d v a n c e m e n t .

Career Development : Advancement in OIKADO

is treated as a career development program. In

addition it takes into account career progression

both in the field of work and in the martial arts

halls. We are fully aware that some of our

practitioners are not academically gifted. To that

end training and excelling in the arts should offer

them a window for both personal development

and career development opportunity as
