In 1994, Solvay Fluor was the fi rst company world-wide to stop their
production and sales of CFC’s. New refrigerants with higher effi ciency and
environmentally friendly properties had to be developed and implemented
using a safe stewardship system right through to fi nal recycling.
Solvay’s fl uorine business has grown at a fast pace over recent years,
having doubled its size from 1995 until 2002, and more than doubling
that again since then. The refrigerant business has also grown during that
time, in such a way that Solvay Fluor can be considered today as one of
the leading manufacturers of fl uorinated refrigerants worldwide.
The Challenge
The Okorusu Fluorspar Mine in Namibia is our source for the raw material of Solkane® Refrigerants
Production of Solkane® Refrigerants in Bad Wimpfen, Germany
Refrigerants play a hidden, but vital role in people’s
lives. The cold chain is essential for feeding the
world’s population and this cold chain relies on high
performance refrigerants. Without refrigerants, today
people’s living standards would be considerably lower.
Comfortable temperatures in working and living
environments play an important part in sustaining the
quality of life.
The wide variation of applications and temperature
levels in refrigeration and air conditioning requires
a broad selection of specifi c refrigerants. Our
comprehensive Solkane® line of refrigerants provides a
solution for virtually every problem:

The ConceptSolvay’s fully integrated production concept for Solkane® refrigerants
ensures close control from mining of fl uorspar all the way to packaged
refrigerants – ready to be charged! But we don’t stop there: Our
unique recycling system generates useful raw materials from used
refrigerants. Responsible care is a management policy.
Choosing the right refrigerant and the right supplier goes far beyond
evaluating physical and environmental properties and specifi cations.
Refrigerants are “system components” and performance evaluation
must be directed at the system rather than its components – with
respect to:
Safety■ All Solkane® HFC refrigerants achieve the highest safety class in all globally
accepted standards for refrigerant and refrigeration safety.
■ They are non-fl ammable and very low in toxicity.
■ Because of their safety properties, Solkane® refrigerants have the least restrictions with respect to installation sites and charge sizes.
Ecology■ Environmental performance of refrigeration
and A/C systems is primarily dictated by energy effi ciency. Systems with Solkane® refrigerants achieve top ranks in this respect.
■ Solvay Fluor runs a thermal separation unit at its Frankfurt site, where used refrigerants (CFCs, HCFCs and HFCs), after careful recovery from the used refrigeration and A/C systems by skilled maintenance partners, are cracked into hydrofl uoric acid and hydrochloric acid: Both of which are raw materials that are used again for industrial production and completely converted into new products.
■ Solkane® HFC refrigerants have zero ODP.
EconomyUsing Solkane® refrigerants will save life cycle costs in various ways.
■ High energy effi ciency ensures low operating costs.
■ The high safety class saves substantially in respect to installation sites and safety related system auxiliaries.
■ Excellent material compatibility allows system designs with conventional and cost effective construction materials.

The ConclusionWhen refl ecting interactions of safety,
economical and environmental issues,
Solkane® refrigerants impressively dem-
onstrate their superiority. With their
non-ozone depleting properties, com-
bined with complete recycling, Solkane®
refrigerants contribute to Solvay Fluor’s
responsible care program.
