In Vavuniya………. Number of population is 171511 The collection, transportation, treatment and disposal
of municipal waste are normally administered by the local government in Vavuniya.
Waste from our homes is generally collected by our UC through regular waste collection twice a week
. about 87.6 tons of waste is collected daily collections for dumping without any separation. Market area waste is collected daily and sends off to
the compost making center Veppankulam area.
As a result solid waste is openly dumped in a Pampaimadu dumping site.
Open dumping and burning of domestic and industrial waste is a common phenomenon in Vavuniya
the open burning of waste leads to toxic releases to both ground water and air.
Stablization pond and dumpsite are present in Pumpaimadu.
Main Effects……..Green house gas emission.
Chances to spreading diseases .
Ground water can affect .
Forest degrading.
Bad odors.Particular matter.
REASONS FOR IMPROPER MANAGEMENT OF WASTE
Lack of planning for waste management while planning townships.
Lack of proper institutional set up for management, planning and designing in urban local bodies waste.
Lack of expertise and exposure to city waste management using modern techniques / best practices.
Lack of Management Information Systems
Lack of technically trained manpower
Lack of community involvement
