What is a Blue Ribbon?A Blue Ribbon is the highest award a school in the U. S. can receive. It is awarded by the Department of Education.

In order to apply for the award, a school’s students must score in the top 15% of the state’s test scores.

Schools that receive a Blue Ribbon are recognized for curriculum, co-curricular offerings, school culture, parent & community engagement, and the diversity of students served.

Only 1% of the nation’s 133K schools are recognized as current blue ribbon schools.

At Wheaton Academy, relationships and community matter. We want students to experience a community that helps them

know Jesus Christ more deeply and follow Him completely. Our students will know that they are loved through the relationships they have with their peers, as well as the relationships they have with their teachers, coaches, and staff. These Living Curriculum TeachersSM help students discover their gifts and use them fully.

At Wheaton Academy, excellence matters. Our classes and programs are designed so that students experience the highest quality instruction and coaching in outstanding facilities. Each student is empowered to become the best version of themselves through challenge, success, failure, and discipleship.

At Wheaton Academy, service also matters. Ultimately, we want students to leave fully convinced that life is not about them. We want them to passionately embrace a vision for our world that reflects God’s love of all people. We hope and pray that this lifestyle of kingdom restoration begins while students are at Wheaton Academy. In short, we launch students to go and live out God’s calling in their lives to redeem all parts of His creation.

We are so excited to begin this journey with you and to see God work in powerful ways in your student’s life during these crucial high school years.

Christ-Centered Biblical WorldviewOur worldview training is expansive. Every class, every club, every team, and every opportunity at Wheaton Academy help students identify and formulate their worldview.

Living Curriculum TeachersWheaton Academy teachers commit their lives to helping students build their worldview. Our teachers do not just talk about Biblical worldview; they practice it. All Wheaton Academy faculty and staff are born-again, growing followers of Christ. Biblical worldview flows seamlessly as teachers make connections between their subjects and the truth of God’s Word. They understand that modeling through relationships is essential for growth in Christian character.

Expectational CultureWe strongly believe that a student’s peer group is instrumental in spiritual formation. We cultivate an expectational culture at Wheaton Academy that encourages students to influence and lead each other. Students form lifelong relationships with their peers as they sharpen one another’s thinking and build a Kingdom Community at Wheaton Academy.

“The Wheaton Academy classroom is defined by leadership from the Living Curriculum Teacher. Our students are under the guidance of teachers who care deeply about their discipline, who care deeply about students, and most importantly, who love Jesus Christ.”

Brad Thornton Vice Principal of Instruction

Luke 6:40 tells us that students become like the teachers who train them . . . that’s why it’s so important that one hundred percent of our faculty and staff at Wheaton Academy are empowered to speak Biblical truth to every student and to model a life of commitment to Christ!

Page 8: SOLI DEO GLORIA - wheatonacademy.org

6

Our advisory program ensures that every student has a faculty or staff mentor, and it makes a space every week to deliver valuable content beyond a traditional classroom curriculum. In advisory groups, we provide academic guidance and advocacy along with support for college planning, and we build a culture of discipleship and leadership.

Spotlight: Steve WillemssenSteve Willemssen began teaching at Wheaton Academy in 2007. He is a graduate of Valparaiso University (BME) and Northwestern University (MM). He is passionate about seeing students grow in their musicianship and use their skills in service to others. Steve enjoys serving on the annual instrumental tour and Guatemala Winterim Trip. In an interview, Steve shared about his experience as a mentor at Wheaton Academy.

Q: What does it mean to mentor students at Wheaton Academy?

A: The phrase that comes to mind is “walk alongside.” Over the years, I have seen God grow students through structured mentoring groups and relationships—those are always a joy to be a part of. I have also seen God grow students through organic relationships. Making music together creates an especially unique relationship. I love seeing the ways that God uses the relationship between me and my students to help us both learn to love Him more. It is such a privilege for me to walk alongside my students for these four years. I hope that as I continue to walk with Christ, my walking alongside students helps them to walk with Christ too.

“At Wheaton Academy, I have grown exponentially in my faith, from a lukewarm Christian to a man who is actively pursuing God.”

“At Wheaton Academy, I’ve been immersed in a community of people who genuinely believe in Christ and act accordingly. It’s helped me to grow in my own faith when I’ve been surrounded by others who can defend their beliefs with solid reasoning and honest conviction. The combination of wise teachers, authentic friends, and intentional gathering through twice-weekly chapels has been absolutely formative for my faith, and it’s given me confidence as I go into college.”

Val Terdina Class of 2021

Val is a passionate musician who has found a way to be involved in most of the music ensemble opportunities at Wheaton Academy while still deeply pursuing her interests in science and math via the MASTER program. Our Bible CurriculumIn a world that is increasingly

filled with uncertainty, information, and change, building our faith on the bedrock of Scripture is so important.

foundations of faithFreshman year, we lay the foundation for our Bible curriculum. A full understanding of the Bible rests on a knowledge of the Old Testament and how it points to Jesus in the New Testament.

spiritual formationArmed with an understanding of the totality of Scripture, sophomore year focuses on the question, “How do believers grow in their faith?” Students learn the difference between justification and sanctification as they learn to practice spiritual disciplines.

life of Christ Junior year, we spend time working through the four Gospels so we can respond to the question Jesus posed to His disciples in Phillipi—“Who do people say that I am?” We believe that this question is the most important question a person will ever have to answer, so we spend a semester preparing students to answer for themselves.

doctrine and apologetics As seniors, our students study the fundamental beliefs of Christianity. Our goal is for students to know exactly what a person who lives a life committed to Scripture believes.

philosophy & other bible coursesStudents consider Christianity in comparison to other worldviews. Students consider how other religions see and interpret the world so that they can interact with other worldviews.

A sampling of Bible course work at Wheaton Academy… > Study, exegete, interpret, and apply a chosen

passage from the Sermon on the Mount

> Research and debate cultural and theological topics using Biblically supported arguments

> Take a spiritual gifts assessment and consider ways the Holy Spirit empowers students in daily life

> Study and write about the historicity and reliability of the Bible

> Memorize Scripture

S ince the program began in 1991, students have consistently pointed to Winterim as a definitive time in

their life when they were exposed to something that changed the course of their future. Lydia Rubenic ’15 is one of those students.

While Lydia was a junior and senior at Wheaton Academy, she was involved in many co-curricular activities: choir, orchestra, and theater. She even played the lead role in the Academy Theatre production of Mary Poppins! But it was an opportunity to travel to Guatemala and see the impact of medical missionaries that changed her life forever.

Lydia was so inspired by these trips that she decided to change her college plans and take on a double major, pursuing a pre-med degree.

In 2018, Lydia contacted the Independent Missionary Network (IMN), the ministry that Wheaton Academy works through in Guatemala, to arrange a trip for her to serve alongside the medical missionaries in Guatemala. This trip paved the way for Lydia to return to Guatemala with 30 of her undergraduate pre-med peers from Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Today, Lydia is living in Jocotenango, Guatemala, working as the Director of the IMN Apprenticeship program. She is traveling regionally as she works to create a culturally sensitive public health curriculum and to develop a gap year program for passionate students who desire to deploy to the mission field.

This opportunity all started with a seed planted in the heart of a high school junior during a Winterim trip, and it is still in the process of bearing fruit!

COLLEGE READINESSCurrent research trends show that students must be equipped with valuable skills that not only help them to navigate school, but also equip them to navigate life.

In our pursuit to ensure that our students are ready for their life calling, Wheaton Academy seeks to train and equip students in six primary areas: perseverance, social intelligence, self-control, gratitude, passion, and hope. We call these six traits our “College Readiness” skills. Not surprisingly, these values are also character traits advocated in Scripture.

PERSEVERANCEgrit, resilience, continuing toward goals in the face of struggles or difficulty—a better predictor of success than talent

SOCIAL INTELLIGENCEdiscern the norms for social situations & relationships—conduct yourself appropriately

SELF-CONTROLdelay gratification—motivated to accomplish tasks & have a way to do so

GRATITUDEpursue a lifestyle which recognizes & honors the blessings in life regardless of circumstances

PASSIONengagement rather than passivity & apathy—care about the problems that face our world & become a force for change

HOPEview failure not as a reflection of ability or personal worth; understand your true identity in Christ

I couldn’t ask for anything better than the spiritual education I’m receiving at Wheaton Academy. I’ve been going to Christian school my entire life and I’ve never really had a connection with the Bible, but now I relate it with what I do every single day. It changes how I talk to people, how I think, and what I do.

I live an hour away—so the drive is a sacrifice in itself—but I would make this drive every single day for the rest of my life because I am so happy here.

“Growing up, my personal relationship with Jesus was never as strong as my intellectual understanding of Him. At Wheaton Academy, that has begun to change. I have grown closer to Jesus because of friends and teachers who challenge me to live a life in accordance with God’s will.”

What Parents Have to Say

In August, my husband and I were wrestling with and praying about what the best place for Emma would be. When we came to the parent night for incoming freshmen, the principal stood and said—“Here we are. We’ve been praying for your student since this time last year” —and I don’t think I breathed for three minutes. While Emma’s dad and I had been praying about school options, little did we know that the faculty and staff at Wheaton Academy were praying for Emma before they even knew her. In that moment, I knew this was not only a very special place, but that this was the exact right place for Emma.

Tina Parent of Emma ‘23

As a graduate of Wheaton Academy myself, as well as a mother of two alumna and two current students, I am so grateful for this school. It is a place that transforms lives. Students are known, loved, and yet challenged to grow through their classes, areas of involvement, and relationships with teachers and peers. My children learn what it means to be a follower of Christ each day in the hallways, and the biblical foundation we establish at home is reinforced at school. That alone is invaluable to my family.

Laura ’86 Parent of Elizabeth ’18, Britta ’20, Sara ’22, & Sam ’25

“Relationships were the key to my development as a student at the Academy. Whether inside or outside of the classroom, teachers and other adults were passionately invested in my growth and success. They were approachable and available. They mentored and they modeled. They encouraged me to use my gifts and talents for the glory of God. I am thankful for this deposit, and I know that these relationships are available for a lifetime, not just during my high school years.”
