After many months of much-needed rain and cool weather, Summer has officially arrived. We can now plan to enjoy time with family and friends around the BBQ’s at home and, additionally, the amenities that we have in Solera.

Summer is also the time to launch into projects around the home. Take a look around and see if there is painting that needs to be done or does the landscaping need attention. With the new house and trim paint schemes now available many residents have been adding a personal touch to their properties. If you do plan to make changes to your exterior paint or landscaping, please keep in mind that before you start that you will need to get approval from the Design Review Committee (DRC). It is a simple and easy procedure that could save you time and possible cost if it does not meet the architectural standards specified in our Governing Documents. If you are unsure whether you need DRC approval, please contact Sam Rojas in the Solera office and he will provide you with an answer

Now I would like to regress slightly and provide a bit of Solera history. Solera by Del Webb started life in 2003 and since its inception many new Members have been welcomed into the Community. Over the years Members have proposed suggestions to the then-seated Board of Directors relative to amenities that they would like to see in the Community. Many of these suggestions are now being posted again by more recent Members not familiar with our past history. I thought it would be of interest to Members to list several suggestions by Members that have been addressed over the years by Boards. The suggestions listed below were all considered and thoroughly researched by the Boards, as well as by Board-appointed Ad Hoc Committees as to their viability. By no means is this intended to be a comprehensive list. However, it does provide insight relative to some of the more significant suggestions that have been addressed but could not be implemented as a result of space restrictions, rejection and/or restrictions by outside agencies such as the U.S. Postal Service or Edison, or simply due to cost:

PATRICIA AND JEFF SHEARER

There are those of us who live and then there are those who LIVE LOUD! Jeff and Pat are two of those people. They are a fearless, high energy couple with dangerous careers and arduous hobbies.

Pat was born in California and raised in Rubidoux. Jeff hails from Buffalo, N.Y. and moved to California in 1988. They met when their paths crossed while she was hiking and he was bicycling. They've been married twenty years and they have four children between them and one grandchild.

After graduating from College Pat applied and was hired by the California Highway Patrol. Over the next 27 years, she rose through the ranks and retired a Captain in 2009. Some of the highlights of her career were being assigned to Protective Services and working with the secret service protecting VIPs. She also worked on the Mobil Field Force, being deployed to civil unrest incidents and rescue and recovery operations such as being deployed to Louisiana during hurricane Katrina.

Jeff, over his career life, was in mechanical maintenance, which included plumbing, welding and repair of pumps, etc. Following that, he became a commercial diver and worked for the Metropolitan Water District for twenty years, doing maintenance, inspections and repairs of pipelines, reservoirs, aqueducts, and water treatment facilities. Pat says he's a genius at repairing, fixing and creating anything. He should keep that quiet if he doesn't want to be inundated with widows and unhandy men wanting his services.

Their combined hobbies include cycling, hiking, back backing, golf, scuba diving, paragliding and hang gliding, plus Jeff is part of the model train club. Once they took the whole family sky diving and they have dove all over the world. Pat is also an avid reader, and looks for used book shops during their travels.

Pat says she's done a lot of things in her life but is mediocre in all of them. Is she a Jack of all sports and master of none? I don’t think so. Ironically, she’s walking around today with a sling on a broken shoulder after falling off her bike in Solera of all places.

Aside from all the sports Patricia does a lot of volunteering. She's a driver for Seniors in Loma Linda, does taxes during the season for seniors, and has volunteered and supports programs in other countries. She has climbed Mt. Whitney, Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, bicycled the Natchez Trail, a 444-mile parkway through Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. Hiked the mountains of the Caucasus which is situated between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, in the Republic of Georgia. Hiked in Switzerland. Cycled in Italy. Last year she traveled to Cuba, and Granada.

Jeff's passion is paragliding and hang-gliding. He Scuba dives, only because Patricia insists. He jokes he doesn't care much for water. He is the past president of the hang-gliding club in San Bernardino. He has flown in Switzerland and once, while paragliding, his paraglider collapsed, but he was able to deploy his reserve parachute which saved him and he safely hiked out of the canyon he fell into.

You’d think their bucket list is probably done. Nope, not yet. They’re planning another bicycling trip to Ohio, where they will ride a 326 mile trip on the Ohio Bike trail.

Jeff and Patricia moved to Solera two years ago and enjoy the quiet, the security and the people. They appreciate the amenities that support their lifestyle. Our pool, great gym, local hiking trails, and Solera clubs keep them busy and fit.

This dynamic duo feel blessed because of their children, their health, their new found friends in Solera, careers they loved, and the adventures they’ve had.

bInGoHope everyone has a safe and Happy 4th of July celebrating our country. It should be a fun day here at Solera with the annual 4th of July pancake breakfast and the decorated golf cart parade. We hope everyone will come out and join in the fun

on the 4th and come later in the month to enjoy a night of Bingo.Due to the 4th of July Holiday falling on a Bingo night, THERE WILL BE NO BINGO ON THE 4TH OF JULY.

The Bingo Social Club welcomes everyone the first and third Thursdays of each month for a fun evening of socializing and playing Bingo games. Gift cards are given as prizes. Tickets to attend each event are $15.00 per person and must be purchased in advance. NO TICKETS ARE SOLD AT THE DOOR. Tickets may be purchased Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00 pm at the front desk in the clubhouse. The only exception is the day of the event, tickets sales stops at 4:00pm. When purchasing your tickets, you may either write a check- made out to Bingo Social Club- or pay by cash. If paying by cash, please be sure to have correct change as the front desk does not have money on hand to make change.

The July event will be held July 11 and July 18. The doors open at 5:00pm and the event begins at 6:00pm. Free cookies, coffee and tea are served, and popcorn, sodas and water are for sale. All Solera residents and their house guests are invited to attend.

As you get deeper into your family history, you will begin to see people with just one name or they will have a single name and a ‘de’, ‘di’, ‘du’, ‘von’, or a ‘van’ before what we would consider a last name. In reality the last name is usually a place name. This

can be the town, city, or area in which that person was born. This was a common situation back in the 11th

through the 14th centuries. These generally translate to ‘of’ for the ‘de’, ‘di’, and ‘du’s and ‘from’ for the ‘von’ and ‘van’s. It is also a clue as to generally where the last name is located. The ‘de’s are usually French or Spanish, the ‘di’ Italian, the ‘du’, French and the ‘von; and ‘van’ mean from in German and Dutch respectively. It should be noted that various genealogy data bases will sometimes drop the ‘de’ and ‘di’, etc. so only the place (last name) is shown. This is how many people wound up with their last names. This is especially true for people who were part of the aristocracy of the time. Another way people got last names was because of their occupation. Cooper, Carter, Leather, etc. were examples of trades that became peoples last names. All of these clues associated with last names can help you learn more about your ancestors and the who, what and where of their lives. If you get stuck or need help, come to our meetings and we can

fill you in on various sources and data bases to aid you in your research. The Ancestry Group Meets at 1:00 p.m. on the 4th Friday of the month at the Clubhouse. We are there to help you build your tree so you can learn the history of your family.

bon appetIt CooKInG CLubGreetings from your Bon Appetit Board On June 7 we had a 50’s Golden Oldies Ice Cream Social. Several Folks dressed in outfit from “The Good Old Days”. We had

a fun oldies trivia game, and a Photo Guessing Contest where 31 members provided their photos from the 50s and 60s.

July 5 we are hosting a fun meeting with a Picnic style Pot Luck. We need everyone who is interested to sign up with Barbara Skaret to bring either a main dish, side dish, salad or dessert. The outdoor patio will be set up with fun Carnival style games. We will be selling opportunity tickets for various prizes.

We are always looking for donations for our monthly raffle prize baskets. If you have any baskets and/or unused items you think would be nice for our raffle, please contact Marie Magdaleno or Vallarie Clegg, and they will pick the items up from you.

Also, volunteers to help set up and/or clean up at our meetings are really appreciated. Sign up sheets for volunteers are on the raffle table at every meeting.

Stay tuned for news about whether or not we will be having meetings in August and September due to the planned remodeling of the Oakmont Rooms.

CarD art 101Boy oh boy, we are sure into the summer heat! If you looking to get out of the house and have sure fun and fellowship then this is the craft class for

you. We are always looking for new people to add to our fun group! And, you won’t be disappointed.

This month we are making cards from scraps. That means I will bring all the supplies, but you will have to do some paper punching (with my punches) or cutting. As always these cards could be birthday, friendship, thank you, anniversary, or anything else you desire. I will have all the stamps to make your cards your own! I do all the designing and will bring samples of the cards you could make. On class day, I will give you step by step directions for each card and you could make as many as you can

The Solera Paper-Crafters Meet on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Thursday of the month. We meet in the Arts and Crafts Room at 1:00 pm.

This month we will be making greeting cards on July 11 and the 25. On July 18, we will be making 3-D projects. I will have samples to show you what will be making on the 11th. If your birthday is in July, the class on the 11th is free!!!

Hope that you can attend all three days. If you are new to card-making, all you need to begin with is a pair of scissors. I will have glue and tape available for you if you need it. You will be making 3 greeting cards for $8.00, which covers the cost of my supplies. So come on in and make some handmade greeting cards to send to friends and family. QuILtersOur group meets each Monday at 12:00 in the Arts and Crafts Room.

We welcome new residents who are quilters to join us. We have a friendly, helpful group of

gals who have fun and create some lovely items.

We welcomed two new members to our group. Linda Brown and Earlie McCallum are fun ladies and we are happy to include them.

Several of our gals took short trips around the USA and visited new quilt shops and shared their findings with us.

Our “Blitz” was a success and all the “four patch posies” squares were on display. Penny Wyckoff is a great teacher and introduced us to this new technique.

Pat Ritter gave us a demonstration of cutting star squares on a “GO”machine. There is always something new to learn from these talented ladies.

rV CLubNow that the hot summer days are upon us, kids are out of school and campgrounds are busier than ever, we are not taking any group trips this month. Although a few of our members are venturing out on the road,

most of us are enjoying the wonderful lifestyle and amenities offered at Solera. The next meeting will be held at 1:00pm on July 11 in the Clubhouse. The voting results are not in as of this writing, but we decided to be “ahead of the curve” in case the clubhouse work was approved. Had we not done this, we risked the possibility of not having

Club NewsSipper events this year. The planned months the clubhouse may be unavailable are August, September and (probably) October. To this end, we moved some events around in preparation of this possible closure. Our Blind Wine event has been moved forward from September to July. This is the next event we’ll have to take advantage of still being able to use the clubhouse.

For June, we pulled forward an event from August. It was a simple Happy Hour with a trivia contest thrown in. Much fun and fellowship ensued and music was provided by our own George Vawter. The event was cost free to members, with a potluck of finger foods to enjoy.

As always, flyers for our current event can be found in the two display cases at the clubhouse. Additionally, I send out regular emails with important info and flyers about our next event. Membership is required if you are a Solera resident.

fLaG brIGaDeThe flags were raised June 6 for D Day and June 14 for Flag Day. Thank you to those few dedicated resident volunteers who are up “at the crack of dawn” on these special holidays to put up and take down our flags.

The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. Following are a few items in a series of instructions that will be posted for the next few months.

Displaying the Flag Outdoors

• When the flag is displayed from a staff projecting from a window, balcony, or a building, the union should be at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half staff.

• When it is displayed from the same flagpole with another flag - of a state, community, society or Scout unit - the flag of the United States must always be at the top except that the church pennant may be flown above the flag during church services for Navy personnel when conducted by a Naval chaplain on a ship at sea.

• When the flag is displayed over a street, it should be hung vertically, with the union to the north or east. If the flag is suspended over a sidewalk, the flag's union should be farthest from the building.

• When flown with flags of states, communities, or societies on separate flag poles which are of the same height and in a straight line, the flag of the United States is always placed in the position of honor - to its own right.

..The other flags may be smaller but none may be larger. ..No other flag ever should be placed above it. ..The flag of the United States is always the first flag raised

and the last to be lowered.• When flown with the national banner of other countries,

each flag must be displayed from a separate pole of the same height. Each flag should be the same size. They should be raised and lowered simultaneously. The flag of one nation may not be displayed above that of another nation.

Thanks to all who participated in the Memorial Tournament. Sixty eight golfers participated in the tournament. We had significant participation from former and nonmembers who came out and honored the memory of Peter Kim and previouslydeceased SGC members.

The club “hit the road” on June 20/21 for two rounds of golf at the Mt. Woodson Golf Club in Ramona with an over night stay at the San Vicente resort. Thanks to Match Play Champ and board Vice President Tim Stirens for organizing this always well attended event.

In honor of Independence day, the club tournament directors Merele Chapman and Dave Duncanson scheduled a “Red, White and Blue” tournament on July 2, 2019. For the uninitiated, this means players negotiate the course in six hole increments fromthree different sets of teeing areas.

We continue to welcome new members. Tom Hirsch being the most recent to join us. All Solera residents are welcome. If you enjoy golf or need a reason to get out of the house on Tuesday mornings, please come join us. Check in is at 6:30 a.m. at Tukwet Canyon Golf Club.

Watch The BallAccording to an article by Damien LaFont published in the ¬ITF Coaching and Sport Science Review, December 2007, the whole idea is to achieve control of your gaze and head movement during the hitting phase. Thus “Watch the Ball” is heard over and over

when someone is receiving instruction or inside their own head when they are playing.When analyzing and looking at videos of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, it is apparent that they not only keep their eye on the ball up to the moment of impact, but also after impact their head remains still and in the direction of the contact zone. Steffi Graf kept her “fixation” on the ball even longer than these two gentlemen.

This “fixation” of the contact zone is the trademark of elite players. If this works for these elite players, maybe we should all try it! Consistency, however, is the most crucial element of striking the ball. That’s why we play, practice, and strategize. And of course, we all want to win!

The most difficult part of tennis is deciding tactically and correctly WHAT and HOW you are going to play in less than half a second on every shot you play.

A tennis player has to decide approximately 200 to 300 times, in a 6:4 set, what and how he is going to play, and make those decisions in half a second!

Ultimately, this will all go better if you “Watch the Ball!”

May was our 1st year anniversary of Pickleball play here in Solera and it was a very wet month. Although the May weather on the whole was not

good we did manage to find a few days where we could play out doors. The group photo shown here was

one of those days we all came out to play. The rain didn’t stop our playing time altogether. Many players from Solera, Sun Lakes and Highland Springs went to play indoors at the Albert Chatigny Community Center on those wet cold days, it was nice getting to know other players and playing with them. We still welcome any newcomers to join us Mon/Wed as noted in the Gazette activities. Someone will take the time to give you instructions on how the game is played and insight on the game rules, hope to see more of you come out and get some real fun exercise.

By: Jesse DonardtOur care package project is going strong, from my garage operation headquarters. I miss not being on the cool waters of the lake in Idaho, but it was nice not having to transport all the items north and re-setting up operations there. If you have never seen our operations in my garage, do stop by. As usual, we are sending packages to service men and women all over the world. Some locations, just off the top of my head are, Cuba, ships at sea, multiple countries in the Middle East, Poland, and Central Africa. Because we support so many in different locations and living under different conditions, what we send can vary greatly. Some have no way to cook or heat items, so snacks and hygiene items are for them. If they have microwaves, you can add things like noodle bowls and canned items such as ravioli, etc. Our African outfits can use all of the above, plus anything that can be cooked on large gas burners. They do their own cooking, so just about anything, canned or packaged that you can cook on top of a stove works. If in doubt, any kind of snacks, packaged or canned works for them all.

We have averaged mailing about six packages a week, every week for thirteen years. Postage cost is always an issue. Most long-time residents will recall the fund raisers we have held, usually a couple of times a year. We have had Chili Cook Offs, large pot luck type dinners, called Taste Of Solera, Pool Parties, Musical Events, and Garage Sales to name a few. We will likely have a Karaoke Event this fall, but if anyone can think of another fund raiser, it would be a Godsend. Many of our past fund raisers are just too labor intensive for our ever aging supporters. Finding someone to organize and run a fund raiser is next to impossible. If anyone has any ideas, lets talk. As you know, home buyers are always advised to obtain a professional home inspection during the escrow process. The home inspection will point out items that may require repair or upgrade to comply with current standards.

After the home inspection is completed the buyer and the buyer’s agent will discuss which items from the home inspection the buyer wants the seller to address. Typically, not all home inspection items are addressed since some items will be the result of normal usage. In turn, the seller is not obligated to address all of the items requested by the buyer.

When the buyer and the seller have agreed upon which items will be addressed the repairs may be handled in any of the following ways:

1. Seller handles repairs during the escrow period so that repairs are completed before the close of escrow.

2. Seller agrees to allow the buyer an agreed upon amount of money at escrow closing and the buyer handles the repairs.

3. If it isn’t possible to accomplish all of the repairs during the escrow period the escrow company may hold back a portion of the seller’s proceeds until the repairs have been completed.

Again, a home inspection is a crucial part of any home purchase. Be sure to review the home inspection carefully.

We have numerous homeowners applying to do Home Improvement Projects, however, it seems owners have forgotten portions of the Home Improvement Process! After submission, homeowners need to pick-up approval paperwork from the office, as well as, turn in a completion permit to the office once the work is completed. We have reached out to numerous owners in an effort to get these approvals picked up, with no response. The Ad min Staff is once again reaching out to homeowners in an effort to get these approvals out, and projects that are completed closed! Please review the Design Guidelines in order to refresh yourselves with the Home Improvement Process, and the responsibility of each homeowner when doing improvement projects!

CertThe Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, which allows them to focus on more complex tasks. Through CERT, the capabilities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters is built and enhanced.

The CERT concept was developed and implemented by the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985. The Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987 underscored the area-wide threat of a major disaster in California. Further, it confirmed the need for training civilians to meet their immediate needs. Since 1993, this training has been made available nationally by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA).

Being a CERT member does not mean you have to be available for deployment to emergencies outside your immediate area. The plan for Solera residents that are CERT trained is for them to respond to their own neighborhood when needed, but only after they and their family are safe.

The Riverside County Emergency Management Department oversees the CERT program for the County. They have recently increased their focus on the program and are adding more training sessions to their calendar. They also have made more resources available to the communities in the county. This is a good thing for Solera. The more volunteers we have trained and prepared to respond to an emergency, the better off we will be during and after the event.

Remember- When there is a major event, the First Responders will have their hands full responding to areas of higher priority than Solera. We might not see any for an extended period of time. In other words –

WE WILL BE ON OUR OWN!

As a result of the focus on CERT, some residents have recently taken the CERT training and become certified. Congratulations to Greg DiGiovanni, Bob Rose, and Jack Clark. We know that

there are many other residents that have previously been trained and certified, but are not currently active.

We would like to extend an invitation to all CERT members, and anyone else interested, to attend a meeting to discuss how to organize, as an independent group, to respond effectively to any event that affects Solera.

We WeLCome neW resIDentsTwice a year the New Resident Welcome Advisory Committee presents a “Social Gathering” for new residents during the previ-ous six months. However, all residents of Solera Oak Valley Greens are invited. We hosted our last “Social Gathering” on May 1, 2019. It was very well attended by new residents, who also stayed for the presentation “Living in a HOA” given by Pat King. Lots of questions and good interaction between those who attended. We, also, invited a representative from each of our clubs/groups to attend and meet with the guests. Our next “Social Gathering” will be Wednesday, October 30, 2019. If you have not attended one of our events before, please mark your cal-endar to join us. The event begins at 6:00pm and ends at 7:30pm.

If you are a new resident from January 2018 through May 31, 2019 and did not request a visit from a Welcome Ambassador, and you have not received a Welcome book, it is not too late. Simply visit the office and tell Janet you would like to request a visit from the Welcome Committee and receive a Welcome book. She will have you sign a request slip and you will receive a call from a Welcome Ambassador by the end of the following month. NOTE: those who requested a visit during April 2019 should re-ceive a call shortly.
