deacon’s corner Conversations at Table

The Thread Of Life Who is in control? Deacon Chuck Lanham

C lotho, the youngest of the Three Fates in ancient Greek mythology, was

responsible for spinning the thread of human life which included deciding when and who was born and when and who would die, thus controlling people’s lives.

Returning from a brief sojourn to our discussion of what C. S. Lewis was attempting

to elucidate in The Abolition of Man we hear him expand upon what he believed to be the inevitable outcome of man’s resolute pursuit of the conquest of nature. Lewis understood where man’s desire for mastery over nature would ultimately lead: the control of the many by the few. Albert Einstein said as much when he wrote:

“Let every man be respected as an individual and no man idolized…I am quite aware that it is necessary for the success of any complex undertaking that one man should do the thinking and directing and in general bear the responsibility. But the led must not be compelled; they must be able to choose their leader. An autocratic system of coercion, in my opinion soon degenerates. For force always attract men of low morality, and I believe it to be an invariable rule that tyrants of genius are succeeded by scoundrels.”

Lewis went even further, writing:

“Man’s conquest of Nature, if the dreams of some scientific planners are realized, means the rule of a few hundreds of men over billions upon billions of men. There neither is nor can be any simple increase of power on Man’s side. Each new power won by man is a power over man as well. Each advance leaves him weaker as well as stronger…

I am not yet considering whether the total result of such ambivalent victories is a good thing or a bad. I am only making clear what Man’s conquest of Nature really means and especially that final stage in the conquest, which, perhaps, is not far off. The final stage is come when Man by eugenics, by pre-natal conditioning, and by an education and propaganda based on a perfect applied psychology, has obtained full control over himself. Human nature will be the last part of Nature to surrender to man. The battle will then be won. We shall have ‘taken the thread of life out of the hands of Clotho’ and be henceforth free to make our species whatever we wish it to be. The battle will indeed be won. But who, precisely, will have won it?

For the power of Man to make himself what he pleases means, as we have seen, the power of some men to make other men what they please…

We reduce things to mere Nature in order that we may ‘conquer’ them. We are always conquering Nature, because ‘Nature’ is the name for what we have, to some extent, conquered. The price of conquest is to treat a thing as mere Nature. Every conquest over Nature increases her domain. The stars do not become Nature till we can weigh and measure them; the soul does not become Nature till we can psychoanalyze her.”

Lewis completes his objection through forceful argument which we will cover next

week (unless of course before then you find yourself reading The Abolition of Man.) 1 Michael Green, Quantum Physics and Ultimate Reality: Mystical Writings of Great Physicists, Random Press, October 18, 2015, (Also under the title: The Road to Ultimate Reality.)

ly. It can seriously affect health and well-being.

Centering Prayer An Introduction to Contemplative Practice

St. Albert’s Centering Prayer group, led by JoAnn and Chuck Baird, is on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the chapel.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CC), § 2653, says:

The Church ‘forcefully and specially exhorts all the Christian faithful…to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ’ (Phil 3:8) by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures…Let them remember, however, that prayer should accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture, so that a dialogue takes place be-tween God and man. For ‘we speak to him when we pray; we listen to him when we read the divine oracles.’

Centering Prayer is a spiritual custom based upon the Word of God, Lectio Divina. We strive to increase the time we spend alone with God to 15-20 minutes twice a day. The purpose of our gathering is to encourage one another each month in this sacred, individual practice, in the words of CC, § 2560, in “the encounter of God’s thirst with ours.”

All members of the Centering Prayer group invite you to join them in the joy of this spiritual discipline.

All are invited and encouraged to attend the Closing Mass

for the Second Synod of the Diocese of Reno

Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Pentecost Sunday

May 15, 2016 at St. Rose of Lima

Bishop Calvo will officially sign the final Synod documents to close the Second Synod of the Diocese of Reno.

2016 Catholic Service Appeal Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

At the beginning of (December), we held the Second Synod of the Diocese of Reno, a special gathering of nearly three hundred people, representatives from our parishes, religious, priests and deacons. The question before the Synod was: Where is the Holy Spirit leading us as a Church in northern Nevada? The answers recommended by the Synod form the outline of a master plan for the diocese for the coming years.

What rang out clearly in the Synod was the need to increase and improve many of the services parishes and the diocese provide. Some of these are education of youth and their Christian formation; ongoing formation in the faith for all Catholics at every stage in life; and services to meet the ethnic and cultural diversity of our diocese. These are areas of ministry that Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) already funds. But there is much more to do as is clear from the Synod.

The CSA funds a wide range of ministries and is the means by which we can accomplish more of the goals set forth by the Synod.

Pope Francis has designated 2016 as a special Jubilee Year of Mercy for the Church throughout the world. It is a time to deepen our faith in God’s mercy and to live out Christ’s call for us to be “merciful as God the Father is merciful”. We will have events in our diocese to help mark this Jubilee Year which have been announced elsewhere. One of the ways we do carry out works of mercy is through our Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. The CSA provides financial support to Catholic Charities to assist in many services it provides to those in need.

I write to invite you to participate in the CSA campaign. As you can see, there is much we need to do and so many services to provide people in various stages and situations of life. Your contribution is needed. And it will be much appreciated.

I pray this Jubilee Year of Mercy will be filled with grace for you. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of my request. May God bless you.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo

Bishop of Reno
