LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING

A 1

and on

j

Read by Dr Therese Coffey (DE 1988-1989), Member of Parliament for Suffolk Coastal A reading from the book of Wisdom 7:7-11

I prayed, and understanding was given me; I called upon God, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to sceptres and thrones, and I accounted wealth as nothing in comparison with her. Neither did I liken to her any priceless gem, because all gold is but a little sand in her sight, and silver will be accounted as clay before her. I loved her more than health and beauty, and I chose to have her rather than light, because her radiance never ceases. All good things come to me along with her, and in her hands uncounted wealth .

The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

6

Fill us with your love

Make us know the shortness of our life that we may gain wisdom of heart. Lord, relent! Is your anger for ever? Show pity to your servants. R.

In the morning, fill us with your love; we shall exult and rejoice all our days. Give us joy to balance our affliction

that we

for the years when we knew misfortune. R.

Show forth your work to your servants; let your glory shine on their children. Let the favour of the Lord be upon us: give success to the work of our hands. R.

SECOND READING Read by Brother James Catterson (DE 1959-1961) A reading from the letter to the Hebrews 4:12-13

may re - joice.

The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The Book of the Gospels is carried in procession to the lectern. All stand as the Cathedral Choir sings the Alleluia which is repeated by all. After the verse all join in singing the Alleluia once again

GOSPEL The Lord be with you. R. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 10:17-30 R. Glory to you,O Lord.

As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, 'Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' And Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: "Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honour your father and mother." And he said to him, 'Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth.' And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, 'You lack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.' At that saying his countenance fell, and he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.

And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, 'How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!' And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, 'Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.' And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, 'Then who can be saved?' Jesus looked at them and said, 'With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.' Peter began to say to him, 'Lo, we have left everything and followed you.' Jesus said, 'Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.'

The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

All join in singing the Gospel Acclamation.

HOMilY Archbishop Patrick Kelly

PROFESSION OF FAITH Please join in saying I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation

8

J J

he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin'Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL The Archbishop begins God has summoned us into his presence as Lord of all he invites us to pray for all.

Let us pray to the Lord of all creation that he wiil inspire political leaders to work for that justice whose fruit is lasting peace that all may be liberated from the scourge of war, famine and fear. Lord in your mercy. R. Hear our prayer.

Brother David Ryan says Let us pray for Colonel Paddy Bryson and all those associated with St Edward's who have died recently, that the Lord grant them peace of light, refreshment and peace and comfort to all those who mourn. Lord in your mercy. R. Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for St Edward's community, that all may grow in wisdom and that those called by the Lord to leave all things and follow him will generously obey. Lord in your mercy. R. Hear our prayer.

We ask Mary, seat of wisdom to join her prayers with ours as we say. Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Let us pray in silence.

The Archbishop concludes God and Father, source of all that we have and are. Teach us to use the talents you have given us for the service of all and to your greater glory. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.
