SAT ONLY - SA 01 EASTERBROOK HOUSE PETERS CREEK ROAD, KUITPO FOREST (SEE MAP) 5201 [Gregory (regional road map) 10-E14] UBD MAP REF: 323 J14 The property comprises about 11 ha of the last remnant native bushland in the Kuitpo locality. For ten years landcare, weed eradication and bushfire mitigation work has been carried out on the land. The house has a steel frame with aerated autoclave concrete infill and insulated steel roof decks and concrete floors. There is a small upper loft and subsidence tower in the spiral stair tower. There is a conservatory, and within the house heat is distributed by ceiling fan and a “heat shifter” in the ceiling space with outlets in each bedroom. A 1.5 kW wind generator provides

electricity and a solar water heater with wood and gas backup is used for water heating. Compared with normal compliant energy efficient houses (using about 22kWhr/day), this house uses 4.2kWhr/day and exports excess on-site renewable energy to mains as Green Power.SAT ONLY - SA 02 THE YOUNG HOUSE 1 SEASHORE AVENUE, SELLICKS BEACH UBD REF 227 G14  [Gregory 354-B14]

This new house, designed by Architect Max Pritchard & completed early 2005, is a boomerang shaped house that fits onto a corner block, maximising solar heat gain. The roof shape and slope accommodates solar photo-voltaic power and hot water systems. A dual rain/mains water reticulation system is to be completed. The front garden will become a major feature, with fruit trees, native plants & vegs scattered here and in the narrow back garden.SAT ONLY - SA 03 THE HAWKER HOUSE LOT 194 DOCTORS HILL ROAD, YANKALILLA(SEE MAP) [Gregory (regional road map) 19-A1]

A framed and aerated concrete panel clad family home with numerous renewable systems and passive performance systems to produce a low energy sustainable home on the farm near Yankalilla, South Australia. The building performance is currently being monitored by Adelaide University.Tours of the house can view both the passive methods and active solar systems integral to the design.SAT ONLY SA 04 Kairl & Thomas Home – the House of BalesWilliams Rd, Currency Creek Just off Mt Compass/Goolwa Rd. (See map on programme)[Gregory (regional road map) 15-H16]On 10 acres near Currency Creek, Lance, Gae and their daughter have built a 2 storey straw bale home which is passive solar and incorporates the extensive use of recycled materials. The home is self sufficient in power, water and the treatment of all waste water. I t is a good example of what can be done with hard work, time and a realistic budget.

SAT ONLY - SA 05 AMANDE BED & BREAKFAST LOT 13 CALIFORNIA ROAD, MCLAREN VALE UBD REF 206 J11 [Gregory 317-D11]

This property is a heritage listed homestead built in 1890, nestled among the vineyards of McLaren Vale. It had been allowed to deteriorate to almost a ruin when the current owners bought it in 2002.They have been sympathetically restoring it and building in energy and water efficiencies as they go. A key consideration has been to maintain the heritage nature of the house. On display will be an adjustable tilt 1.5KW PV array with data logger, solar hot water system, high efficiency gas heating, eco septic with recycled grey and black water, recycled roof timbers which are now stunning architraves and skirtings in the newly constructed Bed and Breakfast cottages and some commentary about behaviours (good and bad!).SAT ONLY 11AM – 2PM - SA 06 LONE PINE HOUSE SLEAFORD BAY, 20 KMS SOUTH OF PORT LINCOLN This house has been designed to be energy and water efficient without compromising on comfort. It incorporates the features of sustainable housing such as thermal mass, effective insulation, ventilation and energy efficient appliances while taking full advantage of the panoramic views of Sleaford Bay and the Southern Ocean.

THE FOLLOWING HOUSES ARE OPEN ON SUNDAY 11TH. TOURS WILL BECONDUCTED ON THE HALF HOUR COMMENCING AT 11AM WITH THE LAST

TOUR AT 3.30PM.

SUN ONLY - SA 07 THE PEACOCK HOME 12 DUNBARTON ST, WINDSORGARDENS UBD REF 107-J2 [Gregory 165-J2]

New build and retrofit, demonstration site for water conservation, grey water re-use on the garden, rain water collection for household use and landscaping design to maximise retention of storm-water on site. Photovoltaics, solar hot water and gas.

SUN ONLY - SA 08 FROMMER & SVED HOUSE 13 RIVER STREET, ST PETERS UBDREF 2 P4 [Gregory 182-G1]

Two houses on one block. One a small 1950's cottage which is gradually being renovated toimprove energy efficiency. The other an interesting new house, with good solar performance

despite extensive glazing to maximise the views. The property is a demonstration site for water conservation (Council of Norwood, Payneham and StPeters), with grey water re-use on the garden, rain water collection for household use andlandscaping design to maximise retention of storm-water on site.

SUN ONLY - SA 09 THE GRANGE HOUSE 45 SWAN STREET, GRANGE UBD REF115 M1 [Gregory 178-B1]

A 1947 double brick home on 1200 square m block, extended in the early 1980,s and again by thecurrent owners in 2004. The property was bought in 1994 for the land, the site placement of thehouse and the existing shed. This house provides examples of retrofitting to use more sustainableenergy, water and food resources and is a work in progress. The owner’s philosophy has been towork with the site as is. Features are: extension design to reduce consumption ,use of sea

breezes, fans, curtaining, pergolas, balcony, skylights and fuel efficient combustion heater forcooling and heating, tank and bore water use, permaculture garden, chickens, accumulatedunderstanding of microclimate, use of organic finishes including non-toxic ”designer” kitchen.

SUN ONLY - SA 10 KEIRSTIE & TROY HOUSE 7 OLAVE HILL ROAD, UPPER STURTUBD REF 155 M7 [Gregory 238-B7]

Underground house in Upper Sturt. Somewhere to grow old as we pillage the planets resources, destroy the atmosphere & ignore overpopulation & conspicuous consumption. (I’m not normally thisgrumpy but critical analysis does breed positive outcomes).

SUN ONLY - SA 11 IRONBANK HOUSE LOT 100, IRONBANK ROAD, IRONBANKUBD REF 156 K15 [Gregory 239-E15]

This straw-bale walled, passive solar design, “sustainable” house was converted from a steel frameshed over a period of about 2 years by “owner-builders”. The house and landscape feature many

ecologically sustainable initiatives such as grey water recycling via a reed-bed system andirrigation area (fruit orchard), composting toilet, salvaged building materials, energy generation(photovoltaic cells), solar hot water, super insulated walls (straw-bale), double glazed windows,“cool cupboard” for food storage (under development), wood oven linked to in-slab floor heating, rainwater tanks and non-toxic surface finishes.

SUN ONLY - SA 12 BIRD’S VIEW 43 SUN VALLEY DRIVE, GLENALTA UBD REF 143B16 [Gregory 219-B16]

This architecturally designed house was primarily constructed in 2002. The residence benefits fromthe high insulation qualities of the strawbale walls to create a pleasant living environment in thiscold climate. The earthy colours and rounded forms created by the strawbale construction create awarm and welcoming feel to the open plan living areas upstairs. Large windows opennortheastward to absorb the sun and offer views of the hills and a birdseye view into the treetops. The downstairs has been designed to contribute to the houses thermal efficiency. The western endhas been dug into the hillside with the eastern end being built of Hebel Block. Downstairs roomsare more enclosed and have a private atmosphere. This is in contrast to the open-plan upstairslayout.

SUN ONLY - SA 13 LYON HOUSE ROBERTSON ROAD, KERSBROOK (SEE MAP)Travel approx. 7km north of Kersbrook along the Little Para Rd then turn right into Watts Gully Rd, travel approx. 3km to get to the house location shown.

A newly built, underground home. North and South facing windows for cross-flow of air. Woodstove for heating (and heating water). Rainwater collected on-site. Biocycle waste water system.Swimming pool topped up with rainwater and surrounded by natural bushland. Also has extensivebushfire prevention features built in.

SUN ONLY - SA 14 EAGLES NEST SECT 187 WOODLANDS RD, COCKATOOVALLEY (SEE MAP) {CFS regions1,2,3 map 178B 01-63}
