Born a slave in New York State in1798
She was owned by a Dutch patroon
She wasn't schooled but acquired vast knowledge about
the bible
She helped with the abolitionist and women rights
movemnent by writing her famous speech "Ain't I a woman"
Real name was Isabella but adopted the name Sojourner
Truth in 1843

Escaped slavery in 1827 by fleeing to a Quaker
Family named the Van Wageners
Helped during the civil war by collecting supplies
for black regiments
