STEP #1 Locate the last page of the soil survey
book
Open the map and locate the area of interest
Note the map sheet number for the area of interest
STEP #2 Turn to the map sheet indicated for your
area of interest
Find the plot of land you are interested in researching
STEP #3 List the map unit symbols that are in your
area of interest Samples may be the following symbols: AsB,
BaC, Ce, Fa, etc…
STEP#4 Turn to the “Index to Soil Map Units” on
page iv
List the page numbers beside each map unit sample for your area
Research your map unit samples by turning to the pages as indicated above
STEP #5 Turn to “Summary of Tables” listed on
page v for page numbers of various tables For example: Crop yields is the fifth item listed
and the table begins on page 61 Turn to page 61 for an explanation about crop
yields for each map unit symbol listed for your land area
STEP #6 Use the “Contents” page if more
information is needed or if you need other information such as: Soil Properties Classification of Soils Formation of Soils References Glossary of terms Soil Series information
