    1. Suvachan (Words of wisdom)(a) Shree Guru Uvaach (Quotes from the Master)

Param Pujya Dr. Jayant Balaji Athavale

All Gurus are the same internally, though externally their physical appearances may differ. Just

as the milk oozing from any udder of a cow is equally pure and clean, similarly there exists only one

Guru Principle in all Gurus and the frequencies ofAnand(Bliss) emanating from all of them are the

same. Just as sea waves advance towards the shore, the waves of Brahman (God), ie. the Guru come

towards the society. The taste of water in all the sea waves is the same. Similarly, the principle in all

the Gurus is one and the same, ie. Brahman.

    Transliteration:

dharmaH shRuto vaa dRuShTo vaa smRuto vaa kathito.pi vaa

samvaadito vaa raajendra punaati puruShaM sadaa -- subhaaShitasudhaanidhi

    Meaning ofsubhAShita :

Oh King, dharma if heard, or seen, or thought of, or spoken of, or approved of - cleanses a being

    always.

(c)Dharma Dhaara(i) In Bharatiya culture, art was a medium for salvation. Thus, it was perceived as a Yogmaarg

(Path of spiritual practice) to attain God. Today, art is being used for satiating carnal

desires. Earlier, artists used to portray the tales ofavatars (incarnation), saints, ascetics,

Mahapurush (great ones), national leaders and tapasvinis (woman ascetics). Today, byshowing tales on the celluloid from lives of sensuous women and venereal men, the

societys mind is being systematically polluted and by giving national awards to such artists,

our ruling, Adharmi (treacherous), lowly and ill-cultured government is encouraging the

sketching of other characterless men and women on the celluloid. Really, a secular society

starts living a life worse than that of an animal.

(ii) Some of my friends ask me to work with them to eradicate unemployment, somerequest me to make efforts to eradicate illiteracy, some say that I should associate myself

with their efforts to stop female infanticide, while some others say that I should connect

with them to wipe out corruption; but our Shree Guru has taught us a very beautiful

viewpoint in this regard. The root cause of all problems is lack ofDharmaacharan (abiding

the code of conduct as per Vedic Dharma) at the societal and individual plane. Today, a

plethora of laws have been formulated on female infanticide, dowry, terrorism, corruption

etc. but there is no proof of any improvement in the situation. The root cause is Dharma

Glaani (degeneration due to not abiding Dharma) and the solution is establishment of

    Dharma (Righteousness).

(iii) In the real sense, Vidya or learning awakens our mind and Vivek(sattvik intellect); buttoday, the demonic secular education system started by Macaulay has not even left us

worthy of discriminating between what is wrong and what is right. That is why, in this

Bharatiya culture, which at one point of time was Sattva-predominant, intellectuals keep

their attitude of discrimination aside and blindly imitate the Western culture which is

completely devoid of spiritual reasoning, is Tamoguni(spiritually impure) and denuded of

the science of spirituality. Indeed, Macaulays Nidharmi education pattern has shown itscolours.

(iv) In the real sense, only the knowledgeable ones and self-realised saints who have reallyexperienced the tenets of Vedic Sanatan Dharma alone can impart education on the subtle

aspect of spirituality and most profound Shaastras (scriptures). Others only have

pretensions of being spiritual and thus end up increasing their sins.

    (v) In comparison to happiness, unhappiness teaches us more. Happiness makes us extrovertsand sorrow helps us get introvert. A true devotee does not let go of his/her devotion to the

Almighty even when distress comes, rather on the other hand tries to increase his/her Bhav

(spiritual emotion) towards the Supreme being to face the situation.

(vi) Happiness and grief are relative to objects, time and circumstances; while bliss is derivedirrespective of objects, time and the circumstances favourable or unfavourable.

(vii) Bhakti kare koi surma, means although path of devotion is an extremely easy path toSadhana (spiritual practice), yet not everyone can tread this path. Thus, Saint Kabir Das

has said, Bhakti kare koi surma, meaning devotion can be done only by one who possesses

a fighting spirit. Just as gold turns pure upon heating, adverse circumstances in life are the

    litmus test for a devotee.

(viii) How do saints read our thoughts?Saints of the highest order are in a state of thoughtlessness. Just as we can clearly see our

reflection in a clean mirror similarly our thoughts get reflected in the pure mind of a saint.Sadgurus are permanently tuned to the universal mind and the universal intellect.

(ix) Just as God assumes an iota ofTamogun (spiritually impure Tama component) at the timeof his incarnation, similarly saints having attained the status of ' ' AhamBrahma Asmi(I am Brahma, the Supreme Being) ,

embrace a minuscule portion of ego and perform Dharma-Kaarya (propagation of the

tenets ofDharma) and this is known as Saatvik Aham (pure ego).

    (x) Just as a wife by being devoted to her noble and Dharmacharni (the one who strictlyabides by Dharma) husband automatically receives all the worldly and spiritual

achievements earned by him, similarly a Sadgurus entire spiritual energy is automatically

transferred to a capable and deserving disciple. Then there is no difference between the

Master and disciple and the disciple is in unison with the subtle body of the Master.(xi) No genuine disciple approaches a Master with the desire of becoming a Master, but every

capable disciple culminates in a Master. This is an eternal truth.

Krushna has said in Gita that immediately after death,Jivatma (embodied soul) assumes a physical

form again. Hence, when ancestors are born soon after death, where does the question of giving

them Gati(momentum after life through spiritual pursuit) arise ?

To respond to such questions, let us understand the science of spirituality. First of all, until or unless

all the accumulated fruits of past karmas good or bad doesnt get nullified by theJivatma (embodied

soul) , the final liberation cannot be attained; theJivatma is compelled to be born again and againand has to follow the cycle of birth and death on earth.

Including the Earth, there are seven worlds: Bhu, Bhuva, Swarg, Maha, Jan, Tap and Satya. After

death, the embodied soul goes to different worlds according to their deeds and Sadhana (spiritual

practice). If a Jivatma (embodied soul) has committed many sins, the soul has to undergo different

kinds of torture in various hell regions and if he or she has done good deeds then that embodied soul

experience pleasures in Swarglok(heaven). Having enjoyed fruits of the good deeds in heaven or

undergoing torture due to bad deeds in hell, if the time has come, the embodied soul has to take birth

on earth again. This vicious cycle keeps repeating itself. The souls that become Brahmadnyani (highly

realised), get liberated from the cycle of birth and death and according to their spiritual level, proceed

for Mahalok(higher heaven) or even higher levels of the subtle region; and return to earth either to

do Sadhana (spiritual practice) at faster pace for spiritual progress and attain final liberation, or

according to Gods will take birth to do Dharm-Kaarya (work pertaining to Dharma); they are known

as divyaatmas ( the blessed souls).

If a Ling Dehs (subtle body) desires or passions remain unfulfilled, or it has committed several sins

and is not able to migrate to heaven or hell, they become an unsatiated subtle body. Their

descendants have to practice Sadhana (spiritual practice) to provide them Gati(momentum after life

to higher subtle regions). This is known as ancestral debt. Shri Krushna has said in the second chapter

    ofGita:

All the beings had been latent before birth and after death, remain in latent existence. Only upon

this earth, they assume a physical body. Hence, why worry about this subject?

It means theJivatma is in a latent existence before birth, and even after death. Till the time of taking

rebirth, its subtle existence continues, thereby meaning there is no immediate birth after death

always. This is a point worth noting. This makes it clear that the so-called intellectuals and the

knowledge of the alleged Dnyaanmargis is hollow and they confound the society by totally distorting

    the meaning of spirituality.

    2. Basic principles of spiritual practiceThe best Sadhana in Kaliyug (Age of Kali) - Namsankirtanyog

In the age of Kali, the Sattvikta(purity levels) of the ordinary people have hit the rock bottom

and understanding the profound gist ofVedas and Upanishads has become extremely difficult. Thus,

Sadhana of Dnyanayog (Path of knowledge) has also become difficult. At present, people do not even

have time to perform Puja (ritualistic worship) for 10 minutes. Hence, performing

Dhyanyog(meditation) and concentrating for years altogether too is not possible. Similarly,

performing the rites and rituals according to Karm Kaand(the ritualistic procedures laid down in the

scriptures) also have become difficult during the present times, since procuring satttvik(spiritually

pure) material is alos a problem and a Purohit(priest)who is sattvik and well versed in scriptures is

extremely important for performing such rites and rituals. Besides, it is also not easy to follow the

stringent rules laid down for Karm Kaand. Hence, the easiest path in Kaliyug is Bhakti Marg (the path

of devotion), and under it, is Namsankirtanyog (Path of chanting the Lords name). This is the most

simple and easy path ofSadhana in the present time.

Now, we will take a look at the importance ofNamsankirtanyog:

It has been said in Manusmriti:

    :

    -( .)

    Ye pakayagnaaashchtvaro vidhiyagyasamanvitah

Sarve te japaygyasy kalaam naarhantishodasheem - (Manusmriti, 2.86)

Meaning : The four ritualistic sacrifices [namely Vaishvadev, Balikarma, Nityashraddha and

offering food to guests (Atithibhojan)] do not match even the 16th grade of the sacrificial fire of

    chanting (japayadnya)

The word Jap in Naamjap (chanting) originates from Ja+ Pa. The word Jap has beendescribed as ' : Jakaro jan vicchedakah pakaro paapnaashakah meaning That which liberates us from the cycle of birth and death, and destroys

our sins is calledJap. Continuity in Sadhana is possible only with Naamjap(chanting). If we desire unison with the

eternal Supreme Being, we will have to do continuous Sadhana; like read the scriptures

continuously (according to Gnan Yog); or sit in continuous mediation; do Traatak or

Pranayam ; or sing Bhajans (devotional hymns) non-stop; undertake pilgrimages; or listen to

Kirtans (devotional songs) or discourses continuously. But it is not possible to do these things

twenty four hours of the day. Besides, for a householder, looking after home, children, job

and balancing all this then doing Sadhana at the same time is very difficult. Hence, the best

method to maintain continuity in Sadhana is chanting.

Some people have a misunderstanding that we can make spiritual progress through

Aasans (Yogic postures) and Pranayam(breathing exercises). This in itself is an erroneous

perception. Aasans and Pranayam do not have the ability to ensure our spiritual progress.

They can only purify to some extent our gross body and Pran Deh (vital energy body) .These

bodies can be purified through other means also. Hence,Aasans and Pranayam have not been

given much importance in spiritual progress. I will cite an example. In Godda district of

Jharkhand, a family have been doing Aasans and Pranayam under the guidance of a Yoga

Master and also teaches the same to others. But all members of this family suffer from physical

and mental troubles because their ancestors are extremely unsatiated and they also face the

wrath ofKuldevi(family deity). Yogic Kriyas (some physical techniques as per deliberate rigour

or hathyog ) can purify the body, but cannot grant Gati(momentum after life) to the ancestors;nor can the family deities be appeased. For resolving all these troubles, appropriate Sadhana

(spiritual practice) had to be done.

Ever since this family started appropriate Sadhana , the severity of their problems has

been decreasing. Aasans and Pranayam are apt for those who are not able to do Sadhana

through any other means. Aasans and Pranayam merely purify the body, and by enhancing

the physical capacity, one gets the power to endure Prarabdh (destiny).

  • 7/31/2019 Soham English Vol 1- Issue No 9

    9

SOHAM - Newsletter by Tanuja Thakur - Vol.1 Issue No 9

By doing Sadhana through any other Yogmarg (path of spiritual practice), the physical

body and Pran Deh can be purified only by 20% to 30%. But to be able to proceed to heaven

and the regions beyond it such as Maha, Jan, Tap, or Satya Lok, the purification of all the

bodies is absolutely necessary. Through chanting, complete purification of all the four bodies

ie. gross body, mind, intellect and ego is possible. This is the importance ofNamsankirtanyog.

    3. Practical guidance on implementation of spiritualityBenefits ofSatsang

The word Satsang originates from Sat+ Sang. The word Sathere means God, or element of

Brahma or Absolute Truth, That which is Eternal, which is Constant and Never-changing is called Sat

and Sang means company, meaning a conducive environment for practicing spirituality and in return

receiving Anubhuti (spiritual experience of God, or Absolute Truth). Going to a temple to listen to

Bhajans or Pravachan (spiritual discourse), going on pilgrimages, reading spiritual books, company of

other seekers, or to go for Darshan (spiritual glimpse) of a Guru or saints, these acts provideincreasing levels ofSatsang (holy company) in that sequential order.

Satsang is of two types: one is external and the other internal. When our union or connection,

with God becomes uninterrupted and the consistency never breaks down, that is known in real terms

as Satsang and this type ofSatsang is known as internal Satsang. In this kind ofSatsang, saints and

spiritually evolved ones (those above 60% spiritual level) are permanently connected internally with

God, be in a place of worship, or in a fish market, in a cremation ground, or in a palace full of

opulence, they remain in a state of permanent communion with God; external influence does not

have any impact on their unison and integrity with God. But this becomes possible only at a very high

    level of spirituality.

As it is not possible for an ordinary person, or a seeker who has just begun his/her spiritualjourney, what should one do? Until we are not tuned with the universal principle continuously, we

must surely take the support of external Satsang.

    Who are Saints?

External Satsang is of many types. First of all, let us understand what is the best external Satsang?

The best external Satsang is the company of saints. Who are saints? The manifest form of the

omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent principle of God means saints. Thus, saints are omnipresent

    and omnipotent.

Those who have performed intense Sadhana and attained unison with God are called saints; but the

number of such saints in Kaliyug is very small. We cannot recognise saints with our physical eyes and

gross intellect. What is the reason?

Let us look at and understand the spiritual definition of a saint. AJivatma whose mind, intellect and

ego are totally dissolved and they have become one with the universal mind and universal intellect, is

called a saint. How can a person whose mind, intellect and ego have dissolved be recognised by an

ordinary person with five senses and a normal gross intellect ? Therefore, to understand saints andexperience the same, a solid foundation of Sadhana is required or one should possess evolved sixth

senses, or there should be a Bhav (spiritual emotions) towards God. Else, even if you are in the

company of saints, you will not be able to recognise them.

Saintly Householder: Several saints are not recognized by ordinary people and they perform Sadhana

secretly. In April 2010, I had gone to Dehri-on-Sone in Bihar for a five-day discourse. On the fourth

day, when I reached the venue, a Bhajan being sung from the stage in an extremely sweet, divine

voice caught my attention. The voice was of a seeker, who had retired from government service. He

used to dress like a sanyasi and sing Bhajans, and was doing Sadhana while living the life of ahouseholder.

    Pujya Chetan Dasji

After listening to his Bhajans, when I made a subtle analysis, I came to know that he was indeed

nearing a saintly level (his spiritual level was 68%). It was not known to any of his neighbours that a

Jivatma (embodied soul) of such a high spiritual level was doing Sadhana in their midst.

People used to respect him as a saintly householder, but no one knew that he was nearly a saintly

figure. When I went there in April this year, I found through subtle sense that He (Shri Vidya Shankar

Mishra) had attained a spiritual level of 70% through his consistency in sadhana and that he had

achieved the gurupad- guru level of the saintly order(at 80 % spiritual level, the saint achieves the

sadguru level and at 90% theparatparlevel is achieved). Hence, it was essential to accord the

honour, He deserved. Thus, on the last day of the discourse, I publicly announced His saintly stature ,

while he was hesitatingly saying, Mother, do not reveal me, let me stay in disguise. Such are saints!!

    1. Doing aarti of Pujya baba after 2. Pujya Chetan Dasji blessingannouncing His saint hood stature the seekers

He had been initiated by His Holiness Devraha Baba in 1966 and Baba had named him Chetan

Das. Baba had already told him, practice sadhana leading the life as a householder, you will

attain self-realisation. Words of saints are bramavakya (set in stone); hence, he had to

become a saint. Hence the presence of the spiritually evolved ones (in its pure sense) cannot

be felt by ordinary people; so keep in mind that saints have no special identity in the physical

form. hey can be Sanyasis (mendicants), or righteous householders too; they can be of any

age, of any caste, or be a man, or woman. Hence, it is unfair to restrict saints within physical

    parameters.

    4. Anubhutis (spiritual experiences) of seekersWe will first see the anubhutis of Mrs Priya Kumar

    Anubhutis of Smt. Priya Kumar.

Ever since I have been connected to Tanuja Didi on Facebook, my life has undergone many a

change. Hence, I want to share few of myAnubhutis with you all.

Whenever I want to know about anything, the very next day I get the answer to my question

through the medium of Tanuja Didis articles on Facebook.

    Shrimati Priya Kumar

    Analysis ofAnubhuti:

If God wants to provide guidance to the Seekers, or the curious ones; and if they have a

yearning to know Sadhana; they get the answers to their queries through such writings that have

Chaitanya (divine consciousness in it). I share only the writings of saints of the highest order, or

Anubhutis, or memoirs related to my own Sadhana, or the teachings imparted by my Shree Guru,

on Facebook. Hence, due to Chaitanya in the writings, seekers and curious ones get such types of

    Anubhutis.

(The evidence ofChaitanya in the writings of saints of highest order is more pronounced). Many

times you might have noticed that a few friends tag my name in some articles; these contain

merely a passing reference to spirituality and their articles only display spirituality at a

psychological plane. I remove my name from such articles; for the evidence ofChaitanya in such

articles is negligible. This is why a friend once remarked, You have a lot of ego, that is why you do

not want to learn from anyone elses writing. The interest to learn at the level of words was

decimated by the grace of our Shree Guru in 2006; because once the mind starts enjoying the stateof bliss which is the Anubhuti of beyond words, the interest in learning through words gets

destroyed. I struggle with myself to talk , read or or write something; for now nothing

appears blissful at the level of words; only to express my gratitude towards my Shreeguru

(Master) and to guide the Seekers and the curious ones, do I read and write. In doing so, God is

aware of my internal struggle. Thus, due to Chaitanya in the writings, those in my friends circle,

who possess seekership qualities or are curious, get such spiritual experiences.

(ii) I always experienced a black shadow coming out of my gross body; especially beforegoing out anywhere, it could be seen coming out from my body. For this reason, I would

not succeed in that work. Since I started salt-water treatment, the black shadowdisappeared to emerge from me and I got liberated from the troubles caused by

    negative energies.

    Analysis ofAnubhuti:

Salt-water and cows urine possess a strong ability to set one free from the problems caused by

negative energies. Besides, this is a spiritual solution recommended by my Shree Guru for resolution

of troubles caused by negative energies. His resolve and blessings are inherent in it. Therefore, after

doing this treatment regularly, seekers troubled by negative energies get such spiritual experiences.

(iii) After reading Didis article on Mudras (hand gestures), I started doing the spiritualhealing by looking at Didis Mudras. In the past 20 days, I have been getting up early in

the morning without any laziness and I remain quite fresh throughout the day; whereas

earlier I could never get up before 7.30 am In the beginning, I experienced some

problem while looking at few Mudras, as per Didis instruction in the article

I kept looking at those mudras for a few minutes continuously for a few days and within

a few days, I started to feel good looking at them and my getting up late in the morning

    too disappeared.

    Analysis ofAnubhuti:

Spiritual healing through Mudras is a simple method of healing the seekers troubled by

negative energies. If a seeker feels uneasy, while looking at the Mudras, continuously looking at the

same Mudras reduces, or eliminates that problem. This happens due to the Chaitanya(divine

consciousness) emitted by the Mudras. Hence, without the permission of the Master, a seeker should

never heal the persons troubled by negative energies through Mudras even by mistake. Knowingspiritual science and bringing it into action is the sign of seeker-hood. Gods grace flows to such

seekers and they surely get spiritual experiences.

(iv) After reading the first issue of Soham, an important change has started takingplace in my life. I could not do the Guru Dev Dutt chant. After reading the sixth issue of

Soham, the chanting started automatically. I am gradually progressing on the path ofSadhana.

For this, I express my gratitude, both towards God and Tanuja Didi, for they only are providing

me the proper guidance on the path to spiritual progress.

Analysis ofAnubhuti:When the Ordain from God came to start Soham, the weekly spiritual newsletter, those Seekers who

started offering their services for it , all of them, are being troubled by negative energies .

As you must have been reading in Soham from time to time, this itself had given me an inkling that

this weekly periodical will help people make spiritual progress and protect them from the attacks of

negative energies in the near future. Due to the sacrifice of all the Seekers associated with its

publication, their affection for Guru-Tattv (Guru-principle) and the underlying selflessness for

protecting Dharma and the service from translation to emailing of the newsletter, the positive change

in the lives of all Seekers and the curious ones are being experienced, within such a short span of

I have received initiation by Ramakrishna Paramhans Mission and Swami Ramakrishna

Paramhans is my Araadhya (Venerable one). Despite ability and eligibility, my promotion in the job

has been stalled without any good reason. One day, I was telling Tanuja Didi that I remain under a lot

of stress due to this reason. Didi simply said, Was your Aaradhya, Ramkrishna Paramhans aCommissioner? This sentence of Didi altered the course of my life and all my tension on this issue

    disappeared.

    Analysis ofAnubhuti:

Due to the absence of a spiritual perspective, we remain trapped in the throes of Maya

(illusion), viz designation, prestige, money, wealth etc. Several people in this world attain high posts

ofMaya every year; but true devotees and saints get eternal fame without any efforts made for it.

Hence, one desirous of fame must first become a Seeker, then a disciple, and finally make efforts to

become a saint. All the material objects of Maya come running after such a person and paeans of

such a devotee are sung by God through the medium of other devotees.

    5. Spiritual healing vis-a-vis negative energiesIncompatability between husband and wife.

Two thousand years ago, the Varnashram vyawastha (the system of class and the stages of

life) was the very backbone of the Indian society. Presently, Hindus have discontinued

Dharmaacharan (abiding by the code of conduct as per Vedic Dharma). As a result, the

Varnashram system has collapsed and chaos and distress have increased all around. Over the last

few years, incidents of mutual discord between husband-wife have gone up and as a result, the

overt impact of all this is becoming visible on the progeny. Today the present generation of youth

openly mocks at the institution of marriage and has started adopting live-in relationships. As

such, frivolousness in the society is in the making and several distorted relationships between man

and woman are coming to the fore. This includes extra-marital affairs, perceiving a woman to be

an object of satiating desires, gang-rapes and violence in marital life, which are the major ones.

Husband and wife are like the two wheels of the institution of marriage. Thus, it is imperative

that there is harmony between the two.A majority of people are aware of the causes of discord between the husband and wife and

    they are -

Not fulfilling expectations, difference of opinion, not accepting what the other one says

because of ego, absence of communication between the two, tensions, distrust, addictions, extra-

marital relations, extraordinary change in behaviour due to mental illness et al are some of the

reasons behind this. We will briefly take a look at the spiritual causes of discord:

    (i) The maximum give-and-take is between husband-wife. Thus, Prarabdh(destiny) has amajor contribution in the nature of the relationship they share.

(ii) Unsatiated ancestors devastate the family and for this, they first create bitterness in therelationship and then create differences between them; and after that bring continuity

in discord; and finally break their relationship.

(iii) From 2025, Ram-Rajya is about to set in. For this, in some households Divya Jivatmas(divine embodied souls above the spiritual level of 50%), who are seekers from the

higher heavens or Mahalokhave taken birth.

I have noticed that Maantriks (the most powerful negative energies of the nether world)

of the subtle world are giving trouble to these children, by making an attempt to create

differences between the husband and wife, so that these children have to suffer mental

    agony and social ridicule.

If there is discord between the husband-wife, please try to implement the followings :

    (a) In Indian culture, the home was considered like a temple, where thehouseholders used to practice Sadhana through Dharmaacharan, even while

living the worldly life. The disastrous effects of western culture have degraded

the sanskars (good and divine values ) and reduced it to a place of enjoyment. Inthe absence of education on Dharma, we do not know how to transform a home

into a temple. Hence, we must try to increase the sattvikta (purity) of our

home. For this, try to implement all the measures pertaining to Vaastu Shuddhi

(purification of the premise). We had published about it in our previous issue

still if you want to know it you can go to this link:http://www.tanujathakur.com/?p=1789

    (b) Start doing Sadhana. Appropriate Sadhana in Kaliyug is chanting, so do as muchchanting as possible. You can chant while perfoming your daily chores like

walking, driving, bathing etc. If you have received a Guru Mantra, chant that.

Otherwise chant the name of your family deity, or the deity you venerate. Itreduces the intensity ofPrarabdh(destiny)and the viewpoint of a Seeker is built,

while undergoing the troubles in the household life.

    (c) As soon as the discord starts, observe your own defects and ego with fullalertness and prevent it from getting manifested.

To reduce your defects, write down your mistakes in a notebook on a daily basis

and along with that, what should have been your ideal behaviour in that context

should be written ! Also start giving auto suggestion for the ideal change so that

when a similar situation starts manifesting itself again your defects and ego

dont manifest. This will gradually provide an orientation to your mind and

under adverse circumstances; you will be able to control your emotions.

    (d) Cultivate a spirit of sacrifice. A majority of the marriages break up in trying tosave the ego. The primary objective of the institution of marriage is that the

husband and wife give priority to each others desires and also for bring about

mental and spiritual uniformity so as to reduce their ego. Hence, make efforts in

that direction without expecting the other partner to do the same. In doing so,

seeker-hood will be built within you.

    (e) These days, husband and wife behave curtly with one another due to themisbehaviour of their relatives. This too leads to discord. Do not deride each

other over some unpleasant incidents that may have happened in the past due

to each others relatives. Imbibe the virtue of forgiveness and try living in the

present. If you cannot own up a few chosen relatives, will you ever be able to

experience the spirit ofVasudhaiv Kutumbakam (Whole World is one family?)

    (f)

Present an ideal before your child. It has been found in a research that children, whose parents fight and create discord in front of them develop mental

problems upon growing up. Be ideal parents and be an ideal to your child.

    (g) If there is mutual love between the husband and wife, and if there arisesdiscord without any reason, stay alert for two days before and two days after

Amavasya (No Moon day) and Poornima (Full Moon day). Pray and chant for 15

minutes with a spiritual emotion that May discord never take place due to the

effect of negative energies. If there is discord because of either of the two, it

could also be due to troubles caused by negative energies.

In such a situation, as soon as the environment for discord is created, do Shastr-

Yuddh (subtle armed combat). For this, say a prayer to your benevolent deitythus, O Lord! The negative energy is trying to create discord between us; may

your weapons hurt them and may the black veil on our mind and intellect be

removed. Repeat this prayer time and again.

    (h) If a fight takes place, become introvert and search for the symptoms of ego thatled to the discord, try to remove it and seek an apology. An egoistic person is

not liked by anyone, so how will he/she be dear to God?

    (i) If either the husband or wife suffers from mental illness, do not shy away fromconsulting a psychiatrist; because just as the body can become diseased,

similarly the mind too can have disorders and besides, our Sadhana will not be

expended on curing the mental illness.

    (j) As far as possible, husband-wife should perform Sadhana under the guidance ofthe same Guru (Master).

    (k) Living according to the wish of others is a seeker-ship quality. Thus, husband-wife must accord primacy to each others desires and views and must try to fulfil

them. Remember, the more the Seeker-hood is created inside us, the more we

will remain in bliss and we will be able to receive the flow of Gods grace.

    (l) Devote one-fourth time from your household life for Vyashti Sadhana (spiritualpractice at an individual level) and Samashti Sadhana (spiritual practice at the

societal level) but this should be done with mutual consent and this enables

    Gods grace.

    (m) By offering one-tenth of your earnings to the mission of saints, or to the work ofDharma every month, the severity of spiritual problems in the household life

reduces quickly and it becomes easier to reduce the severity of the destiny andthe household life is spent blissfully.

    (n) A retired householder must try to renounce home, go to an Ashram of theMaster and try to offer their services there, or as far as possible, hand over the

responsibilities to the children, practice Sadhana and read and imbibe religious

scriptures. Remember, sacrificing the attachments is known as Sanyasa

    (renunciation).

    (o) Young couples should serve aged parents/parents-in-law, as it earns theirblessings. All couples should remember that one day they will grow old and

they too will need to be looked after by someone. If they (aged parents) are

disrespected, or disgraced, the fruits of such action will have to be borne in thisbirth or in the next. Nothing remains unattainable for those, who serve their

parents. The sort of behaviour that one shows towards the parents, will be

    inculcated by their children too.

    (p) Dharmen Arthah, means, earn money through fair means and do not earnmoney through corruption, or unfair means. Money earned through immoral

ways takes us towards destruction and creation of strife is an indicator of

    destruction.

    (q) Inviting guests and offering them non-vegetarian food, serving liquor, dancingto western songs played at full volume late at night such acts reduce the

existence of the sattva component in our homes; and negative energies begin to

inhabit the place. Thus, avoid the profane act of hosting modern-style parties.

    (r) Try out all solutions pertaining to Pitru Dosh (problems caused due to unsatiatedancestors). Information on this topic has been provided in the previous issue of

    6. Clarification of doubtsQ.1) Why are Shraddhas not performed for saints?- Rohit Kumar, Ajmer.

To understand this issue, let us comprehend what happens after death?

Firstly, let us understand the composition of the human body. According to the spiritual science,

along with the soul, human body consists of four parts (as discussed earlier in this issue ofSoham).

First is the Sthul Deh - the gross body, meaning that body which can be seen with the eyes.

The other three parts are subtle and they are Mano Deh, meaning the mind, Kaaran Deh, meaningour intellect and Maha Kaaran Deh, meaning our ego. All these taken together constitute our

gross body. After death, the physical body gets merged with the Panch Tattva (Five Elements) and

along with the Soul, mind, intellect and ego in a collective form is called the Ling Deha (subtle

body) goes to the subtle world according to its spiritual level and its good deeds and sins. For the

progress of the Ling Deha in the subtle world, it is important that it must stay light.

And in that world, physical efficiency, money, wealth, riches, prestige, honour etc. have no value

at all; only purity and Sadhana are of importance. The more the desires, or symptoms of ego a

Ling Deha possesses, the more inert it becomes; and it begins to encounter obstacles in making

further progress. In spiritual parlance, this is known as not gaining Gati.

If the Ling Deha has committed too many sins, it has to endure the tortures of hell; and if by

performing Sadhana has attained a good spiritual level, it begins to progress to the higher

heavens. The lesser the impressions of desire and lesser the values of ego remain in a Ling Deha,

the spiritual progress begins to happen at a faster pace to the heavens or higher subtle regions.

The provision ofShraddha has been laid down in Hindu Dharma, so that theJivatma of a dead

person may not get stuck because of any attachment.

According to the procedure ofShraddha, if the subtle soul of a dead person gets stuck because of

some attachment, the energy generated from the Shraddha provides impetus to progress after life

    in the subtle world.

It is not necessary to conduct Shraddha for saints. The reason is that the mind, intellect and ego of

the saints have become merged with the God principle. Thus after their death, their physical body

gets merged with Panchtattwa and the soul that exits from Brahmaandra or Sahasrar Chakra,

dissolves with the Brahmaanda (Universe). Hence, it is not necessary to perform Shraddha forsaints. Thus, many a time you would have noticed that the physical body of the saints is buried and

their Samadhi is constructed. According to Hindu Dharma, the body of an ordinary person goes

through cremation ritual. Before death and after death, bodies of saints keep emitting Chaitanya

(divine consciousness) and saints are icons of philanthropy; that their devotees may continue to

receive the divine consciousness being emitted from the body of saints even when they leave their

body; that is why Samadhis are constructed. Saint Kabir Das has written a really beautiful couplet

    regarding this aspect of saints:

    |

Vruksha kabhi nahin phal bhakaye nadi na sanche neer

Paramarth ke kaarane sadhun dhara shareer

It means saints keep thinking about the welfare of others before death and even after death. At

    times, some saints ask that their bodies be thrown in front of animals after death;

while some ask for it to be left to be immersed in the river water after death, the subtle bodies

and intellects of these saints have been totally dissolved. Thus, their thought process is such that

even after their death, their bodies should become the food for animals.

Some saints honour the desires of their devotees and grant permission for the last rites to be

    performed upon their bodies. One issue should be remembered; death is subservient to saints;

and ordinary persons are subservient to death. This is the predominant difference between an

ordinary person and a saint. Thus, saints merely give up their physical form. They do not die.

They can embrace death whenever they want. Hence, some saints have been found to have given

up their physical form sitting in Padma-Asana (Lotus posture).

This is the rationale behind garlanding the saints before their death; their ego has been destroyed.

Their photographs too are put up for the same reason, for their photographs too emit divine

    consciousness.

These issues would have made it clear that what we can do with saints cannot be done with

ordinary people. Hence, it is extremely important to perform the Shraddha for ordinary persons.

According to Sanatan Dharma, their last rites must be performed as per the laid down rules and

procedures in the scriptures, as it is very important for their onward Gati.

Q.2) After chanting Sri Guru Dev Dutt, I have been having pain in the left part of my body.

Why is it so? - Kiran Kumar, Mumbai.

Your ancestors are unsatiated and for so many days you have completely ignored them. Hence,

they are indignant and are now trying to put obstacles in chanting. But you must continue

chanting. After some time, this trouble will disappear on its own. Thus, if a house or a person is

troubled by negative energies, while chanting Sri Guru Dev Dutt, there might be some problems

in the beginning. But after some time, the troubles will get reduced, or will be resolvedautomatically.

    7. Efforts made by seekers for spiritual progressSmt. Kaushalya Devi gets a place in Mahalokdue to her Vyashti Sadhana

In July 2008, when I met Kaushalya Dadi in my village, I felt that her internal Sadhana

was continuing secretly and in the sub conscious mind; but herJivatma was stuck for something really

trivial, keeping her away from liberation from the cycle of birth and death. I asked her to chant Lord

Krishnas name. From that day onwards, she immediately heeded to me and started chanting; and in

October 2010, she reached the 60% spiritual level and got a place for herself in Mahalok. Her son and

daughter-in-law told me that since the beginning, she had been introvert in her behaviour and had

been of an extremely peaceful nature. Not even one member of the family had any complaint against

her at any point of time. A different kind of peace and bliss was visible on her face. When I told Dadi

that you have to constantly chant Lord Krushnas name, she told her two-and-a-half year old grandson

(Raunak Thakur) to remind her to keep chanting. In the last issue, I had mentioned about Raunak

Thakur. Kaushalya Devi is his grandmother. It thus becomes evident how her ego is very low.

Performing Sadhana under the guidance of Upasana, Kaushalya Devi is the first seeker to get a placein Mahalok.

The importance of attaining the 60% level is:

    (i) One can fight withMaantriks of the fourth patal (there are seven patals) of the nether worldfor a period of about four months.

(ii) If such Seekers maintain regularity in their Sadhna and do not let their ego to develop, theycan attain the level of a Saint within four to five years. (A Seeker can become a Saint at

    70% level).

Special features of Seekers who have achieved 60% level, or more:

    (a) They are capable of freeing themselves of worldly desires and from the clutches ofMaya(Illusion).

    (b) A divine fragrance emanates from their body and belongings.(c)Their mind begins to acquire aManolay (dissolution of mind), so that they can receive thoughts

    from the Universal principle.

    (d) After they leave their body, they get a place inMahalok(Lok above heaven ).Our Shri Guru has written in the holy text Kshaatra Dharm Sadana(Spiritual practice

of a warrior class) that the period between the years 2000 and 2025 is Sandhi-Kaal (the

transition period between two different timeperiods). The peculiarity of this period will be that

with accurate Sadhna, Seekers can achieve spiritual progress of a lifetime within one year.

    8. Obstacles during Dharma Yatra & Dharma Prasar

On May 2012, a public discourse had been organized on behalf ofUpasana Hindu Dharmotthan

Sansthan (Upasana Society for Hindu Resurgence) at Karnavati (Ahmedabad) in Gujarat. The

responsibility of the programme had been shouldered by Shri Kshitij Dhanak. Just when the time

came for events publicity, on May 8 his daughter met with an accident while driving a two-wheeler.

We will see how negative energies pose problems for seekers who do samasthi sadhana (spreading

spirituality in the society) and how God grants them (Seekers) spiritual experiences.

What is special is that giving an account of his seeker-hood, Kshitij did not get panicked and kept

doing his samshti sadhana of performing the Seva (service) of publicity for pravchan. Consequently,

    he got anAnubhuti.

On May 8, 2012, my daughter, who is studying in Class XII, met with an accident while driving her

two-wheeler. She got severe injuries, particularly on the left side of the face and on her feet. We

immediately rushed her to a hospital, where an X-Ray was taken and she was administered medicines.By Gods grace the tests confirmed that she did not have any broken bones, but the injuries on the

left side of the face and near the eye and eyebrow were quite severe. We were afraid that the scars

might become permanent. My friend, Shri Satish too arrived for help by the evening. He too is doing

Sadhana under the aegis ofUpasana. I told him not to mention anything about it to Ma (I address

Tanuja Didi as Ma). But early next morning, Ma called me up and in the midst of the conversation,

enquired about the family members. Thus, I had to tell her everything about the accident. Ma said,

You dont worry about it. I will start spiritual healing from here. She was in Jharkhand at that time.

My daughter got miraculously cured within a short time. We had to go to a doctor every alternate dayand he would say your daughter getting cured within such a short span is a miracle. Otherwise in

such an accident, the scars do turn permanent. Surely there is some divine intervention, the doctor

said this on four different days of treatment. My entire family is totally convinced that this has

become possible due to Mas grace and the spiritual healing done by her. My daughter was so

seriously injured that one did not know how many months it would have taken for the scars to go. But

she got totally cured on the 12th

day itself; and as directed by Ma, she reached the venue of the

discourse and performed the Seva of video recording of the spiritual discourse delivered by Maa. The

injuries on her face and feet got cured within 11 days.

Analysis ofAnubhuti: , :Dharma aivo hato hanti, Dharma rakshati

rakshatah . Meaning one who protects Dharma, or is making efforts to spread it tenets, Dharma

(meaning Veritable Lord Vishnu) protects him. When I was talking to Kshitjis wife, she told me that an

astrologer had already predicted that the month of May could be troublesome for the daughter and

as recommended by the astrologer, they had also done the spiritual solutions.

The point to note here is that this incident took place 11 days before the discourse (the prime period

for publicity of the discourse). Whatever happened with his daughter was in accordance with

Prarabdh(destiny) butnegative energies made this accident happen just a few days before the

discourse to create hurdles in its publicity and to create a doubt about sadhana in their minds.

Nevertheless, the entire family gave evidence of their seeker-hood and kept their faith going

continuously. Consequently the severity of the problems reduced faster which they feel is a spiritual

    experience.

Memoirs with my master Part II

In May 1997, I was blessed having the first glimpse of my Shreeguru and his satsang too.

In the very first audience, through the medium of multiple experiences He familiarized me with his

omnipresence. First of all, I am presenting a few anubhutis that I had during my first audience with

    Him :-

    1. His one statement eradicated the intense sanskar (impression) of watching cricketThe day I went to have my first glimpse, a one-day cricket match was being played between

India and Pakistan. Like other youth, I too had excessive interest in watching cricket. Being a day-

night match, I was watching the match on Doordarshan, having returned from office. I was so

interested in watching the game that I had already told one of the seekers the previous day itself that

I would not be able to come for service the next day. But ever since I had started going for Sanatan

Sansthas discourse, I had been offering my service by spreading spirituality after office hours.

Back home, I had watched the match for barely half an hour when my mind began to get

perturbed. Suddenly, I did not feel like watching the match; it seemed as if someone was calling me.

Switching off the television set, when I went to the spot from where I used to go for daily service

along with a seeker, I found that she was all alone and was waiting for another seeker who could not

come for some reason. She felt happy upon seeing me and was also surprised. She said: You were

not supposed to come? Smilingly, I replied What to do, you forced me to come here. Both of us

rendered the seva for about an hour, after which she said, I have to go to His Holiness Gurudevs

Ashram in Mumbai for some seva, would you like to accompany me? His Holiness Dr Athavale wasthen staying at Mumbai. I could not believe it, for just two months ago, when I had expressed a

desire to have a glimpse of Param PujyaGurudev, she had said To get a glimpse of a saint, one has

to increase ones eligibility of a good seeker. And for that, we have to do Naam Jap and Dharma

Prasaar(speading spiriutuality) and only after the eligibility is fulfilled, can you have the good fortune

of having his glimpse. I was then in Mumbai only. Barely two months ago, having read a book

written by His Holiness Dr. Jayant Balaji Athavale through a relative, I had gone to attend a discourse

    ofSanatan Sanstha.

I was so impressed by the writing style and knowledge that I wanted to meet Him

immediately. In reality, even after coming to know of the discourse, it seemed as if some invisible

force was obstructing my way and even though I wanted to, I was not able to attend the discourse.

Merely by reading a book written by His Holiness, I had crossed all obstacles and could reach the

discourse. And when I talked about having an audience with His Holiness Dr. Jayant Athavale, the

same seeker had said For his glimpse, we will have to make an effort to become a Seeker and to

inculcate qualities of a Seeker. I had started doing Seva under the guidance of that seeker .

When I once asked her as to how much time it took to build the eligibility, she smiled and said

This depends upon your efforts and yearning, and also said that sometimes the efforts have to be

made for years together. Thus, when she asked me to accompany her to Sion Ashram in Mumbai, I

could not believe that with an effort of merely two months, I would have the good fortune of having a

glimpse of His Holiness Dr. Jayant Athavale. I was extremely delighted and reached Sion Ashram with

her. While leaving for the Ashram, she had also said that it could also be that His Holiness might be

busy and that I might have to be satisfied with just a glimpse of Him and I might not receive Hisguidance on spirituality. I was prepared even for that. However, upon reaching the Ashram, I got an

inkling as if His Holiness Dr. Athavale too had been waiting for me. I still remember that day when I

had felt perturbed while watching the cricket match, as if somebody was calling me. This was very

much evident. The reality is that it was the moment of a meeting of the Guru and the disciple which

my Soul had sensed. Otherwise, I used to be so passionate about cricket that I could have never left it

    to go anywhere.

In the first glimpse and discourse, His Holiness familiarized me with His omnipresence through

many experiences. That day of my life was an unforgettable one and will continue to remain so.After I paid my obeisance, His first question was Today is India-Pakistan cricket match, so how did

you come here? It was as if someone had told Him that I was extremely addicted to cricket.

He then continued Till India becomes potent in spirituality, it will always have to face defeat

in every sphere of activity. That day India lost that match. This we came to know when we came out

of the Ashram, through a person who was listening to the match commentary over the radio.

This incident also brought an important change in my life. That day onwards, I completely lost

interest in cricket. The reality is that just with a mere glance, a saint destroys all the unnecessary

impressions on our minds. This happens due to the divine consciousness emitted by them. I got this

inkling. I was acutely aware that I was wasting the crucial time of my life, but I was not being able to

rid myself of this habit, but just a sentence of my Shreeguru achieved this miracle.

He read all my thoughts and expressing it .

That day, I was blessed of haiving His discourse for 45 minutes and during this time, He

Himself offered refreshments to me, which contained sweets too. I love sweets. Thus, I was just

thinking of eating the sweets towards the very end, when He said smilingly Like me, you also have

a sweet tooth, right? I began to smile. While eating the refreshments, a thought crossed my mind

that as I have received the Prasaad from the hands of a saint, I must partake some of it, at home

too. At that very moment, He said You must eat the whole of it, I will give you more sweets to take

home. Hearing Him speak thus, I started smiling again and consumed the entire Prasaad in the

plate. That day, it seemed, as if He was reading all the thoughts crossing my mind. The saints always

remain in a state of bliss, free of thoughts. Thus, the thoughts of the person in front of them are

    easily mirrored in their minds.

He blessed me to serve the divine instead of the corrupt politicians !

After this, He asked me as to what I wanted to do in future. I said that I wanted to become an

IAS officer and serve society. His immediate response was It is then good that you have not

become an IAS officer till now. Otherwise, you would have had to work with so many corrupt

politicians. I aspired for IAS for a particular reason. There had been rampant corruption in the

announcement of results during my Class XII board examinations.

Owing to large-scale corruption in Bihar Inter Council, the answer-sheets of students had not

been evaluated and all the students had been awarded marks randomly. As a result, I had scored 58%

marks. Due to the blessings ofMa (Goddess) Saraswati, I always used to score above 90% marks.

Thus, this low marks literally shook me up deep inside and that very day I had made up my mind to

become an administrative officer and bring about a systemic change and eradicate corruption.

I cannot tolerate corrupt people one bit. My Shree Guru had a premonition of this. But when

    He said that It is good that you have not become an IAS officer till now;

it then struck me that I had been encountering hurdles in realizing my goal. Perhaps, my Guru

had been preventing me from entering the illusionary world. The Guru knows what is most suitable

for the disciple. Hence, before entering a disciples gross life, they keep an eye on each and every

important act of the disciple. There was some magic in this sentence. From that day on, the idea of

taking the IAS exam was completely off my mind.

I, who at one point of time used to dream of serving the government of maya (illusion), fromthat day onwards, have stayed on at the feet of His Holiness doing practice for self upliftment and

social welfare, thus got inspired to serve the Supreme government. To this day, I consider this to be

my good fortune. That day, for the first time, I felt that I had met a personality who can understand

my ability and inner feelings, and I can feel the experience of this clearly even today.

He had a complete premonition of my gross and subtle abilities. He had made me an associate

in the subtle war that raged between the years 2000 and 2010. This subtle war will have an

unprecedented contribution in bringing about a complete systemic change. I was thinking of bringing

about a change in the system through the gross medium, but my Guru took my service beyond that.

What is delightful is that I got an inkling of this only after 2010, when the subtle war ended. The

Guru knows what kind of service would be the best for the spiritual progress of the disciple.

    10. Why is it so in Vedic Sanatan Dharma?

    (i) Why is Gangajal(holy water of the Ganga river) and Tulsi Dal (a bunch ofTulsi orBasilleaves) put into the mouth of a dead body?

Impure vibrations are let out from the mouth of a dead person, due to which negative energiesare attracted towards the dead body and try to take it under their control. By pouring Gangajaland

putting Tulsi Dalinto the mouth of a dead person, the pure vibrations get attracted towards the dead

body and they destroy the impure vibrations. In fact, we should close the ears and nose of a dead

person with Tulsi Dal, rather than with cotton balls.

(ii) Why should electric cremation not be conducted?Man-made, impure electric crematorium made of iron and the electric currents emanating are

Chaitanyaheen (devoid of divine consciousness). That is why during an electric cremation, Rajo-Tamo

vibrations are released from the body of a dead person and the atmosphere is polluted. For this

reason, electric cremation does not allow the person the benefit of progressing and gaining Gati. The

final rites must be done properly, as per the laid down rules and procedure, amidst chanting of

Mantras, whereby the dead person gains Gati. Thus, the dead body must be burnt amidst the

    chanting ofMantras.

(iii) Why should women not go to a cremation ground?Compared to men, the amount of Rajogun (spiritually impure vibrations) is higher in women.

Due to increased Rajogun, women are more emotional, as compared to men. In the cremation

ground, troublesome vibrations can afflict, or obstruct them. Hence, women should also not perform

    the last rites.

Why are children below one year of age are not cremated, but buried after death? After cremation, why are circumambulations taken with water draining from an earthen pot? Why one should not allow the smoke from the pyre to touch ones body? What to do when a person dies? Why is a dead person laid down straight upon the back and the thumbs of his feet tied

    together?
