Market UpdateThe coming year will see the development and testing
sector driven by moves to newer and more advanced
technology, as skills such as Angular continue to grow in
popularity. The continued need for companies to become
cloud enabled is shifting the focus towards application
development and modernization with new software delivery
models, programming languages and development
methodologies. The continuing explosion of the ‘IoT” and
multi-device platforms is also driving a strong trend towards
mobile application development and open source software.
Cost is a major driver, as is agility, flexibility and speed to
deploy new applications, all of which are influencing market
trends. These industry moves will increase competition for
employers and inevitably, salaries.
In line with these trends there is demand for professionals
with AngularJS, Xamarin, mobile-first responsive
development, cloud computing and AWS skills. On the
soft skills side, cultural fit remains important as does
flexibility from candidates in terms of broader skillsets
and changing roles. Test Analysts are in demand across
the board, especially for digital projects within the media,
telecommunications and banking industries. In particular,
there is increased need for strong Automation Testers with
excellent communication skills
Candidates are in high demand and good candidates
are receiving multiple offers which has afforded them the
opportunity to pick and choose the type of role they want
in an unprecedented way. Employers in turn are adding
multiple technologies to the skill sets they require from
candidates. Roles have changed and clients are now
asking for full stack developers than just front-end or back-
end developers. Digital and Web Application Test Analysts
are also being taken off the market quickly and talent is
running short.
Salaries will continue to increase as skill shortages and
competition for good candidates increases, however this
isn’t sustainable and will plateau once the gap in the market
decreases across high-demand roles.
Employers are slow to react to the changing marketplace
and, as such, are losing out on candidates. As the
technology stack for companies continues to grow, so
does their need for candidates to have broader skillets of
varying technologies that candidates historically wouldn’t
paired together. This, combined with a general lack of
digital skills in the Australian market has led to significant
skills shortages and resulted in a candidate driven market.
Employers need to keep this in mind and move quickly
to secure the candidates they want by having a faster
recruitment process. Job seekers have also become a
lot more savvy when it comes to choosing their employer.
Hiring managers need to develop strong marketing
strategies for candidate attraction and retention, such as
opportunities for training, career growth and development,
broader opportunities for candidates to move across
the business and stay engaged, and a strong focus on
company culture and benefits.
On the job seeker side, employers are increasingly looking
for candidates with a demonstrated passion for technology
who are going to embrace and keep up with the fast-paced
evolution of their technology landscape. Keeping up-to-date
with new technologies is imperative and if you’re attending
meet-ups, writing code on GitHub, have built an app or
website, have a portfolio or have been building/learning/
playing with new technologies on the side, then showcase
this on your CV to stand out! On the testing side, we advise
job seekers to skill up in digital/web applications testing
where possible and develop strong business facing skills.
