Vernon F. DucoteState Deputy

[email protected]

Bishop Ronald HerzogState Chaplain

[email protected]

What a wonderful first couple ofmonths it has been as your State Deputy.I have been traveling throughout thestate and have attended many functions. It is great to be out and about with thecouncils and members throughout thestate and sharing many wonderful meals(and the fellowship that goes along withthem).

In July, we got off to a great startwith our two KCLS meetings where wepresented leadership of the Councilswith valuable information regardingmembership and our upcoming pro-grams this year. I’d like to thank all thatattended to receive this informationabout how to be successful in both ofthese aspects this year. If you didn’tattend this year or in recent years, I hopeyou attend the next one to see how thingshave changed from past KCLSs.

In early August, I, the delegatesfor the state, the State Officers, andnumerous other brother Knights andtheir wives attended the Supreme Con-vention which was in Orlando this year.As always, the Louisiana hospitalityroom was quite the popular one withattendees from across the world ascould be surmised by the line down thehotel’s hallway. I encourage all to at-tend a Supreme Convention one dayand share in the experience.

We are off to a good start regard-ing membership. At this time, we arenumber seven in the world regardingmembership intake. I know, that withyour hard work regarding recruiting newmembers, we will soon be number one!We all have a responsibility to recruitnew members and to ensure that eachand every practical Catholic male hasthe opportunity to experience this greatorganization and to contribute to all ofits works. After recruiting, we need toensure this new prospect makes it to aFirst degree and then, subsequently, aSecond and Third degree. These de-grees schedules can be found on ourstate website.

Our state programs have startedwith a bang this year. Our horseshoetournament brought in 131 participants. Our golf and nine ball tournaments arejust around the corner and we hope tohave a large number of participants atthose at well. I will see many of youthere!

I wish each Council participatingin the Mental Disability Fund success intheir fundraising efforts. I am alwaysamazed by the amount of money raisedand contributed to so many in needthroughout the state. I encourage allcouncils to consider contributing part oftheir funds raised to St. Mary’s Resi-dential Training Center.

I also encourage everyone to readthe YEP article found in this newsletter. We have recently been in decline eachyear regarding the contributions com-ing into the State Council. These fundsare needed in order to put on your stateyouth programs. As a matter of fact,we had to cut some dollars from a num-ber of programs this year due to thefunds received last year being less thanwhat was expected. If you have not

The fraternal year is well under-way. Hopefully, your Council has manyactivities already planned or underway.Continue to recruit new members to ourOrder.

The month of October has twovery special emphases. It is the monthof the Holy Rosary, and this year marksthe 800th anniversary of this great giftto the Church. Why not sponsor a spe-cial event in your parish to commemo-rate this anniversary! This is also Re-spect Life month. We continue to pro-mote the dignity of every human life.

The month of November invitesus to remember those who have gonebefore us. Many councils schedule aMass for deceased brothers. Pleaseconsider this, if you have not alreadydone so.

On a personal note: I want tothank all of you for prayers and sup-port during my recovery. I am now ableto resume most of my responsibilities.Recently I had the honor of being Prin-cipal Celebrant at the Installation Massof our new 4th Degree Master at St.Luke Parish in Slidell. I look forwardto joining the leaders of our Order inSulphur for the winter meeting.

May the Lord bless our Orderand all our brother Knights and theirfamilies!

Vivat Jesus!

School is back in session and thechildren are settling into the school yearroutines. Part of that routine is extra-curricular activities both at school andat home. The Knights of Columbusyouth programs are part of those ac-tivities as well. At the local council levelall the way up to Supreme our youthprograms are second to none. Againthis year will support many programsat the State Level.

A donation to the YEP enables ourfuture to look brighter. Every one of thefollowing programs helps us in our jour-ney as Knights of Columbus to obtainthe vision that we carry forth as Knightsof Columbus members. The vision ofcharity, fraternalism, patriotism, unity.By aiding the youth of our state we setforth the next generation of Catholicmen and women making this world abetter place.

Did your Council schedule or havea MDF Fund Raiser? If so, Thank you!

If your council has not already se-lected their beneficiary, now is the timeto select one. I greatly recommendsomeone from your Council to take timeto visit these beautiful people. It willmake all the difference in making yourCouncil’s fund drive a success. YourCouncil should look into what your ben-eficiary does with the funds given tothem. Ask that they let you know forwhat the funds are being used and theninform your council membership. Pub-lish your beneficiary donations in yourcouncil’s news letter and local newspa-pers.

Please consider St. Mary’s Resi-dential Training school as your benefi-ciary. The St. Mary’s mission is to pro-vide every person the opportunity to de-velop to his or her potential, intellectu-ally, spiritually, mentally, physically, vo-cationally and socially. St Mary’s helpeach of the 202 children and youngadults, from all over the State of Louisi-ana, realize greater possibilities and at-tain higher levels of performance. Addall, or a percent, of the total amount ofthe “Tootsie Roll” money received orfrom a special council fundraiser on theMDF Financial Statement Report Form.Note: at the bottom of the StatementForm, there is a line item listing St.Mary’s Residential Training School.

As the 2014-2015 Athletic Cam-paign kicks off, I would like to recog-nize serveral individuals who havestepped up, to make our fall competi-tion, great Knights of Columbus events.

Our 66th Annual State Softballtournament was hosted by Msgr.Teurlings Council 3202, Lafayette.Kudos to Grand Knight Phillip Parkerand the brothers of 3202. Your contin-ued support of our softball event insuresits continued success. More importantly,my extreme gratitude to Myles Millerfor stepping up to serve as TournamentDirector once again. His leadership andpersonal touch make this KC event agreat KC event!

Ralph Comeaux and the brothersof Plaquemine Council 970 went theextra mile to make our State Horseshoetournament an event brothers plan toattend each year. 970’s hospitality, andtheir venue make this another highlyparticipated KC event.

Tyler Kuhn and the staff of GrayPlantation GC served as hosts of our67th Annual State Golf Tournament.Brothers from throughout the state con-tinue to rave about the great facility pro-vided for this KC State event.

Plan. Promote. Participate. Nextup is the Nine Ball Tournament! continued on page 8

Pelican Park, Carencro, LA...Thisevent began in 1948 and I am veryproud to be a part of it again this year,66 years later. Only 9 teams partici-pated this year. The tournament beganand ended while the sun was in the sky.

In an attempt to revitalize the soft-ball championship, the event was for-matted into a Competitive and Recre-ational event. The new divisions al-lowed 5 homeruns in competitive, andzero homeruns in recreational. The Co-Ed division was unchanged.

The Co-Ed Division saw only onecouncil participating, as Council 4791-Father Fontaine from Estherwood, en-tered two teams. Council 4791 playeda best, 2 out of 3 for the championship.I would like to say THANK YOU tothem for making the decision to keepthe Co-Ed Division alive!

The new Recreational divisionshowed great fraternalism having 4teams and all getting along for the funof the game. The teams also showedthat age does not matter. Whether youhave been a knight for only 3 years orfor 30 years, this division was fun andeveryone enjoyed there time on thefield. The councils who participatedwere, 3054 – Msgr. Carrol A. Badeauxfrom Lockport, 7557 – Sacred Heartfrom Broussard, 10455- Most BlessedSacrament from Baton Rouge & tak-ing home the top honor was 12285 –St Bridget from Schriever.

With the new Competitive Divi-sion on board, the home runs allowedwent up by 2, from the previous years.Did this make a difference? With 3teams in this bracket only 1 team trulyhit the ball over the fence. This com-petitive division was truly about the cali-ber of softball being played. The speedand athleticism of the participating teamsare the determining factors at this levelof play. based out of Vacherie. In a three-teambracket Vacherie was the top seed andplayed only two games to take homeCompetitive Division honors.

Even with the declining participa-tion, Msgr. WJ Teurlings, Host Coun-cil, will always be dedicated to keepthis event on the top of its game. Wehope with the new divisions, this topnotched sporting event will regain thenumber of councils that wish to par-ticipate.

As I reflect on my first sixty daysas your Squires Chairman, I’ve real-ized there is not enough time in a day. Some would say that I have some loftygoals for the Squires program. I wastaught to have a passion for your pur-pose; that whatever you do in life, al-ways plan and prepare. Do everythingto the best of your ability, outworkeveryone, and leave it better than youfound it. The last sixty days have beenvery exciting and very informative forour team. We reached the goals thatwere set for the first sixty days. The state circle has been accessible andaccountable. We have increasedawareness and enthusiasm about theprogram. We are more organized tohandle the workload that comes with

becoming a more effective State Circleand improving our communication withcouncils and circles statewide. Our StateOfficers have been accountable startingwith our leader, State Chief SquireMathew Massey. I am also very pleasedwith our State Committeemen. I appre-ciate their acceptance of extra duties inservice to the Squires and the TEAM. Iwant to thank the Louisiana Knights ofColumbus State Council Officers for alltheir support and encouragement. OurState Deputy Vernon Ducote’s motto,“stronger together” epitomizes what ourSquires family is all about. We are FAM-ILY and we are a TEAM! (TogetherEveryone Achieves More).

Still, we can do better and we mustbecause our children’s future dependson it. Their Knighthood is at stake!Squires becoming Knights is essential tothe success of the order. Many Knightsfail to grasp the importance of this tran-sition. We must continue to make thepoint that the Squires program is para-mount to the success and preservationof the Knights of Columbus.

I would be remiss in acknowledg-ing successes without also looking atmissed opportunities. I am making acommitment to do better and I am chal-lenging everyone on my TEAM to dobetter as well. Joaquin Bacardi oncesaid, “We should value our impact notby its present value but by its futurevalue.” We have an extraordinary op-portunity to assist Squires to becomemembers of the Knights of Columbus. We can only do that through hard workand consistent effort. Remember, theboys are watching everything we do.They are constantly learning and evolv-ing. Let’s be the best example of whatKnighthood is all about. We create ourfuture by doing God’s Work and serv-ing others because we are God’s Work!

We are doing a fantastic job brin-ing in new members into our Jurisdictionso far this year. We are as of the lastreport I have received, ranked number9 in the Order with 385 members thatgives us an intake of 27.21% of our totalintake of 1415. This is our biggest growthfor the first 3 months in 3 years. Greatjob to those Councils that recruited atleast one new member! Keep those newmembers coming in and help us makeour Order “Stronger Together” as wefight to win the Final Round of DivisionFinals of W.S.O.M. against Florida.

With that being said, let’s do a re-ality check on why we need you to con-tinue to work hard. We have a negative20 for the year of net members with33108 members. That means we lostmore members than we took in so farthis year. That comes from suspensions, transfer out of state, or death and not

bringing in enough new members to re-place those members. Think about thisstaggering number, we have 167 Coun-cils that has not recruited one new mem-ber. Are we recruiting “One New Mem-ber, Per Council, and Per Month”? Arewe trying to improve our Councils andour Order with new members? Thinkabout all of the good that we can do withall these new members. Think aboutdoubling our numbers, with just gettingthat one new member per Council.

We are bringing in those new mem-bers and filling those Form 100’s andtaking them to a 1st Degree. GrandKnights and Financial Secretaries pleasereview those forms before you bring theCandidate to their 1st Degree. Why yousay? I am glad you asked! Missing sig-natures, missing contact information, missing Council numbers, missing dates, and so on with these mistakes that aremade on the Form 100. If you are re-viewing the form with the admissioncommittee and completely and properlyfilling it out, we won’t have a problem atSupreme. If not, they won’t put it in thesystem at Supreme causing delays. Weneed those forms to be done correctlyfor the sake of the new members andmore for their families. If something hap-pens to the member and the form is notat Supreme, the family won’t get thebenefits that’s due to them. Those ben-efits are free to our members and shouldbe promoted when recruiting. Pleasemake it a point to promote and committo these services we offer to these new

Brother Knights.Retention is our biggest obstacle to

overcome in our Councils. It is a con-stant battle to keep our members in ourCouncils through dues and keeping themactive. If your Council is not active, youwon’t keep members from leaving. Youare creating an early retirement for yourCouncil to close up somewhere in thenear future. An active Council uses pro-grams, whether it is their own, or stateprograms to keep their members activeand involved. Look at the spread sheeton Council membership and look at theaccolades they receive at our State Con-vention; see why they go together. So,we won’t lose any more active memberif we keep them busy? Not always!

What about the guy that started outbeing active, then suddenly stoppedshowing up. What about the guy thatmade a meeting and no one introducedhim to the Council or other BrotherKnights? Did the proposer just sign theForm 100 to get the points, or does hehelp the new member? We are workingon a “Mentor Program” that will giveCouncils the tools they need to help keepall members. You will have active mem-bers working with new members and“mentor” them about the Knights andtheir Council. This is a two for one spe-cial for your Council. How? It gives bothnew and old members a way of buildinga fraternal relationship and keep theCouncil active. This is a way to becomea Star Council by recruiting, be an ac-tive in your Council, and fill out the pa-per work, and reap the rewards.

In closing, I hope each Council hastheir Church Drive materials, date andtime, and 1st Degree lined up for thismonth. I know that each of you can andwill be successful in finding those newmembers and their families and helpingus build a better Church, Community, andCouncil in your town. Continue to do thework of the Venerable Fr. Michael J.McGivney and help the widows and or-phans in our world today and promotethe good work of the Lord our God.

Vivat Jesus!
