Painter, sculptor, designer… Hans Hopfer designed sofas that are, for many, the indisputable “signature” of Roche Bobois’ collections.
In the 1970s, Hopfer’s innovative informal approach to comfort had a profound in� uence on the way people furnished and arranged their living space.
In 1971, he created the Mah�Jong, a sofa based on total freedom of function and form. From a starting point of three basic elements that can be set at angles or overlaid, the Mah Jong allows limitless options of composition.
It can be armchair, sofa, lounge chair or bed; a space in which to rest, to play or to lounge. It encourages experimentation and breaks the rules of formal living, re� ecting the non-conformist era in which it was born.
Avant-garde when � rst created, iconic today, “dressed” by Missoni Home, Jean Paul Gaultier and Sonia Rykiel Maison, this “free form” modular seating is the reference point for fully modular creative design.

elementos sencillos, yuxtapuestos o
superpuestos, el Mah Jong permite

The French couturier has placed his
witty and wonderfully creative stamp
on the Mah�Jong, “dressing” the design
in both his distinctive striped sailor-
style costume and in an upholstery
version inspired by the distinctive
motifs of his Haute Couture fashion
collections such as tattoos and other
“poetic” graphics. His creativity,
elegance and sophistication break the
rules of convention, in much the same
way that Hans�Hopfer did back in 1971
when he designed the Mah�Jong.

y talento sus propios códigos para

The Mah�Jong is handmade in a
dedicated workshop in Italy using
processes and techniques similar
to those of the “Haute Couture”
fashion industry.
Each component is individually
hand-stitched using a method similar
to that of mattress-making, and the
utmost attention is paid to detailing.
By virtue of the exclusive fabrics used
to upholster it and the unique nature
of each composition, every Mah�Jong
composition becomes a one-of-a-kind
creation.

The Mah�Jong was created to provide
freedom of form and function.
By encouraging people to arrange
the elements as suits them best,
it could change the landscape of
the living room, offering a whole new
approach to the way we view and
arrange the spaces in which we live.
The composition options are almost
limitless, giving one the opportunity
to completely reorganise one’s living
space, thereby rede� ning the original
meaning of the term “sofa”.
The 3 basic elements of the Mah�Jong
can be stacked, aligned with each
other and grouped as one wishes.
Seat cushion, straight back
or corner… one can play with
the shape and the height to create
the composition desired: corner sofa,
straight sofa, armless sofa or day bed.
