Introduction Trace Contamination Measurement

Long-term efficient power generation requires careful surveillance to guard against corrosive and depositing conditions and to assure conformance with EPRI, VGB or other guidelines.

Our sodium and silica analyzers pro-vide highly sensitive monitoring of steam quality to prevent corrosion and deposition on turbines. These analyz-ers are also excellent for detecting con-denser leaks and condensate polisher breakthroughs.

Sodium AnalyzersThe Thornton 2300Na and 2301Na Sodium Analyzers offer a new design for a traditional measurement for pure water treatment and power cycle chem-istry monitoring, providing assurance of water purity to minimize corrosion. Early detection of trace contamination is enabled with minimal operator supervi-sion. The sample passes through an overflow assembly that assures precise pressure and flow regulation. The flow-rate is set by a needle valve and rota-meter at only 40 mL/min, saving pure water and reagent. DIPA vapor diffuses into the sample without contamination through gas-permeable tubing. The reagent raises the pH of the sample to approximately 11 pH to enable the ion-selective electrode to respond only to sodium ion concentration. The 2301Na Analyzer enables use of either DIPA or Ammonium hydroxide for this purpose. The sample passes through the sodium sensor flow tube and into

the larger flow chamber containing a combination probe including the refer-ence electrode, a pH electrode and temperature compensator. The pH measurement is always displayed, providing in-process confirmation that the correct amount of reagent has been added to the sample. The reference and temperature compensator are shared with the sodium measurement. The sample then passes to drain. Electrodes incorporate Intelligent Sen-sor Management™ capability which stores all identification, calibration, and real-time predictive maintenance data within the sensor.

2800Si Silica AnalyzerThe Thornton 2800Si Silica Anaylzer is a reliable on-line instrument designed specifically for pure water treatment and power cycle chemistry monitoring. This Analyzer provides assurance of water purity to optimize ion exchange production of pure water and to minimize silica deposition in turbines. Early detection of trace contamina-tion is enabled with minimal operator supervision. The analyzer allows sample to pass through an overflow assembly ensuring that a fresh sample is available to start each measure-ment cycle. A rinse period purges the previous sample from the reaction/measurement chamber and fills it with the fresh sample. The measurement is zeroed. Then, reagents are metered in and reaction time allowed to produce a color change proportional to silica concentration. Where phosphates are present, an additional reagent is included to minimize interference. The measurement is made, the display and outputs are updated and the cycle repeats. The operator can configure the measurement interval to optimize the tradeoff of response time vs. rea-gent consumption. The 2800Si con-forms to ASTM Test Method D7126.
