Gender Roles

• Gender stereotype- attributes perceived to be typical for men and women; assumptions due to divisions of labor in the past

• Today, many people say the gender gap is narrower.• Gender roles have become less common in contemporary

American society. • But, we are still influenced by our parents, peers, significant

other, media.• They teach us to conform, and there is this pressure to act a

certain way (be the ideal wife or be the perfect husband).

• Aspire to be a certain person

• Have the best wedding, be the best cook, throw the best parties

• We’re preparing for that by storing all of our interests/aspirations
