Hello fellow RMD Members. I hope this version of our division newsletter finds you busy and your business prosperous.

Over the last quarter your RMD board has been very busy and energized in preparation for a very busy 2014. We have our Design Competition, TOPCON and ANTEC coming in 2014. These are activities that are core to fulfilling our mission.

• The RMD a parts design contest is now open to commercial and academic entries. The winners will then feed into the SPE part design competition. • The RMD Technical committee has begun the call for papers for the 2014 ANTEC. We would like to have as many, if not more, presenters as 2013.

• RMD TOPCON in June 2014 is underway. The committee is always looking for volunteers as there are many jobs to be completed to allow things to run smoothly, as they have in the past.

• The RMD website is currently being updated and renewed. This is an ongoing procedure that will be responsive to suggestions and feedback. Please feel free to offer pictures and feedback for this proc-ess.

There are several ways for you to contribute to any or all of these activities both directly and indirectly. We would love to hear from you and have your support going into the New Year. Please be on the look-out for email blasts containing pertinent information on each event.

I want to wish you, your work and personal families the very best for the Holidays and a prosperous New Year.

1. What software can I use? Any software that converts to a format that the reviewers can open and manipulate by rotating and zooming is permitted.

2. What file format is acceptable? IGES, STEP and PDF are acceptable. Your drawing must be easily convertible to a PDF format. You can sub-mit a video of your product if you have a prototype or the product is commercial.

3. What are the dimensions I can have for my 2D drawing? There are standard sizes for 2D drawings, "A" (8 1/2" x 11"), "B" (11" x 17"), "C" (17" x 22"), "D" (22" x34"), "E" (34' X 44")

4. What are the competition criteria? Originality – is this product new, innovative or solve an ongoing problem? Process-ability – can this product be easily process by conventional rotational molding methods? Growth Potential – what is the market potential for your design, more potential = more points? Beauty and Visual Appeal – is the product visually appealing even if it is a basic application? Tool Building Compatibility – can a rotational molding tool be built to produce this product? Use of Appropriate Materials – what materials are called out on my design? Rotational molding materials are essential to earn points in this category. Sustainability – how effectively does this product enable efficient use of energy? Environmental Impact – how well does this product support a healthy environment?

Fire damages South Carolina Rotomolder By: Jeremy Carroll, Plastics News November 27, 2013

Two buildings and raw materials were destroyed in a fire at the Dixie Poly Drum Corp. in Yemassee, S.C., but company officials hope to restart production on a limited basis soon.

The fire was well involved when emergency responders arrived on the scene at 11 p.m. on Nov. 22, and firefighters from five departments responded to help battle the blaze, according to local reports. No injuries were reported.

“Two two-story buildings were heavily damaged in the fire,” according to a statement from Colleton County Fire Department, which helped respond to the fire.

Pete Hamaker, owner and CEO of the rotational molder could not be reached for comment, but told WTOC-11 News that while buildings, equipment and material were destroyed by the fire, the company’s molds were salvaged.

WSAV-TV reported that workers from the facility were help-ing clean up the site, which is about 60 miles southwest of Charleston, S.C.

“We are going to be running production on a limited basis, until we can get new equipment, new buildings,” Hamaker told the news station.

He said the company plans to run shifts around the clock to catch up on orders.

The Dixie Poly Drum Facebook page had several well-wishes from those in the community and the company was posting updates of news stories along with pictures at the site. Among the pictures included nearly 40 workers stand-ing in front of a damaged building.

The company also posted a message, saying they “would like to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers. And a big thank you to all the fire personnel for their services!”

The company had estimated sales of $5 million in 2012, putting the company as the 68th largest rotational molder in Plastics News’ annual report published earlier this year. The company makes a variety of products including drums, tote boxes, recycling containers, guard rails, step stools and big plastic barriers, among other items. Glenn Beall, Distinguished Service Member Award

Glenn Beall was selected as the PPA 2013 Distinguished Ser-vice Member and received this award at The Turning Stone Resort on during the Fall Meeting. Steve Hershfield, President of PPA, presented Glenn with the award. In his remarks, Steve noted that the Distinguished Service Member Award recognizes an individual for exemplifying the objectives of the Plastics Pioneers Association. Steve cited sev-eral of Glenn’s contributions to the PPA and the plastics indus-try including:

• Providing meaningful support to Injection Molding, Rotational Molding, Thermoforming, and Mold Making and Design

• Fostering relationships between multiple organizations creating an industry alliance to develop and promote education within the Plastics Industry as a whole

• Collecting artifacts and preserving the history of the Plastics Industry • Establishing the Glenn and Patsy Beall PPA Reading Room at the Plastics Project and Virtual Museum at Syra-

cuse University

Steve stated that Glenn’s exemplification of the objectives, and continued support, of the Plastics Pioneers Association truly quali-fies him for the award of Distinguished Service Member. In his remarks, Glenn stated that a “simple thank you doesn’t rise to the occasion” of accepting the Pioneer’s highest award. He reit-erated that he was “just plain lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to meet the right people”. Glenn’s “luck” included being born at a time when the plastics industry experienced explo-sive growth in the 1950s, 60, and 70s; convincing his high school sweetheart to marry him 60 years ago when he was a flat broke college student; meeting a fellow student who had worked in the plastics industry and being convinced to pursue plastics as a ca-reer; finding plastics-related work after graduation at General Elec-tric and Abbott Laboratories before leaving Abbott to start his own plastic product design and development com-pany in 1968; being inducted into PPA in 1984 and meeting giants of the plastics industry; and meeting Harry

Greenwald who knew of the Special Collection Group at Syracuse University, the connection that led to the estab-lishment of the Plastics Pioneers Reading Room. Glenn de-clared that it was Patsy, not him, who first came up with the idea of financing the remodeling of the room and purchas-ing the rights to the Reading Room in perpetuity. Because the university has “decided that it is their program, this means that the collection, the website, and the Reading Room will survive and prosper long after all of us are gone.” In closing, Glenn thanked “Patsy for always being there and the Pioneers for making it possible for him to socialize with the titans of the plastics industry for the past 30 years.” Submitted by Larry Schneider, Schneider Plastics, Inc.

Promens to make major investments in China, Asia By: Steve Toloken, Plastics News December 13, 2013

Plastics processor Promens hf is speeding up its expansion into China and launching a broader push into Asia that will see it set up several factories there in the next few years, the company’s top executive in the region said.

The Kópavogur, Iceland-based company dedicated its first China factory on Nov. 30 and will be doubling its manufac-turing space there next year, two years ahead of its initial plans, to meet growing demand, said Promens Asia Manag-ing Director Bjarki Gardarsson.

The previously undisclosed Asian expansion is part of a broad push Promens is making in emerging economies includ-ing China, India, Russia, South America and Turkey, as it wants to broaden beyond its mainly European manufacturing platform now, Gardarsson said in a Dec. 10 telephone interview with Plastics News.

The company has 43 factories worldwide, but only two in Asia, at the newly opened facility in Taicang, Jiangsu prov-ince, and in Ahmedabad, India.

It plans to set up at least three more factories in China, and two elsewhere in Asia, in the next several years, he said. “We are really expecting to see a strong footprint of Promens in Asia,” Gardarsson said. “I would expect to see us in several locations in China and Asia in coming years.”

Promens employs 3,800 and said it is the world’s largest rotational molder, as well as using other manufacturing proc-esses like injection molding and blow molding.

It said it expects sales this year of 600 million euros ($826.0 million), and last month announced plans for an initial public offering to fund further growth, including in South America and Asia.

Setting up the facility in China has opened doors, Gardarsson said, because its global customer base in industries like automotive and packaging is increasingly looking for suppliers worldwide.

“Now that we have a facility [in China] and can look customers in the eye and promise delivery times and production, we are seeing strong interest from our customers,” he said.

Promens first announced the China facility in April, and at the time planned to double it within three years. But it will double the Taicang factory’s manufacturing footprint to 5,000 square meters within one year, or two years faster than its initial plans, Gardarsson said.

He said the company plans to invest another 6 million to 10 million euros in Taicang in those two years. It could add about one rotomolding machine a year for the next half-decade, and will likely add 10 molding machines and 60 em-ployees in Taicang in the next three years, he said.

Taicang opened last month as a 3 million euro investment with 20 employees. It will initially manufacture insulated tubs for the food industry, but will expand into automotive, medical and personal care sectors. It plans to add automotive business there in early 2014 and add capabilities for injection and blow molding by the end of next year, he said.

“The new Promens production facility in Taicang represents a very large step in our strategy to leverage our strong customer relationships in rapidly growing economies, where plastics will play an important role in optimizing supply chains, increase food safety and meet the needs of a growing middle class,” said CEO Jakob Sigurdsson, in a state-ment.
