General Programme 2021

General Secretary

Dear confreres,

Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

With joy, I present to you the General Programme of 2021. I take this opportunity, first of all, to wish you a new year of peace and serenity, free from the tensions of the Coronavirus. In these brief preliminary lines, I would like to share with you a short message that will make us reflect.

Jonathan Edwards, a Native American preacher, theologian, and missionary has published a short essay in December 1734, named The Preciousness of Time and The Importance of Redeeming It. In this work, he mentions, why time is precious.

First of all, according to his Christian perspective, time is precious because eternity depends on it. That means a happy or miserable eternity depends on how we spend the time today.

Secondly, time is precious because it is short. Those resources that are in abundance decrease in price, while those are scarce are deemed more valuable. So, time is one among the scarcest commodities of all period.

Thirdly, it is precious because we do not know how much we have. As the author wrote, "We know not how little of it remains, whether a year, or several years, or only a month, a week, or a day. We are every day uncertain whether that day will not be the last, or whether we are to have the whole day.”

Finally, time is precious because once it's gone, it's gone forever. It is a disposable good because when it has passed, it can no longer be recovered by anyone. It is a one-time-use commodity.

Therefore, let us use the present fruitfully, what we have now, and engage in the mission of Universal Sanctification with the vigilance of a faithful servant. The programmes, whether General or Personal, help us to use the time carefully and to enjoy the satisfaction of a meaningful life!

Convinced of this preciousness of time, it was also our founder who reminds us, as an ascetic practice, to "look at and use every minute of time as a very precious talent, strictly guarding against wasting it with idleness and inertia".
