Jazz is the offspring of the marriage of European harmony and African-American rhythms, nurtured and shaped by the musicality of American plantation life, the sanctified church, New Orleans street music and its subsequent travels up the Big River into urban centers. Related jazz styles of blues and swing have provided the basis, stepping stone and bridge to all forms of modern American popular music––from rock to rap, even country. The Society’s mission is to raise the level of awareness

of jazz by presenting live musical events and otherwise

preserving and perpetuating jazz as an important part

of America’s cultural heritage.

ed jazz artists in a two-day m

usical extravaganza.

Since its incorporation in 1997, the GJS has

offered jazz education programs at area schools,

sponsored jazz clinics, awarded music scholarships

and staged jazz festivals and concerts at variousvenues in Bay C

ounty. In addition, musicians

mem

bers of the Society have performed pro-bono

at vaious charities and benefits.

The GJS is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization.
