Childhood
• George was born July 6, 1946 in New Haven, Connec=cut.
• He went to San Janinto Junior High, Phillips Academy High School, and for college he went to Yale University.
Before Marriage
• He was accepted into the Texas Air Na=onal Guard.
• He trained to become a pilot and he completed his ac=ve duty service in 1970.
• He entered Harvard Business School and received a MBA in 1975.
• He was involved in oil and gas industries and started his own explora=on company.
Marriage
• He married Laura Welch on November 5, 1977 in the Glass Chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Midland, Texas.
• Laura was a former public school teacher and librarian. • She championed the causes of educa=on and literacy before and during her =me in the White House.
• As first lady, she helped create the Na=onal Book Fes=val and later founded the Laura Bush Founda=on to provide funding for America’s libraries.
AUer Marriage • George ran for the U.S. House of Representa=ves from Texas but lost to his democra=c appoint.
• Then he moved to Washington DC to work on his fathers 1988 presiden=al campaign.
• The following year he became an investor in the Texas rangers baseball tree team
• In 1994 he defeated democra=c incumbent Ann Richards to become governor of Texas. He was re-‐elected four years later.
• In the summer of 1999, Bush announced his candidacy for president and campaigned as “compassionate conserva=ve.”
President | 2001-‐2005 • Bush’s first term in the white house was dominated by the
9\11 terrorist a`ack • AUer that he signed the patriot act into law created the
cabinet level department of homeland security. • He won congressional approval if widespread tax-‐cut bills
and the Medicare prescrip=on drug coverage program for seniors; allocated billons of dollars to fight HIV/Aids around the world.
• Then he created the white house office of Faith Based and community ini=a=ves and the withdrew America’s support of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol which was signed by president Bill Clinton and was intended to combat worldwide global warming.
President | 2005-‐2009 • During Bush’s second term cri=cs said he had used misleading claims
about Iraq’s WHDs as a jus=fica=on for the invasion of the Middle Eastern Na=on.
• Addi=onally aUer hurricane Katrina deviated Americas gulf coast region in August 2005 resul=ng in 1800 deaths and billons of dollars in damages, the Bush Administra=on was widely cri=cized for its slow response to the disaster.
• He began his presidency with a federal budget surplus; however, factors such as the enormous cost of figh=ng two wars and the broad tax cuts led to annual budget defects star=ng in 2002 then in 2008 with America experiencing its worst finical crisis since the great depression, Congress passed a series of controversial Bush administra=on-‐sponsored plans to bail out the financial industry worth hundreds of billions in federal fund.
• Bush also lobbied unsuccessfully for a plan to replace social security with private re=rement savings accounts.
Children/Siblings
• George and Laura had twins on November 25,1981, which were named Barbara Peirce Bush and Jenna Welsh Bush (Hager).
• His siblings were Pauline Robinson Bush who died of leukemia, John Ellis Bush, Neil Mallon Bush, Marvin Peirce Bush, and Dorothy Walker Bush.
