Philosophy of Social Studies Social studies is concerned with the study of

people, their activities and relationships as

they interact with one another and with

their physical and socio-cultural

environment in an effort to meet their

needs. It is essentially the study of human

group experiences.

Social Studies is inter-disciplinary in nature

and draws its subject matter from a variety

of social sciences disciplines – History,

Geography, Sociology, Health and Family

Life and Caribbean Studies.

It promotes civic competence. It teaches

students to act upon the core values of

human dignity, equality, cooperation, self-

worth, national pride and self-discipline and

as such develop into responsible citizens.

Social Studies programmes provide

experiences through which students are

expected to gain knowledge and insights,

develop and practice a variety of skills and

attitudes as well as human understanding

and social responsibility.

Geography It is the study of the Earth’s

landscapes, peoples, places

and environments. It is about

the world in which we live. It

covers two disciplines: Human

Geography and the natural
