English 1101 State requirement(College Prep) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 12)

Offer seniors opportunity to take college classes. Emphasizes written composition with a review of the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation, and mechanics. Introduces a variety of research skills. A minimum verbal SAT score of 530 or an ACT score of 23 or higher.

English 1102 State requirement(College Prep) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 12)

Focuses on developing abilities as readers, scholars, and writing. Cultivates critical thinking skills, introduces more research and writing strategies, improves reading and writing at the college level. Addresses the processes of discovery, organization, investigation, and argument but centers on the analysis of texts. Prerequisite: English 1101.

Oral/Written Communication (Speech) Local requirement (College prep diploma) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12)

Focuses on thinking, organizing, and communicating; covers methods to develop and arrange ideas and information in written form for oral delivery; emphasizes writing skills and public speaking.

Debate Elective (College prep/Technical diploma) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12)

Debate focuses on developing skills for students to become: (1) in-depth researchers, (2) technical and persuasive writers, (3) effective communicators, and (4) perceptive listeners. Students gain an understanding of argumentation and persuasion theories and develop skills in logic and analysis. Students also research topics using a variety of literary and technical genre, organize research, write persuasive cases, and practice public speaking. Students participate in debate competitions. Must be approved by instructor

Drama/Acting Elective(College Prep and/or Technical diploma) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12)

Offers studies and experiences with drama. Must be approved by instructor

Journalism I Elective(College Prep and/or Technical diploma) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12)This course introduces students to the profession of journalism and media. The course includes an overview to print journalism generally and the transfer of that information to other forms of media, including the World Wide Web. Must be approved by instructor

Journalism II Elective(College Prep and/or Technical diploma) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12)Students will be involved in newspaper design and editing, research, and writing in the various genres. Must be approved by instructor: Prerequisite: Journalism I

MATHEMATICSScope and Sequence of Math Department

Mathematics I Meets State GPS requirement 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9)

This is the first in a sequence of mathematics courses designed to prepare students to enter college at the calculus level. It includes radical, polynomial and rational expressions, basic functions and their graphs, simple equations, fundamentals of proof, properties of polygons, coordinate geometry, sample statistics, and curve fitting.

Accelerated Mathematics I Meets State GPS requirement 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9)

This is the first in a sequence of mathematics courses designed to prepare students to take AB or BC Advanced Placement Calculus. It includes radical, polynomial and rational expressions; functions and their graphs; quadratic and radical equations; fundamentals of proof; properties of polygons, circles and spheres; coordinate geometry; sample statistics and curve fitting. Prerequisite: Successful completion of 8 th grade Accelerated Mathematics

Mathematics II Meets State GPS requirement 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 10)

This is the second in the sequence of secondary mathematics courses designed to ensure that students are college and work ready. This course requires students to represent and operate with complex numbers; use numerical, graphical, and algebraic techniques to explore quadratic, exponential, and piecewise functions and to solve quadratic, exponential and absolute value equations and inequalities; use algebraic models to represent and explore real phenomena; explore inverses of functions; use right triangle trigonometry to formulate and solve problems; discover, justify and apply properties of circles and spheres; use sample data to make informal inferences about population means and standard deviations; and fit curves to data and examine the issues related to curve fitting. It requires students to investigate and use rational functions; analyze and use trigonometric functions, their graphs, and their inverses; find areas of triangles using trigonometric relationships; use trigonometric identities to solve problems and verify equivalence statements; solve trigonometric equations analytically and with technology; Use complex numbers in trigonometric form; understand and use vectors; use sequences and series; Explore parametric representations of plane curves; explore polar equations; investigate the Central Limit theorem; and use margins of error and confidence intervals to make inferences from data. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Accelerated Mathematics II

Mathematics Support III Meets State GPS requirement 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 11)

Reviews material that will be on the Georgia High School Graduation Test. New material as well as concepts from Math I and Math II will be covered. This class may be taken along with Math III. (Open to juniors only) Credit for this class will end after the 2011-2012 school year.

Pre-algebra Meets State requirement (Technical diploma) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9)(Only for those who failed this course 2007-2009)

Integrates topics from arithmetic, geometry, algebra, measurement, and statistics in preparation for fundamentals of algebra. Uses patterns to model concepts such s number, variable, graph, relation and operations, and real-life applications and calculators to bridge the gap between concrete and abstract concepts and principles. Prerequisite: Grade 8 Mathematics.

Algebra II Meets State requirement (College prep and/or Tech. diploma) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 10-12)

Extends Algebra I skills. Uses calculators to assist problem solving. Emphasizes polynomial, exponential, a logarithmic functions and the extension of number to irrational and complex numbers. Covers graphing, systems of linear equations and inequalities and quadratics. Prerequisite: Algebra I

Algebra III Meets 4th Math Requirements for 11th or 12th 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 11-12)

Course is designed to meet the fourth math requirement for juniors or seniors in the CP program who will not take Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry, Pre-calculus, or Calculus. This course treats the following topics: range, domain, relations, functions, compositions, and inverses of functions, solving quadratic equations by several methods, solving systems of equations in both two and three variables, symmetry, exponential and logarithmic functions, direct, inverse and joint variation, trigonometric ratios, special triangles, and unit circle. Prerequisite: Algebra II.

Adv. Algebra and Trigonometry Meets State requirement (College prep and/or Tech. diploma) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 11-12)

Enhances algebra skills and introduces trigonometry with the assistance of calculators. Emphasizes real and complex numbers, matrices, probability, statistics, conic sections, functions, and problem solving. Stresses interrelationships of concepts. Prerequisite: Algebra II and Geometry

AP Statistics (STAT) Meets 4th Math Requirements for 11th or 12th 1st and 2nd semester ½ unit per semester (Grade 11 -12) Enables students to apply statistical methods in problem solving using data collected through experimentation, Computer simulations and various sources. Provides opportunities to model statistical methods, derive Probabilities, and make inferences. Presents applications of statistics in real-life situations and shows how misleading statistics could be better presented. Prerequisite: Algebra II

Pre-Calculus Elective (College prep diploma) 1st semester (Grade 12)

(Offered through Middle Georgia College) Preludes the core Pre-calculus topics of linear, quadratic, and polynomial functions, inequalities, inverse functions, application of functions, exponents, logarithms, analytical geometry, trigonometric applications, and introduction to calculus. Prerequisite: Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry.

Calculus Elective (College prep diploma)

2nd semester (Grade 12)(Offered through Middle Georgia College) Requires four years of college preparatory mathematical preparation, beginning with Algebra I. Includes functions, limits, and continuity; derivatives and integrals, and their applications. Prerequisite: Pre-calculus

SOCIAL SCIENCES(State requirement--6 semester credits)

Citizenship/Civics State required (College prep and/or Technical diploma) 1st or 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12)

Focuses on basic concepts and principles of the American political system, covers the structure and function of the American system of government, the roles and responsibilities of citizen participation in the political process, and the relationship of the individual to the law and legal system; stresses critical analysis of public issues. Integrates and reinforces social studies skills.

Investigates the principles of psychology, developmental psychology, heredity, and environmental aspects of psychology, learning theory, personality, intelligence, social disorders, and research methods used in the study of psychology.

Environmental Science Meets State requirement (Technical diploma) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 11-12) Science Reinforces science process skills, laboratory safety and reference/research skills through the study of many components of our environment, including the human impact on our planet. The curriculum is extensively performance, lab and field based. Instruction focuses on student data collection and analysis, interpretation of global data sets and interactive models, as well as investigations of careers related to environmental science. Chemistry, physics, mathematical, and technological concepts are also integrated throughout the course.

Transportation Logistical Operations(State requirement for endorsement--6 semesters)

Foundation of Transportation & Logistics Elective Meets State Endorsement for T&I 1st and/or 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9)

Introduces the theory and operations of gasoline engines; emphasizes safety procedures and how to identify and use hand tools. Includes repair and preventive maintenance on chassis, drive trains, electrical components, fuel systems, and brake systems. Covers three of the following areas: engine tune-up, the repair and maintenance of steering systems, suspension systems, air-conditioning systems, and in-drive train alignment. The areas covered in this course are safety, automotive maintenance, automotive business, mechanical measurements and measuring devices, automotive tools, basic maintenance, engine lubrication, and engine cooling systems. This class is taught in conjunction with the Heart of Georgia Technical College and can earn a student college credit in that area.

Chassis System & Design Elective Meets State Endorsement for T&I 1st and/or 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 10)

Chassis System & Design (Brake & Steering) is a course for the Transportation Logistical Support Pathway. The course will help students build a strong scientific knowledge base and develop skills related to vehicle chassis systems in the logistics and transportation sector. Mastery of these standards through project-based learning and leadership development activities of the Career and Technical Student Organizations will help prepare students with a competitive edge for the transportation logistics marketplace.

Electrical Systems Elective Meets State Endorsement for T&I 1st and/or 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 11-12)

The areas covered in this course are electricity, electrical circuits, properties of electricity, how to use a Digital Multi Meter, OHMs law, Basic Circuit Theory and Circuit Faults.

The course continues the development of skills in the areas of electrical and electronics, and engine performance. Course includes the development of skills in basic automotive maintenance, services and repair. Students are introduced to diagnosis of systems and concerns, causes and correction of problems. Critical thinking skills and shop safety are emphasized. Course includes applied academics of math, science and language arts. Minimum performance requirements for this course are based on successful completion according to the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation Automotive Program Standards. (NATEF)

Applied Design (Construction) Elective Meets State Endorsement for T&I 1st and/or 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12)

Introduces the four components of the construction cluster: carpentry. Emphasizes care and use of hand and power tools, equipment and materials, common principles and systems of frame construction, drafting, blueprint reading, applied mathematics, materials estimating and positive customer relation skills.

Diversified Coop Training (DCT I) Elective Meets State Endorsement for T&I 1st and/or 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 12)

Designed for students of legal employment age enrolled in the 11 th or 12th grade pursuing a career in trade, industrial, technical, or health career areas. Explores different styles of expression by introducing students to recognized artists and their work. Demonstrates use of color theory (hue, intensity, value, and color schemes) to create expressive qualities in paintings and to portray subjects in different lighting conditions. Prerequisite: Must have taken a Drawing class in Middle or High School in order to sign up for this class

The goal of this course is to provide students with an understanding of Microsoft Office including Microsoft Office including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access. Areas of instruction include computer applications and integration of word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software. The course will also provide an introduction to computer technology, decision-making, productivity, communications, and problem-solving skills. Students will be working with the operating system of Windows 7.

Business Communication and Presentation Elective Meets State Endorsement for Bus/ME (Technical and/or College Prep diploma) 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12) The goal of this course is to provide students with an understanding of communication skills and current and upcoming technology and its impact personally and professionally. Competency will be developed in the areas of oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, and the use of current technology. Within the curriculum the chieftain yearbook will be developed. 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 11-12)Students learn entry-level skills for working in an office environment. Students complete units in filing, electronic calculator, machine transcription, document processing, job application process, and office responsibilities. Students are placed in a school office setting for hands-on experience. Prerequisite: Computer Applications.

Career Essentials is a semester course. Students will receive 2 unit credit towards the current graduation requirements. In Career Essentials, students will be studying the following three instructional units: Preparing for Work, Working on the Job, and Career Planning. Within these units, students will learn about work, how to look for a job, how to apply for a job, how to interview for a job, work ethics, and career research. During this semester, students will be given various career assessments to help them determine what their interests and strengths are. Students will also be given the opportunity to job shadow in their chosen career areas.

Foundations of Engineering and Technology are the introductory course for all Georgia Engineering and Technology Education pathways. JROTC/Army I, II, III, IV Elective Meets State Career Pathway 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12)

The United States Army's Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, or JROTC, is a four year course designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline. Its focus is reflected in its mission statement, "To motivate young people to be better citizens." It prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, community, and nation. Three (3) years of JROTC meets the state requirement for Health and Physical Education. Mission Statement: To motivate young people to be better citizens.

An advanced food and nutrition course designed for students to learn the variation in nutritional needs at specific stages throughout the human life cycle. The course provides knowledge for real life and prepares students for employment in dietetics, consumer foods, and nutrition science.

Composition and structure of food will be examined. Students will evaluate the effects of processing, preparation, and storage on the quality, safety, and wholesomeness of foods. Careers in food science will be explored.

Intro to Early Childhood Care Education Elective Meets State Endorsement for Family & Consumer Ed. (Technical and/or College prep diploma) 1st and/or 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 11-12)

Introduction to Early Childhood Care and Education prepares students for employment in early childhood education and services. The course addresses early childhood issues that include guiding the physical, cognitive, creative, social, emotional, and moral development of children. An educational portfolio will be created as well. Students will learn to plan, guide, and implement developmentally appropriate lessons for children. Students will be involved in a laboratory setting where they teach and care for three and four year old children. This is a year-long course. Must be approved by the instructor.

Childcare Intern Elective Meets State Endorsement for Family & Consumer Ed. (Technical and/or College prep diploma) 1st and/or 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 11-12)

This course is designed for students who have already taken Intro to Early Childhood Education. The internship offers a candidate in the Early Childhood Education career pathway a field of experience. The internship stresses observing, analyzing, and classifying activities of the mentor and comparing personal traits with those of successful early childhood educators. The candidate intern will develop a portfolio of their skills, plan and teach a lesson or lessons, understand and practice confidentiality as it pertains to early childhood education, meet the needs of special education students, maintain the safety of the students, and practice professionalism and ethical behavior. This course is not required for pathway completion. Must be approved by the instructor.

Health, Safety, and Nutrition Elective Meets State Endorsement for Family & Consumer Ed. (Technical and/or College prep diploma) 1st and/or 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12)

Health, Safety and Nutrition introduces the practices and requirements for establishing and maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment. This course will allow students to develop skills for employment in early childhood-related occupations. Students will become certified in CPR/First Aid, identify types of abuse/neglect, identify nutritional needs of children, and identify symptoms and prevention of major childhood diseases.

Human Growth & Development Elective Meets State Endorsement for Family & Consumer Ed. (Technical and/or College prep diploma) 1st and/or 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 9-12)

Human Growth and Development for Early Childhood is a course that explores the growth and development of infants and children through the age of six. Topics that may be addressed include principles of physical, emotional, social, cognitive, and moral development; human needs during each stage of development; career decisions; impact of the family on child development; guidance techniques; children with special needs; parenting roles and responsibilities; designing and equipping a childcare facility; planning age-appropriate activities. Health Occ III PCA Elective Meets State Endorsement for T&I 1st and 2nd semester 2 unit per semester (Grade 12)

(Offers a technical certificate of Certified Nursing Assistant or Personal Care Assistant upon graduation of High School) This is a 2 year program offered through Heart of Georgia Technical College and is affiliated with the Youth Apprenticeship Program, Allied Health and Tech Prep Consortium. This program is offered to those students who have maintained an 80 or higher GPA. Curriculum includes AHS 109-Medical Terminology, AHS 103-Nutrition and Diet Therapy, CNA 100-Certified Nursing Assistant, Introduction to Healthcare, and Patient Care Skills, all which earn high school and technical college credit. These credits count toward any healthcare program offered at Heart of Georgia Technical College. Students will have the opportunity to job shadow at Dodge County Hospital and have clinical in the nursing home setting, and become certified in CPR and First Aid. This program gives the student opportunity to compare various jobs in the healthcare field and gives valuable healthcare related job experience.
