President’s Report…

Hi Everyone! Wow!! What a wonderful start to 2017! Our 18th Summer Rock Festival was a huge success thanks to Chris Ryan and a very dedicated team of 84 volunteers and other people that helped over that weekend. The committee also put in a huge effort over the whole week - THANK YOU, my friends. But the greatest thing that made this festival so good was "YOU" our members, friends and visitors, through some extremely hot evenings at every dance the atmosphere was electric. We are so privileged to have at our dances such dynamic bands as The Fender Benders, The Lincolns, Jump n Jive and a long list of other bands and entertainers. They come from far away, never complain, give their all no matter what the weather and that's the spirit that is making your club a growing success. Thank you all again for your support. A combined thank you BBQ has been agreed by the committee for all the volunteers who helped at our festival, demonstrations, sausage sizzles and hall set up. That's well over 100 people so keep February 19th free for a great day of food, fun, games and dancing! The location is Eastern Gardens Big Rotunda beside the Botanical Gardens entrance and the BBQ will go from 11am-4pm. Our next dance is on February 4th with a new band Cadillac Drifters - a very talented young band from Melbourne taking RnR dances and festivals by storm. Once you see them you will be amazed. February’s dance theme is Valentine’s, with a photo shoot corner for all the lovers. See you there! All you have to do is book your seats on the club phone, then pay at the door. Please have your membership cards at the ready to help speed things up. Monday night socials will commence on the 6th of February at 7.30 pm and our new lessons for 2017 will start on Thursday 9th February at 7pm. All those who put their name on a roster will have a roster emailed to them along with an invitation to the thank you BBQ. An ad for our lessons will be put in The Geelong Advertiser on the Saturday before lessons start, but word of mouth is by far the best advertising, so spread the word! Chris and Raelene Palmer are looking forward to starting a new year with GJBR and they have a great program ready for us. There are a few of our members doing it a bit tough with health issues at the moment and would like to pass on to them all lots of love and hugs from everyone at GJBR. So, best wishes for a speedy recovery to Barb Mitchell, Tom Hewitt and Carolyn McCloud XXX See you at the next dance. Love to you all, CASS. Keep on Rockin’

Let’s get things straight!

Hi my lovelies! Thank you all so much for the great feedback on the newsletter and especially this

column. I have great fun writing it so it makes me happy that some of you are finding the

information helpful! Recently I have been asked about getting your stocking seams straight. This is a

problem for me too so I turned to my trusty friend Youtube for help and found the following tips

that helped me a lot. Guys, you might want to put your fingers in your ears and go la, la, la….

Here goes ladies…

Stockings are easier to get straight than panty hose as you can do one leg at a time and not twist

the seam on the first leg trying to get your second leg in and, as panty hose weren’t invented

until the 60’s, stockings have the added benefit of being period correct.

You may have noticed that you can actually feel the stocking seam with your fingers. Gather the

stocking keeping the seam towards the back and when you pull it on feel the seam with your left

hand and guide it straight as your right hand pulls the stocking up. This takes a bit of practice but

once you get the hang of it you will be surprised how much difference it makes. If the seam isn’t

straight when you have finished it’s best to start over rather than trying to fix it.

“Fully Fashioned” stockings are less stretchy than modern stockings and are made in the shape

of your leg rather than a straight tube. These are much nicer to wear, stay straight better and

last for ages. I had a pair of fully fashioned stockings when I was younger and one pair literally

lasted me for years. Unfortunately, they are quite expensive.

Garter belts – if you are going to give stockings a go don’t buy a cheap garter or suspender belt.

Cheap ones don’t have good quality stocking clips on them and will quite often let go when you

sit down or bend over - aaargh! They also have the same sort of sliding adjustment as bra straps

which don’t hold well leaving you with saggy stockings. Go for an old fashioned vintage type

of belt with wide straps and large steel and rubber stocking clips. You will find them easier to

use and they will stay put all day. Also, the old fashioned type of garter belts have proper

snapping adjustment clips like trouser suspenders do, which don’t slip. Note to the wise - the

more straps your garter belt has, the straighter your seams will stay and you can get belts with

up to eight straps. I found the best place to find nice vintage style garter belts was on Ebay and if

I was to buy more I would probably tend to buy a size smaller than recommended as they are

quite stretchy - which leads me to my next tip…

Don’t wear a garter belt over shape wear! The smooth surface of the shapewear allows the

garter belt to slip down onto your hips making your stockings sag and stretching your lovely

garter belt!

Unmentionables – do they go over or under the garter belt? There is some debate on this and of

course it comes down to personal preference but, for practical reasons definitely over, OK? And

that’s all I’m going to say about that…

Stay ups. I’ve never had much luck with Stay Ups as they usually don’t - however they are more

likely to stay put if you don’t over stretch them by pulling them up too far. Also, dampening the

silicone band with a little cold water will often rejuvenate the stickiness. I still don’t trust them

though.

OK guys, you can take your fingers out of your ears now….

Here’s some stuff you may not have known about Valentine’s Day.

In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card.

Based on retail statistics, about 3 per cent of pet owners will give Valentine’s

Day gifts to their pets.

About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year. This makes it the

second largest seasonal card sending time of the year.

Many believe the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times.

People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an X.

The X was then kissed to show their sincerity.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who

would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves

for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear

your heart on your sleeve." This was because they hadn’t invented car keys yet…

Chris Ryan has indicated that he will unfortunately be unavailable to help organise

next year’s festival so if you would like to have a go at being part of the festival

committee and help to arrange this great event, please advise Cass as soon as

possible!
