Social Networking Sites allows us to extend

our online network of contacts, to connect

and interact with your friends, to share

things with each other, and most

importantly promote your website/blog and

help build your online reputation. It is

sometimes called "Online Reputation

Management".

History of Social Networking Sites?

1978 – Social networking was born through Bulletin Board System (BBS). It is the first system that allow users to sign in and interact with each other.Later 1978 – Usenet allows users to post news articles or posts. 1994 – Launched the first SNS on the internet called Geocities. It allows users to create their own websites.1995 – TheGlobe.com was launched which offers users the ability to interact with people who held the same interested and publish their own contents. 1997 – Instant messaging became popular where AOL IM and SixDegrees.com were launched. Also where users are able to create a profile and friend each other.

2002 – Friendster became the pioneer of social networking.2003 – MySpace was launched. 2004 – This is the year where the facebook was launched for US college students (Harvard College). After gaining popularity, FB opened it to non-college students as well. 2007 - Google + was launched by google.2008 - The year where FB surpassed MySpace as the leading SNS.2010 – Instagram and Pinterest was launched.

Pinterest is a social networking site that

people use to collect ideas for projects and

interests. Users create and share collections

(boards) of visual bookmarks (Pins) that they

use to do things like plan trips, develop

projects, organize events or save articles

and recipes.

Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing,

video-sharing and social networking service that

enables its users to take pictures and videos,

and share them on a variety of social networking

platforms. It has a distinctive feature that

confines photos to a square shape (4:3 aspect

ratio). Users can also apply digital filters to their

images and videos max duration is 15 seconds

LinkedIn is a business-oriented social

networking site. This allows users create

profiles and connections to each other in

an online social network which may

represent real-world professional

relationships. Users can invite anyone;

connection.

Google + is a social networking site and

identity service. It is described as a social

layer that enhances many of its online

properties. It also an authorship tool that

associates web-content directly with its

owner/author.

accounts and 359 million active monthly

users

Twitter is an online social networking service that

enables users to send and read short 140-

character messages called "tweets". You can read

and post tweets if you are a registered users.

Unregistered users on the other hand can only read

them.

Twitter now has over 550 million registered users

and 215 million monthly active users

Facebook is a social networking site,

where users may create a personal profile,

add other users as friends, exchange

messages, post status updates and photos,

and receive notifications when others

update their profiles.

Facebook now has over 1.15 billion users.
